ND ended up with the 61st SOS in 2023. Probably our easiest schedule in a long time. We finished 9-3 due to our offense. This is why heads should roll on the offensive side of the ball.

I expected the schedule to be much more difficult, and even I thought clemson/USC weren't going to be good as expected, and ohio state with a first time starting QB. Clemson/USC were even worse than i thought, OSU about as expected, nc state as expected, Louisville better, duke about as expected, pitt and wake worse.

Really disappointing to go 9-3 with that schedule. Pre season rankings it was top 10 or 5 most difficult.
It was all Al Golden. With a comparable DC, we are 7-5 this year. People need to realize these things before it actually is a 7-5.

Kinda surprised that Duke hasn't reached out to Golden. I'd take him over Knowles. He has a track record and has succeeded as a HC at a program where things are stacked against him.
Who says they haven't and him or his agent said no thanks.

Today is Freeman's extinction event. He may survive through next season, but in a few years when he's starting a ton of freshmen and sophomores on offense and we tank without Golden's D backing us up...we'll look back on this mass exodus and know why.

It's funny that the players all petitioned for him to get the job and now they're bailing on him.

In a vacuum this post would seem like hyperbole, but I think you just may be onto something.

This is a very good post that shouldn't get lost in the shuffle.

the Transfer portal though is a life raft for shitshows like what is going on now. Like you can transfer your way out of big messes whereas before it took 3/4 years to get out of a hole

You should read Jamie U's 6 Thoughts article on ISD today. This isn't a new thing, we've been young on offense for the last few years

Unfortunately I have to agree. The wheels are starting to wobble and soon fall off.

What's funny is i'm probably more negative regarding freeman and what i believe are his clear shortcomings than most, but i'm not quite down on all of this as much as most (other than parker still on the staff).

We haven't lost anyone that was going to be critical to our success in 2024, 2023 bowl yes though.

Need
Leonard
2 starting WRs from portal and not lose any more WRs (assume Rico is gone and that's fine by me)
Not losing any incoming frosh WRs and Cam needs to be legit from day 1
2 Dl
1 safety/nickel (pace cincy)
maybe OT if Fisher leaves (i'm fine starting one inexperience tackle next year not two)

Don't hate him, just think he's a slot WR and faison and greathouse are better.

If Rico leaving forces ND to be even more aggressive with WR in the portal, imo it's the right move and we'll be better next year for it

Many posters derided these very players for their poor play, low-level athleticism, etc. I'm shocked more people aren't celebrating for the staff clearing room for some big time playmakers.
Rico seems replacement level. Braylon never saw the field. Merriweather underperformed the last two years. Styles had been meh.

Maybe MF moved on from Chansi because A) it wasn’t his hire and B) the WR room actually isn’t that good.

I hope for MF’s sake that he’s right.

Wow.....this feels shit show'ish. But check out what's happening in Colorado on Primetime's watch. That looks complete and crazy shit show.

I just think until there are some guard rails around NIL and the portal (and I think there will be in a couple years) this is how college football is going to look. There were 200 QB's in the portal last year.....200.

That feels like a lot of needs… and that’s kind of the point of the hysteria.

This started as…

Tyree bounces
(Ok, well we still have a lot of young talent)
We fire Stuckey.
(Belief that the players didn’t like Stuckey, we will retain a bunch more)
Merriweather enters portal
(Okay, well this one makes sense. We’re still good)
Braylon, probably Rico.
(Okay, well now we just need X, Y, and Z…)

I’m not so sure this is where this ends. Hell, we’re now putting a lot of eggs in the Riley Leonard and Cam basket. It’s nice that they say they’re on board, but until they actually sign (Riley may be a done deal, more speaking to Cam here) it’s fair to expect that they might be thinking about their options.

God forbid Al Golden bounces like some thought he might. Then we have big question marks on both sides of the ball next year.

I knew you know why, but not everyone clearly does. Many just saw me not hyping up a true frosh getting major PT,actually being a little down on his overall abilities, and stopped reading all my details of why

I think folks are greatly overestimating how easy it's going to be to have this much roster turn over but continuity on the field.

And, again, it's not the continuity and chemistry to win 10 games. It's the continuity and chemistry to run the schedule. Which, should be in play.
Yeah, you need the portal wrs, and other wrs with leonard all spring, summer, and into fall

MF just going to have to learn that the whole impression of D and O and DC and OC and the coaches involved is more important than ever and can be the magnet or the skunk for the team. Great coaches and culture, ND attracts great players and personalities (hopefully)... Stinking up the room, players will bolt esp. in the TP/NIL era. And the key DC & OC hires are so important for the key TP pickups (QB) and key position coaches (what WR coach if he has options would really want to attach himself to JP as OC?). And lastly, unless ND Admin/process changes, ND also can't afford heavy leakage because it ain't so easy with current processes to get a lot of transfers in to backfill (portal peeps move FAST and we have too much friction unless you're a GT and it's a very competitive market for GTs). He has to anticipate these things. That same unique ND flavor can quickly become soured premium yogurt
