(Hate my decision-making ability for posting in this thread, but ...)
A. No one's considered "End Game" is WWIII, and as no one of any importance (even Trump) is insane to the Everyone Loses "end game", WWIII will not be the preferred choice here at any stage.
B. Trump only wants to have his adulation in public (I can't believe that people still think that there is anything, ever, on his agenda that violates his ego-absorbed interaction with the world) . Probably Zelenskyy had to be bluntly shown that to believe it. Now he does.
C. No such "diplomacy" should ever be flaunted about before live Television. But Trump wants his adulation. Even he said this was going to be good television. (mind-bogglingly incredibly.)
D. Ukraine is the draw-the-line-in-the-sand place to halt Putin Land Grabbing. This is completely obvious to everyone (note the reactions of the Baltic States and essentially everyone in Eastern Europe, thus spilling across all of Europe. (Plus every military guy you're getting on TV now --- no matter what party they connect to, they all agree that Ukraine's is the current line in the sand.) Ukraine is fighting for its OWN life for sure, but no one should with a straight face say that they aren't giving anything to the general Western Democracy hopes for the future.
E. Trump wants a Win. That's the metals deal. Zelenskyy is quite happy with that idea. He just wants that to be packaged with a bit more assurance that Ukraine won't be divided and its existence as an entity lost. Trump however wanted a fast splashy TV win. This is an example as to why diplomacy should be done Big Picture and involving several consultations and behind doors.
F. The metals deal is a winner for everybody in the long run --- or should be. The greater the involvement of the Western Economic powerhouse on the ground in Ukraine makes it FAR less likely that Putin even considers going in there and interrupting the flow of Big Money interests (let alone military materials interest in the US.)
G. Trump lectures Zelenskyy as having "no cards." Well, sort of true vs Russia military numbers, but how does one blame him for wanting the cards that he does have (the resources, which are more than merely the ores, and the battle-willing Putin-stopper life-spilling soldiers) included in the bigger picture treaty with the US?
H. Europe might just step its role up and also make a deal for the minerals, plus the FOOD that Ukraine has always sent them in abundance. That would be almost as good a global economy "solution" to Putin Aggression, but Europe, in the end still needs the Leviathan to back it up. Hopefully they'll say "Thank You" enough on television to Trump to get it.
I. The only way we go into WWIII is if Trump gets so petulant about not being publicly adulated enough that he pulls our military force away from Europe, thus allowing Putin meddling in far more areas. That is an insanity that, I hope (and pray), even he isn't capable of.
