You guys are better judging prospects than I am. Why is he rated lower by the recruiting services?

Top 200, four-star, from TX with offers from Georgia, TX, LSU, USC, Oklahoma, etc.....not sure what you're seeing.

I think it's that only 2 have him in the top 200 and none have him in the top 10 at his position and only 1 have him in the top 15 at his position. You would think with that offer list most would have him solidly inside the top 200 if not inside the top 150 and would be at least inside the top 15 at his position. Some have him outside the top 30 at his position.

Sorry some people are acting like he’s closer to a top 50 player. I’m still bitten by Andrew trumbetti being ranked a top 100 player.

He was born in Akron, OH. An Ohio State offer would change things here.

I really hope that offer doesn't come if that is truly the case, but he said it himself.

I don't put a ton of stock into rankings tbh. But 247 Composite has him at 173 nationally and 15 positionally.

He looks a bit skinny to me. Maybe not an instant impact guy but Balis may be the most important piece to his success in year 2 IMO.
He measured in a few weeks ago at 6-4/215. I think you'd be accurate in this assessment. He still has this summer before his senior year to lift. Then spring and summer prior to his freshman year of college.

Impressive vertical and a 4.7 forty is fine for an edge. I'm way more impressed with his first step off the snap. He's consistently very good when it comes to that in the highlights.

Honestly, I want ND to be in a place where true freshmen aren’t even in a position to have instant impact.
If ND recruits & develops the way we hope, freshmen will have multiple strings of studs ahead of them.

Correct. Especially at positions such as OL and DL. Freshmen should ONLY play because they're instant impact players. Not because they "have to" due to lack of depth/talent.

Yup. Bama and Georgia have very few impact freshmen, especially early in the season. You want to see the flashed late in the season and garbage time. The later is an issue ND has had because they play everyone close (or so it seems)

If we land Thomas, who else do we target for the DL/DE? Rushing and Scott?

The two remaining outside guys at the top of the board are Mylachi Williams & Rushing. I think both could offer positional flexibility, to be both VYPERs and base/field ends.

Then there are some Tier II targets like the Hawaiian kid, Laufele, and a few others. But if Thomas shuts it down and commits, you’ll see the staff only focus on the two aftermentioned players.

I think his long term physical growth is a question mark. I don’t believe he’ll ever be large enough to play as a base end, but he moves so well and tested extremely well. He looks to be the quintessential VYPER that Golden wants to stockpile. Likely will be 6’4” 240 that can play in space and come off the edge.

And in college fb, you can do this. Hybrids are great when you have 85 schollys. In the NFL with the limited rosters, you can’t do this

I think those days have sailed unfortunately. And yes the tops have their depth for now. But in todays landscape with every Tom, Dick, and Harry offering immediate pay, and play, it’s gonna get harder and harder for even them to retain their backups.

At skill positions maybe. But how many linemen - on either side of the ball - are walking in and playing real minutes as true freshmen? No matter their NIL deals they're just not physically mature enough.
And for that matter why would we play an 18 year ol in the trenches when we can go get a grown-ass grad transfer like JJB who has had four years in a high-level college S&T program?

Trumbetti showed a lot of promise as a Freshman (had 5.5 TFL’s) and some as a Sophomore (had a big game against OSU in Fiesta Bowl).

Sadly, I think he was another guy that got ruined by BVG. That and I believe he had a pretty bad concussion or two.

I believe it came to light after he left that BVG did away with positional meetings. Imagine how much development is lost when that occurs.

The point is retaining your depth. Could’ve used Jacob Lacey this year. I just foresee it getting harder with time. Yes, Freshman lineman rarely make instant impacts but when they’ve been in the system a year or two and TAMU makes an offer then what? If they know their still buried on the depth chart, or not necessarily a starter and are being offered a starting position elsewhere, it’s going to be awful attractive. I think loyalty is fading, which maybe part of the reason we see the staff moving on from recruits, and accepting more upside than polish.

Just mentioning that hilljack slapdick triggers me into middle aged rage that I go out of my way to suppress. It's stupid and trivial for me to dislike someone as much as I dislike that guy. Just fucking Voldemort him and let it be done.

Not to get too off topic, but Trumbetti and Michael Deeb were both first team Koon bod squad for sure and it was sad that neither worked out.

However, by having looked up the name, it appears Deeb plays on the Savanah Bananas now. So happy endings and all....

He used to, like 3 years ago. I went to a SB game two summers ago and he was no longer with them, he was playing in the midwest somewhere if my memory serves me. SB no longer play in that summer college ballplayers league its straight Banana Ball for them now.

He is still on the roster and has posted about the bananas on his socials within the past few months

Wow would be huge
I think that would be an overstatement. Kid is clearly thin and rankings are clearly factoring that in. Also in terms of being a Top 250 kid and Top 15 in his position, this should be the floor of what ND lands. Shouldnt be this hard to land a stud DE that is even better quite frankly.

Guembly and Scott are in the "huge" category on the DL IMHO.

Look at his size, weight & ranking…then compare it to the kid who just went 40th overall in the draft at the same age.

6’3 210 ranked 173 (size before Jr year)
6’3.5 220 ranked 203 (size after Jr year)
