IF Hartman is coming, maybe he can bring Rondell Bothroyd (DL) with him. That would be an amazing addition to our DL room.
5 seasons: 136 tackles, 16.5 sacks.
Last two season; 93 tackles, 14 sacks 4 fourced fumbles, and 3 pass deflections.
Wow, I hadn't realized such a quality DL had entered the portal from Wake. Bothroyd would be a nice splash. Looks like we are indeed pursuing him according to Tom Loy FWIW

Loy has said that ND will pursue him.

Not sure if he is quite athletic enough to play VYPER in the true way that it is designed to be, but he would be a bigger body with length on the edge that can bring some element of pass rush to the defense next season.

I wouldn't really call him a big body though. I think that is the point trying to be made. IMO
He's been playing on the interior and doing so very adequately for multiple years now. I have no idea how one could structure an accurate assessment of next years interior DL without him. Seems bizarre.

The initial discussion was about not having experienced larger bodies on the interior. Which is why I feel that moving Mills full-time inside would help close that gap. There is Rubio who played quite a bit this year, but the other two bigger body dudes are Big K and Onye - one who is coming off injury and the other who hasn't played yet, Cross has nearly 1,000 career snaps, but still is about 6'1'' 275/280.

While 6'1'' 280 is big in the normal world, as a college football DT, it's a little on the smaller side.

Howard Cross is not a true Top 20 starting large 300 pound one technique.

Howard Cross can at least adequately - good play one technique.

Petty sure that’s what you’re both saying.

ND would benefit from Cross/Mills playing 3 technique depending on package/situation and having someone else than can man the one technique and SDE.

That's been the problem for a minute. Seems like ND has a surplus of 3T bodies, and they've been trying to play them at other spots.

ND would definitely benefit from having a rotation of Mills and Cross at 3T, however, would Cross be willing to stick around to be in a platoon, when he could go somewhere for his 5th year and start.

It's also a question of if NaNa is ready to start and is somebody like Ehrensberger ready to log in major minutes.

ND could also be moving towards a more natural 3-man front, with a stand up Vyper and have a 3-man front of say, Mills, Rubio and Cross.

I have actually have expected this to be the case for 2023 since before we even started 2022.

Painful watching Shrader and Syracuse keep shooting themselves in the foot in the Pinstripe Bowl with turnovers and bad decisions (and throws) by the QB. It would be SO much better to have Hartman over a QB like Shrader.

Is there a chance our front 7 could be better next year? I don’t know, replacing Foskey is tough and we lack size inside. LBs should be more athletic.
I dunno, Lax. I suspect Bertrand and Kiser will make up 2/3 of the LB corps. And I don't see how we can lose Foskey, not sign an instant-impact frosh nor anyone of significance from the portal (as of today) and be better.

If Bertrand/Liafau/Kiser can’t be more productive next year, then ND is gonna be at a crossroads where they continue to accept mediocre play or finally let the more athletic underclassmen earn their shot. Hopefully, those 3 step up for their final season in blue & gold.

DJ U to Oregon St
Mertz to Florida
Card to Purdue
Altmyer to Illinois
Plummer to Louisville
Leary to Kentucky

Sure seems like if you squint hard enough you can imagine everyone quickly found a chair once Hartman to ND privately got in motion. Bo Nix returning as well. All are these are connected to some degree, particularly DJ U - Card - Altmyer.

I think they would all benefit from fewer snaps.

I don't think the defensive setup is gonna be that close to what we have seen recently. I agree there is not a clear cut rushing specialists, but I'm very curious where this defense goes in 2023. There is still some time in the portal and development is certainly needed in a number of areas.

Rylie Mills could have a huge year. Tyson Ford with a year under his belt. Gabe Rubio as well. Junior moving to vyper is interesting. Howard Cross and Ademiola will be huge pieces.

Collectively, it’s a talented group. No one will replace Foskey so it’ll have to be a group effort.

An upgrade in athleticism at LB is huge.

Can’t hit if you don’t take swings, and buddy they need as many swings as possible in that QB room.

Taking 3 in the space of a week is wild though be interesting to see how it shakes out

I think he’s their second behind Nick Evers, but this will get them to four scholarship arms. I think they only have one QB returning, and he was a lightly regarded true freshman last year. And then their incoming freshman.

Tanner actually makes a lot of sense. Nick Evers is raaaaaaaaaw, and I can’t imagine he learned much at that disaster at OU.

Yeah as long as Evers isn’t walking in expecting to start this season, they are setting up their pipeline nicely.

In the aggregate? Maybe. The linebackers could be significantly better athleticism wise, especially if Kiser moves inside.

But on the line? Losing Foskey is hard with the current roster. Even if Justin A takes a big step next year it’s still a downgrade. Maybe Mills and/or Cross can be monsters at 3T but 1T will still be an issue and SDE is a problem unless Nana really makes a giant push. So I really just don’t see it.
