Brian Johnson would be a home run hire. Excellent at developing QB’s. The only downside is he would more than likely only be here for a year 2 max

The key is Freeman has to build the program up where we can get a Brian Johnson type every two years. As long as we’re winning and landing elite recruits to work with it is possible.

He would be awesome but I can't see him walking out of Colorado after just getting there a few weeks ago.
It isn't likely, but we've seen it happen before.

Reach out and make the call. Worst he says is no. I'd take him over Candle without a second thought.

A high scoring offense will absolutely help, but if they aren't consistently on those top QB prospects and other skill talent, they aren't coming to ND, particularly now that nil is a factor. The days of "ND recruits itself" for those skill positions were over 30 years ago.

It's my second biggest critique of Golden, next to the putrid red zone D. We simply haven't heard enough of him making an impact on the trail for difference makers. It was possible to an extent, due to the MF being a defensive guy and having established relationships with the '23 class, but certainly needs to improve.
Their names are Freeman, Coach DMC, Stuckey, and Bowden. Considering that it's very likely, whoever they hire, won't be here long term, we'd rather have the relationships connected to Freeman, Bowden, etc. It's precisely what they pitched Carr from the beginning.

The next phase of Freeman's evolution as HC is proving/convincing the prospects, their parents, coaches, etc. that he's the next Dabo, Saban, etc. He does that by bringing in a fresh OC that puts up impressive results right away. He's now the guy that hires the guy. It cements his place at the top of food chain of HC's. That is a bigger sell than a swaggy OC. If this next OC bombs on the field with a Heisman hopeful QB, it doesn't matter how much of a dawg on the trail the next OC is. It'll be an uphill battle trying to convince these young men that Freeman will be at ND long. Another 8-9 win regular season is not going to cut it with this group.

The only person you want to stay long term is Freeman. I think recruits are getting used to coordinators leaving and unfortunately, coaches are now getting used to players transferring. Basically its the Program and the HC that matter long-term.

Arroyo is a bad OC.

His offenses at Oregon were Top 25 in PPG each year, and also averaged nearly 200 yards rushing per game . Herbert went from three-star HS prospect into a Top 10 NFL selection under his offense.

I don't think he's bad by any means, but I'm curious of your reasoning.

What is the consensus on Arroyo? Sounds like Cristobal and Miami might be kicking the tires on him Opinion: Marcus Arroyo is going to be the next O.C. of the Miami Hurricanes
He's a west coast guy and he has a reputation out there as a good recruiter. His three years at Oregon in a snippet:

2017 Total Offense: 440.9
2018: 427.2
2019: 433.1

I believe he ran out of the Pistol there. His time at UNLV started with Covid. 2-10 in 2021, 5-7 in 2022. 7-23 overall and they had enough after those 30 games. He's coached everything but OL in his career up until now.

Worth a Zoom interview you'd think. I'm sure he thought he could build a culture at UNLV. He's 43 years old and is probably going to need a good OC gig to rebuild himself after his first HC job going bust.

Is it me but do any of you not like the optics of a possible OC candidate reaching out to ND instead of the other way around???
I mean, it's Notre Dame...among one of the most prestigious and respected football institutions in college football, and you'd be hard pressed to name many programs that provide more exposure for a coach, offensively or defensively. You're under a microscope here.

It makes perfect since that someone would be interested in "applying" for the job

I don't know about you guys, but I'd much rather land an OC who is so successful that he leaves in a year or two for a head coaching gig than an OC lifer who may not move the needle as much. Continuity is great and all, but production is the big key. That, and being able to leverage that production into elite recruiting.

I’d rather have a guy who has proved successful in college right now and in the long run. No more nfl Weis let alone a qb coach.

Miami just pipped Lance Guidry as DC after he just left Marshall for Tulane.

So ND can at least call Sean Lewis if they wanted to as far as I'm concerned.

Interesting no mention of Moorhead. Were I a betting man I’d put money on the unnamed “high-level P5 offensive coordinator.” Freeman seems like a “loose lips sink ships” type.

He is currently a head coach so I’m not sure he’d fall into that unnamed “high level P5 offensive coordinator”

Ryan Grubb being linked after turning down Bama is real interesting. Has a good situation in UW with Penix back likely for a darkhorse Heisman run

A recurring theme from coaches to FootballScoop during the past month has been the desire of those with college experience now in the NFL to remain in the NFL, and former NFL coaches now back in the college game oftentimes are seeking to return to the NFL.

“Quality of life is so much better now in the NFL,” one coach said. “You think guys WANT to deal with NIL and the (NCAA Transfer) Portal and the recruiting calendar?”
This should not come as a surprise to anyone. It's going to get considerably worse in the next few years, too.

I am not going to play "Tommy Rees as ND head coach in six years" on the ol' binga card.
