And we weren’t gonna wait around for a month. For better or worse, that was kind of a deal-breaker for both sides.
Indeed. I think Jack had to go with MF in that situation. If they had of waited for Fickell and that recruiting class fell apart and then the Portal being wide open too then they'd be still in a major rebuild at this time

Thats Savvy Jack for you. Concern about the current class, concern his buddy Tommy Rees might leave and this DC that he could sign cheaply and manage over with such lack of experience..... what an opportunity to screw this up. Jack wasn't going to pass it up!

This is the dumbass short-sided mentality that got us in this fine position we are in.

Notre Dame has to take itself more seriously than concern about a class lost or losing Tommy or Marcus to conduct a serious National Search with National Title Contending Pay$$$

Its all about $$$..... and ND doesn't want to bring it to get the best and brightest.

Yes. ND invests like a Top 15 program, not Top 5. Kelly left for LSU due to this pay gap. ND wouldn't pay Ludwig's buyout. ND rarely pays material buyouts. There is no way ND pays MF - a new HC - market rates (which in this case may be a good thing). ND has historically been behind in reinvesting into facilities like Top 10 programs.

ND paid market rates for Freeman as DC because Kelly demanded it out of Swarbrick. Kelly had the gravitas to do that. Freeman now as HC still doesn't.

Kelly had the gravitas to demand DC pay at market but not his own?

Just found out Marcus lives about 2 houses over from me. About to stop by next week with a casserole.
Let me know if you need me and my brother to fly in and give him a pep talk.

We chatted up Irish Chocolate (RIP) at the bar after Purdue 2012 and we were like “Muthafucka what are you guys doing? You all better beat stupid ass Michigan and USC!”.

Just sayin.

Good perspective that I was reminded of today. I remember telling buddies of mine after MF was named HC that the team may be just as good or slightly better under Freeman w/ a worse record b/c of the schedules he is facing in year one & two. BK did a great job of beating the teams he was supposed to post-2016 but that doesn’t mean ND still didn’t shit the bed during that revival. 2017 Miami, 2017 Stanford, uncompetitive in CFP loss to Clemson, 2019 Meatchicken, uncompetitive 2020 ACC Championship Game, 2021 Cincinnati.

Considering ND’s schedules weren’t as tough as what MF has had to navigate as a 1st year HC, I can give MF & Co some grace while acknowledging the WTH moments we all witnessed the past three games. ND lost to an inferior opponent in UL which is something we haven‘t been used to seeing from 2017-2021 & I thank BK to at least getting ND to that point but he all but said that is as far as he can take them. My hope is that MF is saying all the right things in private meetings that he’s isn’t saying in the pressers. He has to be or he’s a fraud b/c he speaks very passionately about his high standards so I trust he’s doing this.

I know its a loooonnnnggggg shot, but what do you guys think Kliff Kingsbury will do after this season? Do you think he would be an OC again at the college level? I think he would be OC if he was the top / one of the top coordinators paid in college football.

Obviously money talks, but we all know Notre Dame is like the cheapskate Uncle from the movie Home Alone...
If he oc at college it would likely be Bama.

There is absolutely ZERO chance that this will happen.

Not only would the optics be horrendous (and face it, ND cares about stuff like that), but it would be silly. ND would lack any ability to attract any top-tier coaching candidates if Freeman ever loses his job after three 9-win seasons.

Go ask Nebraska how it worked out after they canned Bo Pelini for not being "good enough."
Pelini was hired coming off the tumultuous tenure of Bill Callahan, where Nebraska went 27-22 in his 4 years.

Freeman was hired coming off Brian Kelly, who went 54-9 in his final 5 seasons at ND.

Pelini got Nebraska to another level that they weren't at prior to his hiring. He simply wasn't capable of getting them to that next level competitively.

If ND loses 4 games in back-to-back-to-back seasons, that shows a regression from what was there before.

That's why I say you can't just look at records for this kind of evaluation. ND was in a much better place competitively when Freeman took over than Nebraska was when Pelini took over. The expectations shouldn't be remotely the same.
