People used to complain about ND in that very same way. The whole irrelevant argument was always weak IMO.
A more articulate point might be "the team is not relevant to the championship hunt, yet remains prominent in media coverage and watercooler discussions."

Manchester United is a sham of a club since Ferguson left. Since 2012/13 (Fergusons last year) they are averaging a 5th/6th place finish, while spending the 2nd most (behind Chelsea obviously). They are out of the Champions League more often than not. And they dominate soccer conversations despite being mediocre.

Some may think this is a bit ironic discussing on an ND football board but the type of dysfunction to take that amount of money and turn it into basically nothing, is next level.

When you look at their history prior to him, and I'm saying going back all the way to the start, and then you look at what they've done since....there isn't a huge amount of difference. Busby, Ferguson and not much else.

Maybe this is just what Manchester United really is?

That's fair. I listen to a lot of soccer/football talk podcasts/sirius 157 and I just get tired of hearing about how they lost another match. Meanwhile, there are plenty of thriving clubs outperforming expectations or getting a lot more with a lot less, that barely get mentioned.

I never really realized it until now, TBH, but it's true when you look at the club history.

They're still one of the most popular clubs in the world because of their success in the 1990s, but I get what you're saying for sure. I think when you look at what Aston Villa is doing right now it's largely unnoticed. Hell, Don Carlo got Manager of the Year yesterday instead of Xabi Alonso. Big clubs are going to big club.

Manchester United still get the clicks, they get the attention. If this trajectory continues, though, maybe we don't hear as much about them as time goes on.

Felt like a very significant weekend in the English Premier League. 10 matches into the burn.

Also feels like away games are difficult in England. Not a single away team won this past weekend.

Big for Spurs as we host Ipswich (we also just lost to Palace) while teams above us have tricky matches.

Pulisic with a good shift. Milan leads Real 3-1.

Liverpool not rolling out the welcome wagon for Xabi Alonso. 3-0 Liverpool over Leverkusen.

It's Election Day, so perhaps Russian bots have gotten into my phone, but Sporting Lisbon leads City 4-1.

All that hubbub over the Ballon d’Or and now both clubs are suddenly scuffling.

EDIT: I completely blanked on the fact Rodri is out for the season.

Real Madrid are incredibly entitled, from their front office on down to their supporters. I guess when you have that much success that's what happens.

F*ck 'em.

It's just plain idiotic. I'm sure all those guys say these things to one another in private, but to say it on camera when you know you are being filmed...nah, bro.

He's gonna be made an example of, but you have to be smarter than that.

He and his agent don't need to say much. Every goal celebration, and there have been many so far, is free PR when he celebrates with his supporters home or away. They're playing well at the moment and it's only going to put pressure on the club hierarchy to make their stance known. Are they making him an offer or are they letting him walk.

Fascinating stuff here. The guy is in as good of form as anyone right now.

They're certainly going to lose Alexander-Arnold as well. Van Dijk doesn't have many great years left, I don't think. If they don't have the $ to even compete for Salah then it's straight into rebuilding mode for them.

Based on what I've been reading, I disagree with all three of the sentences in this post. LOL.

These guys can start negotiating with other clubs in January. Let's see what happens.

PSV comeback against Shaktar was insane. Tillman with 2 and Pepi with 1 in last 5 minutes. Crazy.

Tillman Tessman and McKennie in MF going forward IMO. Gio and Adams just can’t stay healthy which is sad but true.
