This is from February 2019 - scary accurate, including the implied skepticism
TBH, somewhere in the middle I thought they had it right. Buch seemed like a crazy talented kid who really loved Notre Dame.

Still to this day, I do not understand how he went from what we saw in his throwing sessions before Kelly to what he showed up to the Elite 11 with. It just blows my mind that he literally blew his entire football career working with a guy for a couple/few months. And could never work it back out. So weird.

I'm a golf addict.
When I'm under pressure I fall back to my natural swing despite my hours of practice trying to change it.

TB sucks and quit on us.
McCarthy probably has us undefeated right now.

UM is overrated. Only decent team they played all year was today. I think ND dominated OSU more than UM did.

You might be right. I vent. It's what I do on days like this or after lsses.

It rubs some the wrong way and get that.

This is pathetic.

We lost, like we've always done since 1994.

McCarthy most likely has us at 10-1 or 11-0 right now.

I think he was always that guy we saw at the elite 11.

Who are you arguing with here? We didn't pass on him. The coaches who did have left.

We'll see how they do in the playoff. Last year they lost to perhaps the weakest team to make the CFP.

Was it the covid year thing that made JJ transfer to IMG so he could keep playing football and get better? He really recruited hard for Michigan as well. He would have brought those two things that Buchner didn’t.

Come on. He doesn’t hate ND he hates ND losing whereas you and I are cool with it.
I'm surprised he's gracing everyone with this level of insight and analysis. Wait until he finds out that Google exists and he can check out if his own fork-in-the-outlet level takes are true or not.

We may have misevaluated this situation

*whispers* Thank you Timmy Royce
My hot take is that McCarthy isn't that good and will almost certainly bust in the NFL.... but Rees going for Buchner over McCarthy was/is still insane in retrospect. Like regardless of your opinion of McCarthy, he'd clearly have been a 3 year starter at ND and probably very productive.

Rees might be the worst talent evaluator that I can remember in recent history.

Buchner>McCarthy

Did he recruit half a star Phil, too?

Bad evaluation by Rees and Kelly to be sure, but McCarthy is a very mid quarterback as a pro prospect. He's not outstanding in any area, and to me has career backup written all over him. Good college QB, but has a relatively low ceiling as a prospect.

Buchner has better arm talent, and is a better runner when healthy. I can see why Tommy wanted him.

I have to strongly disagree. If he had better arm talent than JJ, then he would be starting for Alabama. Because the QB they have is terrible.

I agree, but if it's true that McCarthy would've been Irish if Rees offered him, we would've been at least 10-2 last year and gone 10-2 or 11-1 in the Regular Season this year.

On one hand I want him to stay and eat shit for his final year. Play a real schedule, have roster turnover, and deal with real sanctions (highly unlikely the sanctions are significant IMO).

On other hand, he'd be media darling for another year and I just want him gone. Don't want to see his ork face again, or cheesy "look at me" outside the game tactics.

Probably my biggest worry about Carr is that Tommy had a choice between Carr and Sayin and went with Carr. Historical trends bode well for Bama here.

Luckily, Gino seems to be a pretty good QB developer.

Looking back, I’m not really sure what Rees did well. His misevaluated on a yearly basis, his QBs almost never progressed, and his offenses in general were just okay.

I'm not even sure if sanctions will actually hit until the year after next. That's the sad thing.

He played football for ND. In all seriousness, as much as I didn't like Rees as OC, I blame Kelly. He just lazily promoted from within as opposed to having a thorough nation-wide search.

We’re clearly missing something. He’s well respected in the coaching ranks and Saban wanted him.
