After being able to look at this through a lease of clarity and not anger or disappointment, I’m still quite optimistic this team can put together a special season. This week is make or break, however I don’t have the same feeling of pessimism I have had in years past where ND failed to show up for big games. This team just seems different.

After seeing how damn well they played for 99% of the game, I’m telling you if they play like that against uSC, Duke, Clemson etc, they are going to curb stomp those teams.

We can sit here and talk about how this isn’t a “good” OSU team all we want but the talent that team possesses top to bottom is like nothing else on the schedule.
Right. Everyone keeps harping on the busy push game as the comparison but I think that ISC team was one of the best in CFB history talent wise and ND just wasn’t there talent wise but played out of their skulls to stay in. This one we were evenly matched with a traditional powerhouse elite recruiting blue blood breaking in a new qb. They had their first 22 out there and we won 99% of the game.

I would love to see Ohio State beat Michigan then put us in a New Year's 6 with Michigan

I know this is obvious and cliche but ND just needs to grow at this point... Look at these key lack of execution moments, the hair-brain blunders, and just focus on getting way better each game. With a few nice Top 10 chaos events, ND can be right back in the discussion. I'm pretty sure 'bama had a few NC seasons where there was a key early- or mid-season loss that they regrouped from and went on to win the NC. They just have to get serious and focused and please, no more lame costly mistakes.

Well, what if we beat the PAC-12 champ? For instance.
Who knows. Crazy shit happens. But we need to beat Duke first.

Think the Duke game will be hard for the team to get up for, but they absolutely have to.

Coaching staff needs to be working overtime to make it right for these players, and guide them to a strong finish.

NY6 or bust needs to be the goal from here on out. This team is too good to play in the Pop Tarts Bowl.

I don’t see any scenario short of absolute chaos where playoffs are in the cards now. Think the top 4 is a lock at this point:

SEC Champ
B1G Champ
PAC Champ
FSU or B12 Champ

We need Texas or Oklahoma to lose 2 but win the B12 (very possible)

And/Or FSU dropping a game and losing in ACC rematch with Clemson (very possible)

And/or

OSU to beat Michigan (very possible)

2 of these 3 have to happen IMO, barring something crazy like Georgia/Bama/LSU all losing twice.

Good post, and this why it's sometimes hard to separate a play call from execution. The question we probably need to ask is: what were the odds that Hartman completes this pass? You need an uncovered RB and protection to hold up long enough for him to get open. 50%? 80%? I don't know.
Completion percentage on screen passes?
Try 99%.

I promise you that 99% of screen passes are not complete. Many get thrown away because the RB is covered up. I'd guess something like 60% of called screens get executed for positive yardage.

Images of Buchner throwing balls into the dirt (both last year and this season) also suddenly flash into my head.

Yeah, screens are not completed 99% of the time lol.

Idk about y'all but I'm still absolutely sick to my stomach.

What a fucking blown chance. WE HAD THEM.
Y’all ever think about how crazy the impact of one play/a few seconds can be in the grand scheme? Like if we get the stop to end the game…

- We spend the entire weekend absolutely ecstatic over an all-time performance and result.
- Firmly in playoff discussion.
- Lou Holtz probably doesn’t get bitched at over national broadcast by Ryan Day
- Freeman/coaching staff isn’t under fire for 10 men on the final two plays. If anything, it probably becomes a meme that ND only needed 10 to stop OSU.

Instead…
- Ample “woe is us” on this forum, and we are still where we always are wrt not winning the big game
- Conversations about will we even make the playoffs if we win out, which will be very hard to do.
- Butthurt Ryan Day shows everyone how he was all up in his feels about something an 86-year old man said in a mock segment
- OMG ND only had 10 men on the field two consecutive plays, WTF.

Just funny when you think about it.

That was a beautiful play call. Dumbass Hartman just had to loft it a little more
hartman had a blitzing LB in his face and had to rush it, if he's given a moment longer im sure he would have completed it.

It hasn’t subsided. Not sure it will. This one stung quite a bit.

It will sting even more when this team runs the table, but gets left out.

I would already be creating a plan to get Michael Pratt for next season behind closed doors.

It’s hard cause I’m sure he didn’t know it was that wide open. Lofting is tough for a qb. Pick 6 if not wide open

They are not going to "Curb Stomp" USC or Clemson at home.

Not sure if this was already mentioned, but if Hartman finishes the year strong there is a possibility that he doesn't play in the bowl game. Way too early to speculate, but unless your team is in the semifinal, I just don't think bowl games carry a lot of weight like they used to. If Notre Dame played Michigan and 8 players for both teams combined sat out, it just makes it that much less of a victory to brag about.

It's still Michigan. I'd enjoy watching us kick the crap out of their JV tennis team, and then brag about it all year. And FWIW, they'd probably have more opt-outs than we do. We don't have that many high picks or likely early departures.

I'm curious to see what Hartman would do in that situation. He is not likely to be a high draft pick regardless - this year's QB class is so stacked - and he seems to simply enjoy being a college football player more than most. Maybe he'd take one more ride. And if not, good opportunity for Angeli/Minchey to get some real action.

You think this team with these inexperienced coaches will run the table? MF does shit Kelly did that drove people crazy like go for on 4th down instead of taking the points and he throws in disorganized chaos when the game is actually on the line. 10 players on the field for two plays after a time out. Crazy shit.

No this staff will not run the table. 9-3 is my guess.

Take the points? When our kicker is 3 of 7 on the year? Shrader has a leg but has shown to be pretty inaccurate

Of potential issues to have with MF, I don’t think the decision to go for it on 4th and 1 within OSU territory is one of them. The play calls, on the other hand… but on that front it’s up for discussion whether we point to MF, Gerad, or both

99% was an exaggeration, but even Zach Wilson completes screen passes at a 70% + rate.

I’m just trying to get through Monday my man. The day after the day after is always the worst.
