There is no way to improve the defensive numbers and it's not just a "our guys suck on that side/aren't tough." problem. When you only have a 7 man rotation, you have to play soft and avoid fowls. ND is one of the least penalized teams in the country because our lineup literally can't handle foul trouble. We aren't going to win any games that we can't score 80 in. That's not a formula for success.

I struggle to understand how we're over 20 years in Brey's tenure, yet he thinks this is the way to build a roster and play winning basketball. It just comes off as pure lazy to me; you couldn't get out there and recruit a few more role players, or even do the bare minimum and find a couple of more transfers who can give you 5-10 minutes a game?

He has to go. I had high hopes for this team with the veterans returning but clearly we have no answer for the loss of Atkinson and we play charmin soft basketball.

I guess the silver lining here is that idk how Starling has enough on his resume after this year to be a one and done. I have absolutely no sources or intel but I just worry about him transferring after this dumpster fire of a season, coupled by the prospects of Brey retiring/getting fired.

Should have beat this team by 40. Awful.
Starling trying his all to get out of Dodge before next year. He looked great late.

Don't forget the other ND game today. Looks like it could be a good one. +2.5 seems like a gift from DK.

This team is awfully bad, it's hard to find anything positive to say.

Brey needs to go or retire. I miss the days where he got really pumped up on the sidelines. ND has reached their ceiling with Brey.

Starling should not be a one & done, he is nowhere close to where Blake Wesley was last season. What will transferring do for him, is he a 5* bust?

Go get Shaka Smart from Marquette.

Didn't watch but Starling's minutes and production were way down. He had really been coming on until yesterday's game. Anyone see it?

Hard to pay attention to ND MBB, whenever I see them they look terrible. No defense, no rebounding, turnovers galore by "seasoned" vets, never have a big man, and seem to just want to throw up 3s. The 7 man rotation is a losing proposition. ND need to start looking for a young Coach that will recruit and get them to a respectable level in the ACC. Brey had his years, but time to move on.

Another loss this time to a Boston College team that is always close to the bottom in the ACC. We look like we will be the bottom.

Ugh, another bad loss at BC. Lead for the first 39 minutes and gave up a 10-0 run to lose by 7. Just a complete collapse down the stretch. Still looking for the first ACC win of the season.

Idk if I’ve ever been more out and wrong on a team than this one. Program needs fresh blood in a bad way

I highly doubt Brey will give up and resign after this year. Jack will have to fire him. Will he? Does he give a shit?
I have no idea

This may be the worst Notre Dame team I can remember. Brey is absolutely tarnishing his legacy. Dude is checked out.

I knew this team was going to be bad, but I didn't think it was be THIS BAD. The seriously look like they may win like 4 games the rest of the year.

When you see nothing but comments about Brey needing to go, its probably that time for him to call it quits. Maybe a mid season change at the coaching spot will light a fire? I mean one can hope right? I feel like the players on the team do have talent, or at least they have all shown at one time or another they can play solid basketball.

And this isn't even the biggest concern IMO. Next season the roster will have:

G - Starling (if he doesn't leave after 1 season)
F - Lubin (16 minutes per game, has some upside to his game)
G - Wade (walk on)
G - Sanders Jr. (averaging 4 minutes in 3 seasons)
F - Campbell (averaging 2 minutes this season in 6 games as a freshman)
G - Konieczny (Redshirting his sophomore year)
F - Zona (averaging 4 minutes in 3 seasons)

G - Burton (4 star - 114 national player)
G - Friedreichsen - (4 star - 121 national player)
F - Dunlap - (3 star - 150 national player)

If you thought Kelly left pieces of the roster with not much depth, Brey 100% told everyone to hold his beer.

I thought with the veteran core returning, we would be competing for a tourney spot again, but I admit I severely underestimated the loss of Atkinson. I didn't realize Nate would be that useless in post defense but as good as he is offensively, our opponents are quite literally just attacking Nate in the paint as they're well aware he's useless in there. It certainly doesn't help that the team is clearly instructed to avoid fouling at all costs since we have such a limited rotation of players, which just augments the softness defensively.

I agree the future is pretty bleak. Next year is going to be even worse, unless whoever they bring in to succeed Brey finds some absolute gems in the transfer portal.

Starling is as good as gone; I'm mentally preparing for him to be a one and done.

You can't assume everyone is going to stick around in today's day in age. Coaching changes can annihilate rosters, especially in basketball where the number of contributors is so small.

Next year's roster is already annihilated. The good news is we could probably take 5 transfers. And if Brey is the coach, we won't.

This is absolutely what needs to happen....Brey realizes it's his time....They actually spend some time and money to get a new/upcoming coach, and that new coach brings in transfers to make them competitive....But I just don't see it. Brey's contract goes until 24/25 season. That's when we'll see someone new.

I can't believe we're not even through the first week of January and already playing the "what if" game but imagine if we actually landed Grant Basile, how much different this team would be. Instead, he's going to score 35 points against us in February.

Damning that Brey wasn't able to identify a decent 5 for this team in the portal. Trying to insert Nate and Lubin into that role like a square peg through a round hole. (Oh, and Lubin blew out his knee Tuesday night, so we've got that going for us, too).
