Did the same thing at a dealership a few months ago. They wanted $450 and 2 hours to replace my headlight bulbs 😂. I went to auto zone and bought the brightest ones for $65 and did it myself in 15 minutes.

Why can't people be honest when they turn in their notice?

Had a guy turn in his notice. His reason for leaving was he had an offer allowing him to work from home some and he's getting a decent bump in salary. When he tells me where he's going, I know the salary he's been offered isn't nearly what he said he's going to get. While we haven't officially allowed employees to work from home, I've let this guy do 2-3 days a week for a couple of years now. Against my better judgement I ask him if he would stay if he can officially work from home a couple of days a week and get a decent increase. He says he'll stay as he likes working here.

I can do the increase easily, but our owner has had a hard stand against people working from home. After some back and forth discussion, the owner says he'll allow it as long as our labor attorney says it's okay, because he's still not going to allow other departments to do it. Attorney gives a thumbs up, so I tell the guy I got him a raise and he can work from home two days a week.

He then tells me he's going to take the other position and starts citing the cost of our medical insurance and the drive to and from work and road construction as factors.

It went against my better judgement to try and work things out, but I did it anyway as this guy has never been a problem, is a good worker and we get a long great (he's an ND fan). Yet, here we are. Just be honest up front. The silver lining? Now I can officially offer work from home instead of doing it on the QT.

That is pretty shitty of them to not be honest, seems like he was just leveraging you for as much as he could possibly get from the new position.

On your boss, I don't understand the owners who are still fighting telecommuting. If your job allows it, i.e. you can get the job done just as well at home as you can in the office, you're going to lose employees when they get job offers that offer remote work, plain and simple. Not only am I saving money for gas and keeping miles/wear and tear off my vehicle, but I got back 1.5 - 2 hours of my day without that hellish commute to downtown Detroit.

At least your boss seems to be giving in a bit, albeit begrudgingly.

Never paid too much attention to the Rock N Roll hall of fame,… idk why really but I’ve been aware of controversy from my peripheral etc. Today I saw a list of artists/groups in vs artists/ groups not and good lord… BTO, Lightfoot, Styx, Boston, Band Company, Kansas, Croce, Grand Funk, Motörhead and others not only aren’t in but it seems pretty clear most listed are no longer being considered,… while Biggie, Neil Diamond, Public Enemy and Foo Fighters are?? Good lord, I was pleased to see there’s major momentum for finally getting Mariah Carey in however because obviously.

These are fair criticisms to home work, but I can tell you from my corporate office days, it's way less with the dog needing to be let our or interupting than the coworker distractions when people would just come up to your desk and shoot the breeze or the "water cooler" chats. It's all breakeven, IMO.

Not to mention I feel much more inclined to work late when I'm working from home and don't have to commute; me working an extra hour and still logging off at 6/6:30 vs. leaving at 5 and getting home at 6/6:30 works out better for me and my employer.

Glad you got that approval, should help you not only retain staff, but will make you more attractive when you are hiring for open positions!

My company is essentially all outside labor. Its currently 92 and our crews are pretty miserable. Our dipshit office admin (my aunt) just asked one of our crew leads if he could start her car for her so it would be cold when she got in. This kid is wearing boots, jeans, long sleeve shirt and hard hat. She is sitting inside an office with the a/c she has set at 68....... God bless this young man cause if he would have slashed her tires I would have understood.

I drank 4 gallons of water and still lost 9 pounds in 10 hours. That's 41 lbs of H2O that went through my system. Freaky.

The temp on top of the black rail car was 175 degrees. And no... they do not pay me enough to do that more than once every 6 months.

Yep, the percentage of people that accept a counter offer and stay longer than about 1- 1 1/2 years is very low. I was hoping he'd stay for selfish reasons. Would have been less painful in about a year as a couple of big projects would have been wrapped up by then.
