I swear, it’s like a lot of you don’t watch any college football other than ND. Or maybe it’s just that you don’t micro-manage coaches on other teams. There are a LOT of really stupid coaching decisions that are made by very successful programs every week. The Freeman mistakes stand out to us because that’s the school we care most about.

Go to Message Board Geniuses sometime. Saban gets fired by their fan based every other week.

This is so true……every coaching staff makes decisions that are deemed bad or mistakes but since we can’t watch every single play of every single game every single week…….we don’t see them. We only mainly see the ND games where we over analyze. A good play call is only one that works, right? Well, what if it’s a poor call in the situation and the play still works because someone fell down or someone made an exceptional individual play? It’s no longer a bad play call. If Golden rushes 3 on the 3rd and 19 at the end and Brown intercepts the ball, it’s a good play call. If Brown doesn’t intercept and the OSU WR comes down with the ball, it’s a bad play call? There is plenty of luck involved. We often forget to acknowledge that the play calls depend on execution by us and lack of execution by the opposing team (and a dash of fate or luck).

All you the ND fans calling for MFMF to be fired need to shut the duck up. If you honestly think there is a coach out there who would be a better fit for our program you are crazy. He is a new coach and he will make mistakes. Last night will not be his last mistake, he will make more. Last night sucked balls but when we woke up this morning there are still bald eagles flying all over the country, it's donut and apple cider season, and we live in the best damn country in the world
Freeman is the face of the team. He’s the leader. He needs better assistants. Great example is Deion. You never see that man coach but is a leader of that team and his assistants do their thing. His assistants stink.

This is why he is the right man for the job. This would have never happened in the Kelly era. She just needs to make better coaching decisions.

No offense but I’ll take an old school environment and better coaching. Way easier to create a hype environment than become a great coach. Would ultimately prefer both

Freeman is smart enough to learn from mistakes. These are growing pains.

See the big picture of what a long-term rebuilding of a college football program looks like. And add to it an inexperienced coach that is learning game by game, season by season.

I'm patient. Are you?
Great, great post. I only read the rest of the page your post is on and nothing else.

ND is in great hands with Freeman, he takes chances, some you win & some you lose, like every coach he makes mistakes & he will learn.

Yes I am patient and it will pay off.

Uhhh…that was a Les Miles or Derek Dooley type mistake. Both were fired and are now doing jack shit (Dooley might be an analyst or something somewhere, but that’s it).

Knowingly playing with 10 guys, on the goal line, and after a timeout….I mean, look, you’re just not going to spin it as a typical “stupid coaching decision” or a blunder. It’s one of the bigger f-ups I’ve seen in a long, long time. Even Texas high school chap he’s here in Houston don’t make those kind of mistakes. To do it at that level, Jesus. That shit rolls uphill (to Freeman, to Swarbrick, etc.)

That’s a mistake you absolutely can’t make once. But to make it twice? That’s enough to shake your faith.

Except this isn’t a rebuild. His first ever game as a HC was in a NY6 bowl game. He was given the keys to a top 10 program in an attempt to take it over the top with his recruiting.

No offense but you weren’t there. The fans showed out for this team because MF has been coaching well. The crowd was loud without the incentives. He’s a young coach with a steeper learning curve than anyone would like, but he doesn’t make excuses and gets to it with this team. If they come out and lay an egg against Duke, have at him, but I don’t think his character is for show.

This isn’t exactly true. He is flat out not telling the truth about the 10 man thing.

My guys lost a NC when Clemson ran the same fricking pick play at the end of the game that they had scored on earlier in the game. Should Saban have been fired? No. Kirby has won the last two NCs even with his below average game management.

Freeman is an excellent up and coming coach who has what I think is the “it” factor. Great recruiter and good but not yet great coach. The only failure from last night is if he and his staff doesn’t learn from it. He will get the Irish there if he stays in South Bend. Bookmark this post.

I’ve never seen you this mad, Lucky, but it’s understandable. It was a shit loss and tough to be optimistic. I get it. We’ll learn more (not everything) this week about MF and this team versus Duke.
Lucky Lucci is right. BK left a decent team and program for MF. We have paid again and again for poor execution and lack of experience. Whether it was last year not going to Portal to get an experienced QB, not staying on 5 stars until they actually sign, not understanding that the BOT isn't going pay for a Buy-out unless you really fight for it, or to oversee your staff so they don't do a prevent defense at the end of the game and let the QB or not have enough defenders on the field. Every misstep has been costly.

The list is long and getting longer.

MF is a likable guy but he is not an elite HC.

He has not been “coaching” well, he’s running the program well.

I disagree. We were in the position we were on Saturday because the team was consistent the first four games. Criticize him for Saturday, fine, but give him credit where it’s due.
When will there be accountability? He and the staff lost that game. He sounds a lot like BK with his Presser just less angry and more soft spoken. "Analytics say we should go for it on 4th down inside the 50." BK is that you???

How about making sure you have 11 men on the defense at the end of the game, Marcus?????

He is too soft and is not ready for prime time. Too nice, too soft.

We had 3 cupcakes and one ok opponent where we didn’t play that great until the fourth quarter

We’ll learn Saturday

Look, I'm pissed at him and the staff too, but what do you expect him to do? Resign? Fire Golden on the spot?

Nobody is going to want to play for a coach who fires their DC after giving up 17 points, regardless of the context.

Everybody's mad and rightfully so, but if you're looking for clarity and answers from a press conference, I don't know what to tell you. That's not how it works. ANYWHERE.

Media shouldn’t give him a free pass either even if we know we won’t get the full truth

I was hoping/expecting an honest assessment of what happened. You can do that without dropping names and blowing up the program.

We didn’t get that. We got insight into the literal split second thought Freeman had about not running a dude on the field late. Considering the moment, feels like more was needed.

That last time out he called was as puzzling as playing 10 men for the last two drives. It looks like ohio may have jumped offsides before the refs blew TO.

I think Al Washington might have to go. We’ll see how the DL does the rest of the year.

Sampson basically said the honeymoon period with freeman learning on the job is over and a new phase begins. Patience is gong to run thin.

Freeman knew they had 10 men but didn’t want to take the penalty to allow OSU to regroup & gain 1/2 a yard. Parker is outsmarting himself in key situations getting too creative. Going away from their identity.
