In general I agree completely. I’d rather we develop our own players, over time. You know what you have and it helps with cohesion and culture, which matters a lot in this sport. Personally I don’t think the teams that rely heavily on the portal are going to be able to sustain any success they might have.
That said, most years there are going to be three or four spots where a grad transfer is going to be pretty valuable for us. This year one of those is DL. And the fact that we seemingly can’t land a high-quality DL from just up the road b/c we’re being outbid by FSU and USC - if that’s indeed what’s going on here - is pretty troubling. That has to change, at least with grad transfers, or we’re going to seriously hamstring ourselves.
The only silver lining is that we can look at the success of our recruiting. If you can land a high BCR in every class, with each position having depth and quality, then, in theory, you won't need to look at the portal as often to fill your needs.
Of course, that's not a perfect theory. You will always miss on some recruits, some will transfer, and some will medically retire - and that's how holes develop on your roster/depth chart. Furthermore, some can argue that ND's level of success recruiting, even with Freeman instead of Kelly, will never amount to any true success at a championship level.
But recruiting high schoolers alone won't be enough.
