I will say that Jayson certainly did not live up to his recruiting rating/ranking. His body just couldn't handle adding the necessary weight and he was plagued by multiple injuries that limited his physical development.

However, to say he did not improve from his Sophomore year is pretty funny. In fact, I'm kind of shocked one would even have that opinion.

In 2021, as a 13 game starter and his last season coached by Elston, he had 50 total tackles, 8.5 TFL's, and 4 sacks. That is 6 less tackles, 1.5 more TFL's, and 3 more sacks than he had in his previous 3 seasons and 28 football games played, combined.

Some of these narratives are just bizarre.

I actually agree with the didn't improve but from Jr to Sr not Soph to Sr, and in reality i thought they were out of shape last year and slower.

Jayson went from 29 solos in 21 to 9 in 22. He still made some splash plays but didn't have a solo sack after the Cal game last year.

I just want to say a few things about this.

People have compared the numbers reported on these lists, and numbers teams’ staffs give out to the media, to their actual combine results and they aren’t even close.
All these numbers are exaggerated.
Riley Mills wasn’t running 21 mph, Hart wasn’t running 23 mph.
Those are blips that are common on the hardware they wear.
They monitor the sprints of the fastest athletes in the world, and during the World Cup, two broke 23 mph. In the NFL, very few reach 22 mph.
And I’ve seen these training staffs coach pull-ups, & they aren’t doing 45.
A normal person, who can do 10 legit pull-ups, can do 20-25 the way they have them do them. They don’t want inflammation in the elbows or shoulders, so they have them both not go all the way up or down, which is the hardest part of a pull-up. A pull-up is your chin clears, not you stick your chin up towards the bar, and your arms lock at the down position.

Dudes in these lists report 4.25 40’s, then get to the combine & run 4.45
Happens every year.

First year without Elston was difficult for that room sans Foskey. Most of that room did not live up to expectations with Washington in his first season. This wasn't Jayson specific. Looking forward to things being different this season.

Also, he dealt with a couple of nagging injuries (concussion and rib contusion) that kept him out of a couple games and I'm sure impacted him to some degree. At regular seasons end, (he sat bowl game) he had more sacks and TFL's than both Rylie Mills and Howard Cross.

What was the d-line michigan number last year. Wasnt like a vertical that was 4 inches higher than any d-lineman in the hx of the combine?

I don't know but I did see some posts at 247 like this that illustrates how truly ridiculous some of UM's numbers for this are.

Agreed…..doing 20 pull-ups using strict form vs. 40 pull-ups with significant kipping, bouncing at the bottom and/or lack of range doesn’t mean you can really do 40 pull-ups correctly.

Jayson didn't live up to his recruiting rankings but was a quality starter for multiple seasons. Justin probably overperformed his rankings and became a solid rotational player. Both guys gave, what, five years to this program and helped Notre Dame win a lot of football games, graduated and never caused a whiff of trouble ever.
Not sure why these guys need to rag on guys.

That makes sense. Even 15 (legit) pull-ups is relatively impressive. My jaw dropped when I heard 40+.

Agree. I am pretty excited about the LB group this season. The mix of veterans and young talent is gonna be fun to watch. Not sure why the ND fan base doesn’t appreciate the veteran LBs.
