I tend to focus on needs and issues as just the way my profession has me programmed, but I’ll do my best to be more balanced in a review:

The defense overall did a solid job. I was happy with the degree of pressure on the quarterback even if it only produced 2 sacks (several plays seem aided by zebras that seemed hesitant to throw holding flags). Couple of examples of missed tackles, struggled to adjust when Duke started leaning on their Quarterback’s legs, and a few plays the team still feels poorly prepared on goal line situations. I felt the defense was overall a B+.

Special teams. The near turnover on the punt, lost opportunity to run back a punt or two, and inconsistency out of the field goal kicker make me feel this area of the program needs a bit more attention. I have always been a fan of our former running back turned flanker, but his special teams awareness was lacking last night. Very much a C grade performance.

The offense was hampered by the lack of playmakers at receiver. Any game you have to rely on the freshman and second string to get separation, get open on busted plays, or block down field is going to be a noticeable problem. I think they did what they could with whom they had available and will leave that there. What can you say about the TE’s, anyone that questions our position as TE U is not watching the same program I have over the last 15 years.
I also want to say I’m overall impressed with Hartman. His ability to show comfort in the pocket and fight to win is maybe his best qualities. I wish he was more of a dual threat, but let’s not kid ourselves, he is amazingly talented at throwing into traffic and yet avoid interceptions.
Lastly, the line, for the most part, played well against a group I thought was well taught and hungry to prove Clemson wasn’t a fluke. A B or B- performance for a team getting no adjustments for lost starters.

Overall the team MUST clean up its act, the penalties (offsides and false starts) are at a degree well beyond a team of this experience and talent. Those are mental mistakes (a source of some of our goal line issues as well if you ask me). Some fundamental process issues need to be administered across the aids, coaches, and players to clean it up as it seems systemic.

I think the OSU game took a lot of this team. That was an incredibly physical and when you consider how it ended emotionally draining game.

For positives, winning the game when it looked like it was over will ease the pain of fumbling the OSU game and will instill a toughness that no amount of rah rah can instill. Hartman played a poor game and was forcing it. He recklessly put his head down on a number of runs. Was he trying to compensate for the OSU game? Possibly. But it was his toughness and leadership at the most critical moment of the game that won the game. Mitchell Evans is better than Mayer. Better blocker and more fluid in the passing game. Our D played a helluva game.

For the negatives, Parker learned the wrong lessons from the OSU game. We played well offensively against OSU. Our issue was situational play calling and personnel: 4th downs, end game short yardage, continuity. I have enjoyed watching rotation of RBs and playing to the strengths of each RB. It also made us less predictable. Yesterday, we seemed determined to run a power game with Estime. I suspect that is due to Parker/coaching staff thinking that we lost against OSU because Estime didn't get enough touches? But the criticism wasn't the number of touches but when (4th downs and end of game). Yesterday we were predictable and frankly grab baggish.

For the inexcusable, Merriweather lacks the intensity to compete at this level. Either he will learn or it isn't in his heart, but his half assed attempt at the ball at that point of the game is inexcusable. Also, our mercenary kicker needs to keep his smirking to a minimum considering his sub par performance.

Great win given OSU and a sigh of relief.

Only real thought i have is I'm very very low on Parker as OC. Two terrible weeks back to back and it isn't going to get easier. Need to find his replacement in the off season

Is it? There were a lot out yesterday. Tobias…yeah, he is a liability, but Greathouse, Colzie, Tyree…that’s good enough talent right there.
Yeah man we have one of the worst WR groups in the country with Thomas/Greathouse out. We're running a true freshman out there, a converted RB who is still developing as a WR, and then Tobias Merriweather who is who he is right now. In the game last night we didn't have a single player active at WR that would even crack the Top 10 for what Kelly was working with for the past decade.

Bingo. It’s literally the sole purpose of the game day threads on any site across any program. It’s a space to vent and celebrate. An outlet of both positive and negative emotion.

There are plenty of threads where people can sniff jocks and clap because the program merely exists.

