Welcome back for WEEK ONE.
We got spoiled with a Week Zero primer from our Irish, which went swimingly. We get to watch them again this week for the *actual* Week One... and it should hopefully be another nice ramp-up/warmup for the good guys.
Outside of ND, though... WE GET A FULL FIVE DAYS OF ACTION THIS WEEKEND. BLESS THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL CALENDAR.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 31
- New Big XII member UCF gets us off and running as they host Kent State... haven't done any research on them, because as a loyal Cincy guy, fuck UCF.
- UPSET ALERT: NC State, ND's first real test of the season (next week), can't get caught looking ahead. UConn has an athlete at QB and an experienced HC.
- THIS GAME IS MASSIVE... if Cam Rising weren't hurt. The Gators get a chance to steal a road win as Utah is missing their best player... but UF still needs to show improvement behind transfer Graham Mertz to pull it off in a hostile environment.
- Matt Rhule and PJ Fleck are either going to be the best of friends, or absolutely hate each other. Two weird personalities. Let's find out!
- Dakota schools make shit weird. Missouri was surprisingly competent at times last year. Can they hit the ground running and actually be relevant in the SEC East race?
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1
- SCOUT: The Irish host CMU the week between NC State and Ohio State. Trap??? Let's see how good CMU really is, first, as they go to East Lansing.
- Miami is the Cradle of Coaches. It was a University before Florida was a state. Therefore, Miami of Ohio is "Miami" and The U is "Miami (FL)" and that's it.
- The return of the prodigal son, Jeff Brohm, to Louisville. Will it go as well as everyone seems to think? His first matchup is again the rare interim-that-got-promoted at GT, Brent Key.
- SCOUT: If you can stay up late enough for the first #HawaiiTest of the season (even though it's not a TRUE Hawaii Test, with an 11pm kick rather than 11:59pm), you'll get your first look at Stanford under new leadership. They hired a good offensive coach with no DI experience... let's see what the Cardinal offense looks like, because Hawaii isn't bad, and Stanford may need to open it up to compete.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 - WAKE UP, THERE'S FOOTBALL ON
- Early slate is pretty meh. scUM scheduling NOBODY for nonconference play is the most 'meh' of all. Cowards.
- Joe Milton, former scUM QB, gets the full-time gig for the Vols. He's got an absolute cannon of an arm... but can he do everything else necessary to win? Hendon Hooker left big shoes to fill. Virginia might be bad.
- DEION VS THE SCHOOL THAT SPURNED HIM. SHEDEUR VS THE OC THAT DISRESPECTED HIM. LOUIS VUITTON VS ESTABLISHED CULTURE. This one has all the makings of a soap opera, so I expect a normal, sleepy, week-one-at-12pm game.
- I like watching Fresno State, idk why
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 - PRE-DINNER FOOTBALL
- GO IRISH. BEAT FCS SCHOOL. Get the third string plenty of reps. Angeli should get so much work that Minchey actually gets two drives.
- The Buckeyes don't have a QB yet that I'm aware of. Kyle McCord was named starter, but did he earn it? Or is he just getting first crack at it? Either way, Buckeyes should handle this one on overall talent alone... though trips to Bloomington sometimes make them sweat.
- UPSET ALERT: Huskies getting way too much hype right now. Boise is the perfect week-one opponent to nip it in the bud.
- Simply tuning into Texas for second-half action to see how much Arch plays.
- The debut of a Luke Fickell defensive unit being supported by one of the best OC's out there and his Air Raid attack. Wiscy will be nasty in a year or two... maybe quicker.
- GO BEARCATS.
- Something different to flip to during commercials, and something to bridge that late half-hour gap between the afternoon and late games.
