Well, if he goes to OSU, we can’t say that the staff didn’t try or that there were inconsistencies in his recruitment. There was a year gap between visits from the 2022 to 2023 B&G games, but he was always a top priority throughout.

Getting a Cali kid on campus twice in a two month span is quite remarkable.

OSU has a higher success rate for LBers (in an NFL draft context) and have one of the best 21st century CFB linebackers “coaching” the position.

As much as I like taking a flyer on Kahoun & Rezac, two long, rangy athletes that can run, ND really needs to stabilize the LB class and the LB room moving forward with a proven recruit that can atleast guarantee you some sort of higher floor.
Do they? We have 3 Butkus award winner in the last 10 or so years all of which were early second round draft picks. Linebacker might be OSUs worst position group the last 10 years.

It’s their worst group yet they’ve put more LBers in the league in the last five than ND has had in the last ten.

Tranquill, Smith, JOK, and Te’o. All second round picks as you said, but that’s it.

OSU has had Pete Werner, Baron Browning, Malik Harrison, Jerome Baker, and Raekwon McMillan all go in the last five years. And all were Top 100 picks. No first round guys, you could count Darron Lee in ‘16 but he was a bust.

That’s five vs our four. Where were they drafted (understanding Jaylon was predicted top 5 pre-injury)?

Werner and McMillan were second round picks. Browning, Harrison and Baker were third rounders.

We had three second rounders and one fourth rounder in Tranquill. If people want to call that a draw vs. OSUs drafted LBers, then fine, I’m cool with that. But the point was that it takes ND ten years to do what OSU did in five.

Yep no more of this having the first visit. We need to push for the last.

OSU had the last or only OV for 55% of the players who took OV’s to them in the 2023 class. It’s unreal how often they get the last OV. There’s no way that’s just a coincidence, and it’s very smart on their end.

I wonder if the staff would be better off just saying “look, schedule your OV’s with the other schools and then come back to us.”

This I brought up in another thread why did we schedule all our recruits official visits in the summer? I get they want to wrap up the class but it leaves zero room for error if we get someone to decommit. I’d rather bring kids in against USC or Ohio State win a big game like that and you’ll get a crap load of guys wanting to come here

Feels like most kids want to have a decision before their senior year starts?

You sometimes wonder the little things that play an impact on the overall lifecycle of a commitment - this (having the last visit) being one of the major ones (kids are impressionable).

Obviously we are sometimes falling short on this one. Would love to know why, as you pointed out. It also opens the door to think about what other recruiting subtleties we’re probably missing the mark on.

I want to randomly land a top 10 player we have no shot at… I feel like we deserve it.

I feel like a lot of IE posters families deserve to be happy too. 😉

Been a while, right? 10+ years ago (granted I didn’t follow recruiting as closely) we would occasionally get big name recruits that I wasn’t expecting and it gave me hope lol

We need to back door our way in like with Hamilton. But would Hamilton stick with ND is this NIL environment?
