Pitt, wake and Stanford absolutely have to be games where guys like Ausberry, Gray, Sneed, Bowen, Hinish, Ford, Traore, Burnham, Rubio, Vernon, Onye, Junior, Mickey and maybe even Shuler, Barnes and Bell get a decent amount of snaps.

This secondary is the best I've ever seen at ND, or maybe elsewhere for that matter. Id be fine with Mickens as DC on that fact alone. Also, this should be in a different thread, but lets not forget that Xavier Watts was a 3 star recruit, at receiver, not even as a db.

I don't know if that directly translates to being a great DC but he would have Marcus as a sounding board and his other coordinators to pull from. I think Golden has been special but Mickens has proven too much to not get something from ND.

I've never seen a secondary do this to teams, week in and week out.

As long as we don't go to a 3 down base with freeman as "sounding board". We did a bit of it still last year with no success, and absolutely none of it this year except for 3rd and super longs (with minimal to no success).

It's absolutely right up there. The other one that comes to mind for me is 1980 with Stacey Toran (multiple AA) Dave Dureson and John Krimm.

Oh no doubt about that. I was thinking more just winning comfortably enough that you can sprinkle some of these guys in for a few snaps here and there without risk of it actually costing the team a win if that makes sense. Just thinking if we're up 31-13 in the late 3rd qtr against Stanford is there that much risk to let Gray or someone take a snap or two.

I think the problem is we legit have a championship level defense this year that has shut down every potent offense we've faced. Our offense is filled with legit studs with proven talent (Although the WR room has been banged up), the best QB we've had in a dog's age, and our OC just can't cut it. With so many teams down this year or underperforming we had a legit chance at getting to the playoff and possibly winning a championship, but our offense is somehow worse than it was last year. We've regressed and blown a big opportunity.

I mean, it is the HCs side of the ball. Just get him more involved in the defense if that's the move we make

I have mentioned it a couple times about Freeman, but my opinion is when you have a bonafide superstar that you know if you let them go they will be killing it somewhere else in 5 years and you wont get them back, you keep them and stomach some growing pains. Especially when you have competent coaches on staff that can guide them and ease the transition.
The Parker situation is not that.

Mickens is a great corners coach. I’d hate to lose him at that position. Sometimes you have to lose good coaches. If the benefit outweighs the cost, you may need to promote him. If not, you don’t. Nobody can gauge that better than freeman.

Haha ok but in fairness... that's one of the "pros" of having a defensive minded HC. Your HC is typically supposed to be able to mentor on one side of the ball.

Reese and Alexander where bad recruiters. Good riddens. There laziness has cost Gerry Parkman dearly since the thin WR room has picked up injuries but Parkman isn't a good play caller and needs to have a chip on his shoulder. He's got converted RB and walk on lacrosse players for Sam Hartman, and were Tight End U so we can just keep throwing to them and no defensive coordinator is gonna be able to stop it.

Just too many loosers that don't have a chip on their shoulder. We gotta run the ball and give Golden whatever he wants to stay, and pay Mickens and give him some stupid job title so he stays.

You also dont want to fall into the peter principle. I'd hate to promote Mickens to DC in order to maintain having a great CB coach all while the total defense falls to shit. If theres a world where we keep him and hire a proven DC thats the move, imo.

I don't want to minimize that, yes our previous DC now HC can provide some help, but he's the HC and is over all aspects of the game not just defense. I dont think we want someone who is already learning on the job and has made some boneheaded decisions to be over occupied by helping another on the job learner that he cant be the all encompassing HC he needs to be.

Just seems weird to me that we are wanting to put additional responsibilities on him when he already has shown he's needing his own assistance.

I think the problem is that we assumed we had legit studs and proven talent. But where is it?

Alt - 1st round talent for sure
Estime - Top flight back
Hartman - sure, experienced high level QB. But this is his first year in a brand new system.
Fisher - He has the upside, but has yet to show the consistency to be considered a legit stud.

That's it. Thomas had potential to be a solid starting receiver, but he got hurt. We had to rely on freshman to fill the gaps at receiver, and even more so with the injuries to Thomas, Greathouse and Colzie. Tyree has made plays, but this is still his first year at receiver.

Then there's the interior of the OL. Correll is just too small, Spindler and Coogan have been inconsistent and inexperienced.

There's a lot of issues personnel wise with this offense that go outside of the play calling of Parker.

Parker is likely not going anywhere & will continue to learn on the job. That would make it difficult for MF to make a case for replacing Golden (assuming he leaves for the NFL) w/ another 1st time coordinator. Plus, it would be a gamble that MF is doubling down on. Considering it’s his livelihood at stake, I think MF is smarter than that.

Hart gave up a 40 yard completion against nc state while in perfect coverage and guy made a great catch…. Morrison has been really good, but harts been more consistent this year
