She was apparently given specific questions to be asked. You do remember that Donna Brazile gave Hilary's campaign the questions to be asked at a debate, right? Not like this is anything new.

Call me crazy but the country shouldn't be honoring Lee or any other Confederate that fought against the Union. We should have never erected statues or named military bases after a bunch of rebel losers. Only in America tho with our participation trophies do losers get that kind of recognition.

Lincoln wanted the war to end. Desperately. On very generous terms.

Lee could have held out in the mountains for FIFTY more years had he wanted to. He stated it. The union knew it.

So you can see how they would allow them to turn in their weapons, go back home and let them have their folk heroes.

The radical Republicans wanted to punish the south mercilessly. While I get that sentiment, I think Lincoln had it right.

There are a lot of people who are Robert E. Lee fans. He is studied around the world for his defensive military genius. He was even revered in the north.

You realize that before the US Civil War, there was more loyalty to your state than the country, right? Virginia was by far the most prestgious state in the union ever since George Washington. It was then referred to as 'these United States' and was merely held together by a non binding union.

Im sure their are fine people who want to preserve history and not tear down statues. Just like I'm sure their are fine people who feel that it's time for them to be removed. I'm also sure that their are not so fine people on those two sides of the aisle.

I'm not a big Robert E. Lee fan myself. When Stonewall Jackson was killed by friendly fire, it removed his right arm.

I'm a big U.S. Grant fan and almost named my son Grant, like I named my daughter Reagan. His siege of the unbreakable fortress that was Vicksburg is still studied. Sherman is my second favorite General.

Yeah, I have a lot of problems with him. I get this was a time when people were more loyal to their state than the union. And I get not wanting to fight against Virginia, which was just sacrilegious. This was the birth of everything, including George Washington. I'm not defending his decision. I'm stating that the country was just different then.

He turned down leading the Union Army of the Potomac. He should have turned down the Army of North Virginia as well. The war was over after after the devastating weekend of Gettyburg and Vicksburg but he was too stubborn.

His soldiers were reduced to eating kernels of corn from animal dung. He ordered stragglers who couldn't keep up to be shot. Just an awful situation.

I sometimes wonder if the Civil War wasn't our punishment as a nation for the horrors of human bondage.

Lee's "Military Genius" was often overstated by Lost Cause apologists of the South. He was tactically brilliant for sure, but strategically he was a mess, and as Commander in Chief of the Confederate Army he sucked. Tactical Brilliance is not what you need from your CIC. The Maryland and Gettysburg plans were strategic abominations in a war in which you only needed to fight to a defensive victory, and Lee's aggression in the Eastern Theater enabled the success of the Anaconda Strategy for the Union.
