In general I agree completely. I’d rather we develop our own players, over time. You know what you have and it helps with cohesion and culture, which matters a lot in this sport. Personally I don’t think the teams that rely heavily on the portal are going to be able to sustain any success they might have.

That said, most years there are going to be three or four spots where a grad transfer is going to be pretty valuable for us. This year one of those is DL. And the fact that we seemingly can’t land a high-quality DL from just up the road b/c we’re being outbid by FSU and USC - if that’s indeed what’s going on here - is pretty troubling. That has to change, at least with grad transfers, or we’re going to seriously hamstring ourselves.

The only silver lining is that we can look at the success of our recruiting. If you can land a high BCR in every class, with each position having depth and quality, then, in theory, you won't need to look at the portal as often to fill your needs.

Of course, that's not a perfect theory. You will always miss on some recruits, some will transfer, and some will medically retire - and that's how holes develop on your roster/depth chart. Furthermore, some can argue that ND's level of success recruiting, even with Freeman instead of Kelly, will never amount to any true success at a championship level.

But recruiting high schoolers alone won't be enough.

Florida State won’t even be good next year

How come?

Give me something more then your typical "they're Florida State" or "they suck" statements.

They went 9-3 this year. Jordan Travis, who finally showed that he can be a good college QB this season, will be returning for a sixth year.

They've done well in the portal so far, and have managed to keep their losses to a minimal exodus.

I see 3-4 losses on their schedule maybe 5.

Do you think he cares? He wants to play against a P5 schedule for NFL film and to get a decent payday as a backup plan.

If ND isn't paying him I don't blame him for going to FSU. Especially if he has an easier path to playing time there.

Fiske what can you offer to make sure my family can see all my games.
Florida State- here’s 100,000 to commit here and we will also give your parents a house to stay in during the season and 25,000 to cover any flights

Ugh. We need to pay transfers who are proven and likely starters. It’s not the same as paying 25 high school signees up front
We’re talking 2-3 guys a year considering we keep most of our players 3-4 years

BREAKING: Transfer DL Braden Fiske explains why Florida State was the choice

Short article, with few quotes, but this was his reason for choosing FSU:

"Florida State made a big impression from the start of this process, and when I left my visit from there I knew it was where I wanted to be," he said. "Coach Norvell and his staff really have something special brewing down there and I want to be a part of it."

Not even remotely surprised. I hope Freeman leaves for a place that deserves him, because ND doesn't.

That's my fear. That he moves on and ND becomes a stepping stone job.

Exactly it’s only a matter of time Freeman is gonna get tired of wasting all his efforts just for a team to swoop on with money and land a kid without even establishing a relationship

That just sounds like Norvell made a much better impression than Freeman. Big loss for Freeman.

FSU has a really good track record with DL transfers. I think it's as simple as that on this one.

9 win evaluation depends on context. They lost to every team worth its salt minus LSU. Also, I was being hyperbolic. He didn’t go to FSU because they have something “special” brewing there.

3-9 in 2020 to 9-3 this season. Top 20 recruiting classes in back to back years. They've done well with the portal.

They're not going to turn into Alabama, but the program Norvell is building has begun to turnaround.

Not dead but they are going into next year with no pass rusher
He’s right the doom and gloom is hilarious, ND isn’t dead. They’ll adapt eventually, it’s just not happening overnight like most of us had wanted.

Also your making the assumption that some of the players won’t develop into good defensive linemen that are good pass rushers. During the season if ND cant get to the QB then you have a point

The idea that they can't or dont earn significant money at ND is absurd. If guys want guaranteed or upfront...shrug.
