How does one scheme to get them to throw the ball at Moore and not the other 4 guys on every play?
Please enlighten me how you fix Hobbs ability to play man coverage. Because we both know you’re not gonna suggest zone. You have to double/shade a guy every single play?
I asked this last night and nobody can give an answer. How do you reconcile the compete dismissal of playing zone when Zackey and Hobbs can’t play man on their own (against who they’ve been tasked with)?
A&Ms best players play in the slot. Miami’s entire offense is predicated on the slot. We were just gonna scheme them out of those things? If you’re gonna drop the “did you play football” line I expect a world class answer here on how you would have taken Dawson/Klein out of their planned attacks.
Oh keep in mind your DEs aren’t getting ANY pass rush without blitzing and your safety play is suspect at best. Go on. Let’s hear it Lax.
Do you not realize that there are dozens of teams each year with players much worse than Hobbs who go on to play much better defense? We have literally seen service academies with top 25 defenses.
It's not about going play-by-play and saying "well we should've done exactly XYZ here to protect Hobbs" ... I could easily go back to 4th and 11 or the explosive play to Craver with 2 minutes left and say "if we were in this call instead of the one we were in then this wouldn't have been open." Do you know how easy those hypotheticals are? That kind of hindsight is totally worthless... that's not how stuff is done in the real world. There is no coach that thinks that way. Every game the OC is going to catch the DC in something and vice versa, that's literally why they get paid the money.
The position that Hobbs is so unbelievably trash that his VOR replacing a UDFA nickel == total collapse of the defense from 2024 to 2025 and there is nothing that can be done about it is so outlandish that it doesn't warrant any discussion. You could be playing Joe Schmidt as your nickel instead of Clark and it wouldn't account for what we are seeing. The issues go so far beyond Hobbs' crappy play.
1A. We are not generating many negative plays
1B. Despite giving up tons of explosive plays
This would tell you that you either need to go the Diaco route (and he led a championship caliber defense with a true freshman converted RB as one of his starting corners) where you emphasize giving up zero explosive plays and stopping the run with fundamentally sound zone defense and great tackling. But the early returns on Ash is that he clearly hasn't coached the guys well to play zone, it looks awful. So that's unlikely to have better results, and also doesn't lend itself well to the weakness at DT.
Or you need to start playing almost exclusively Cover 1 and Cover 0, blitz like crazy, try to create a bunch of negative plays. This is likely to give up a good amount of explosive plays and points every game... but you're already doing that. In ~70 plays last night there were probably ~15-20 that went for 10+ yards and a half dozen of those went for 20+ yards. That's crazy. To the naked eye, we blitzed more and played more man in the second half and were overall much more effective until the last drive.