Maybe just avoid game day threads if you are offended by raw emotion and wildly funny overreactions. People have the same right to fly off the handle as bury their face in a pile of jocks and describe the smell from a schematic standpoint.

It's really no different than being drunk in the stands with some friends. You cheer the good plays and bemoan the bad plays. Is what it is and people are going to say some dumb shit... it's unavoidable.

Sample size on Parker is too small right now. The last two games were the two best defenses on the schedule. I thought he called a great game against OSU until he got cute on the last drive. But even the screen pass was set up perfectly and OSU just made a play.

If ND doesn’t average 42 points in the next two games then it’s a problem.

Anyone else feel Hartmat sits to close to the LOS when he drops back? Seems like he creates pressure sooner by doing that. I'd like him to take 1 more step back.

I think Tyree must have though the punt was tipped.
Does that make it a live ball?
He has to have thought it was a live ball.

Also while overall Tyree did not do much he had a critical "pass breakup" on an interception late in the game.

I think people see duke and assume it's 1999 duke. Elko has been and continues to be one of the greatest defensive minds in the game. We should know. As great as Hartman is, he had a skeleton crew at WR last night that was gassed by mid Q3. The team was one dimensional and still found a way to win. It was about want and gutting it out. But for people to overreact to the passing is laughable. There is a good reason they are tops in pass efficiency defense. It was a short handed win after an emotional train wreck. All things considered, throw out the individual comments and be amazed they found a way to win and cover.

Man I hope their QB is ok. They have NC State, Louisville, FSU coming up. They could make some serious noise on our behalf.

Show me any game thread that isn’t ”pretty cringy” when their team is losing. It’s like saying water is wet.
Thank you im getting tired of this chore. Add my safe space for men to emote and tell em to EAD and you sir can be the apprentice who becomes the master.

I may not be able to show you a game thread, but I can point out posters who aren't embarrassing themselves every 30 seconds like whinny little bitches. It was a Sat night prime time match up that lived up to the hype, I'm just glad I was able to watch while not telling a bunch of strangers exactly how I'm feeling every 25 seconds...lol
Shoulda read on. Friend your know better than anyone else. Please go fuck yourself and eat an engorged penis

What fans have to factor in is how the portal can turn a team around much quicker. Look at Elko’s defense. Those aren’t home grown boys. He either went out and recruited them from the portal or brought them w/ him from TAMU. They’re a solid team but will really be tested now with their QB questionable.

I think Clemson will be a tougher matchup for ND. Prime time game in Death Valley. They got embarrassed last season & haven’t shown up in their big games thus far this season. They ran all over that Duke defense. They’re out of the CFP so this will be their Super Bowl whether they admit it or not.

I one there defense would be better than normal.

This game just like OSU, is about the inability to execute and play good football.

The defense has been playing good but they will get tired and let plays happen. Even with their bad defense I am not sure I believe in the offense to get the job done.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea for the defense to practice tackling this week. Not much can be done about the pass rush but they could improve the tackling with some practice.
I was chuckling about Watts tackling efforts by the 4th quarter.

No, bk last 5 years of tenure pretty much beat every team we had more talent then… we had way more talent than duke

You could say Kelly wouldn’t have responded as well vs Ohio state

Borrowing this from another poster, autrey denson, because sadly, this sums everything up perfectly: “This is perhaps the most talented team I've watched at Notre Dame since the start of the BK era. And it is perhaps the most poorly-coached team I've watched over the same time period.” The talent is there. Sure, there’s spots where it can be better, but nothing is a glaring weakness. It’s a shame because this team is championship worthy; however, the coaching, collectively, isn’t.

Oh well…move on to Louisville.
agree 100%…. There’s so many things bad we aren’t even discussing how bad our tackling is still

Brown, betrand, Burnham, Morrison… the form and effort to tackle is terrible

Not sure if these have been posted but snap counts are always interesting, especially on D. A little more rotation than last week. But Sneed was in for just one play.
