I think what everyone can agree on is that you pay these contracts for what the athlete is going to do, not what he's already done. This guy is 26 and has been with the club since age 6. He's won everything already and is likely entering his prime. He's also a hometown guy, which only adds to the PR portion of this. Academy kids get the "he's one of our own" chant. That matters.
