Freeman wanting to put it on Schraeder for the win was surprising
He admitted in his press conference that he wants the kid to have more confidence making those big time kicks.

I'm personally glad it didn't come down to it.

Somebody please answer this simple question: Are the odds of missing a field goal from the one greater than the odds of Duke going 75 yards for a touchdown in 30 seconds?

This is the kind of stuff Freeman needs to tighten up on as the head manager of late game situations. Needs to look at the research and go with his gut. It’s a balance.

Go outside nerd. Get out. Go. MF ain't got time to be distracted by these worthless chime ins. Go on.

*not you dublin, the analytics nerds*
MF is standing there and thinking what would Jim Tressel do and then he has an epiphany and chooses low percentage field goal

I think his decision was influenced by the thin WR room and lack of execution by the WRs up to that point in the game. Usually you’d expect some quick outs to the boundaries in that situation but a poor route or miscommunication between QB and WR would have been the death knell (INT). I agree that a couple of passes to move closer would normally be the move there but in the circumstances, it was maybe just as risky as the 45+ yard FG. Fortunately Estime bailed us all out and we didn’t have to sweat out the FG attempt…….

That might be, but he is forgetting the half of that equation which made it successful: having a kicker that can't miss.

Freeman’s move to run it with 39 seconds to set up a fg was just like Ryan day vs Georgia. We got so lucky. In college you want a td or the fg to be as close as possible.

Lucky? There was no luck involved in our boys busting that hole open

I get the math, but let’s remember the context. We were in nearly in FG range until a foolish penalty from a 2nd string WR almost cost the drive.

The options were not TD or FG. They were call a play with a near certain chance of preserving the FG or call a play with a small chance of getting taken completely out of range or losing the game.

With respect to the idea that Estime should have gone down, I agree that is only a good idea in the NFL where kickers are near automatic and if opposing QBs can actually move the ball quickly in the air.

Any chance Freeman wanted to boost the kicker’s confidence by having him kick the (easy) game-winning FG? I found his post-game comment odd. And that’s the only rationale that made sense to me. But what do I know?

Yeah, same situation day had and the long fg didn’t work. Go for more yards or protect fg

This here. We're on the 29 (46 yard field goal), with 38 seconds left and one timeout. You've had a hard time throwing and a lot of pressure all night, and don't want to risk a sack or a pick. Giving to Estime a couple of times might get you five to 10 yards closer. Or if he sees a hole, the whole ballgame.
No way you go down on the 1 though, that's playing with fire for sure.
