Miami has a Republican governor and mayor. Miami has much of the same issues other cities do.
The case with the majority of these places is that the worst parts are relegated to a couple of different areas, all of which tourists are going to avoid anyway. Typically you're going to hit Navy Pier, The Bean and Buckingham Fountain in Chicago, not Englewood and West Garfield Park. It's also important to note how these areas are policed versus how safer areas are patrolled in comparison, which is rather uncomfortable and contentious when it comes to having that conversation.
Wreck It Rahm closed half of the mental health clinics in Chicago to save tax payers a few million dollars. Anyone want to guess what happened next? Crime went up. Add in all of the schools he closed on top of that and it was a mess on top of another mess. Neoliberal bullshit that targeted communities that were already fucked to begin with. To be fair to Mayor 1%, all 50 city council members voted for these cuts. D and R alike.
They're currently in the process of reopening 3 of these mental health clinics in some of the worst neighborhoods. Hopefully it does some good.
Chicago was also just tying to pass some curfew law for downtown for minors. On the surface would seem logical for downtown but not sure how that would be policed.
Mental Health. If the “proper” amount was ever spent on mental health facilities every state would be broke. There isn’t any amount of money that can combat the mental health crisis in the US. Democrats are ape shit about more mental health facilities more than you think republicans are about more prisons. You guys cry about crime prevention and begging government to intervene to “prevent” crime with free programs and free lunch but your answer for mental health is just more beds and facilities meaning more government.
Society has gone to shit because government has enabled them to do so. Anyone want to talk about why mental health issues are breaking records every year? It’s not because we aren’t giving out free lunch.
