I have waited a couple of days since the announcement and still am at a loss for words.

The analogy I come up with is the hot girl already had a prom date, so we asked the ugly girl, and she turned us down. That is the way I feel. Didn't want him behind center but feel embarrassed he is leaving us behind.

Don't see too many FBS programs where they will guarantee what it sounds like he is requiring.

No disrespect to anyone with another opinion, but Drew leaving is an excellent sign of growth for this program. If he wasn’t willing to take on the role as backup, it’s understandable why he left. We need to be more aggressive about the QB position and prioritizing it as a position requiring our best, and if he saw the writing on the wall, it means we are writing a different story.

Had Buchner not gotten hurt, the same outcome was coming. Angeli and Minchey have higher ceilings. The old question for prospects - backup at high end power 5 school or start at group of 5?

The incoming transfer QB isn’t for Pyne as much as it is necessary from Buchner’s stunted development and lack of availability due to injury.

With the current portal system, not a lot of 4th year back up quarterbacks won’t transfer. If the cards play out the way a lot of us hope, Angeli is likely a future transfer too.

Your analogy is backwards. Notre Dame settled on the ugly girl for prom because the hot girl wasn't available. Now the hot girl and potentially another one are available so Notre Dame told the ugly girl she's in an open competition to be the prom date. Ugly girl knows she's got no chance against the hotties and decides to move on. Notre Dame is pleased with the hot girl options. Prom is going to be awesome!

For some reason I read all of your posts in Teddy KGBs voice from Rounders.

Agreed with one caveat: we need to be more aggressive with EVERY SINGLE position, not just QB.

Everyone “thanking” Drew Pyne… for what? Performing in his assigned role at an inconsistent level and then ditching his team before the bowl game because he was told he’d have to compete for the starting job next year?
Yeah I’m not in the wishing ill business, but my heart isn’t exactly moved for the guy.

Drew Pyne had the swag walk, but no chest to stick around.

In my opinion he is taking the easy way out, which is what college football has become- transferring.

Go to a MAC school or UConn would be my suggestion.

Leaving before the bowl game is a bitch move and whether he waited until after or not wouldn’t matter given his size lack of talent and eye test that he fails. Wish his performance could equal his bravado that he had to strut out his freshly shave bare white little jelly belly for the blue gold game which he can add to his film reel. I’m just thankful he didn’t throw 2X the number of ints this year. Will be fun watching his next few years not playing. At least he should get a free masters degree somewhere.

I love your optimism, but until I see the beautiful girls in the QB room at ND my only vision is from the prom scene in the movie Carrie.

Couldn’t agree more I’d bring in 2 WR transfers and even try and get some difference makers on defense

It's kind of funny that some of the people that were hardest on Drew and wanted him out are now the same people that are pissed he's leaving before the bowl game.
I’m not pissed. I’m happy. We know what we have in Pyne. It was time to see what Angeli can do and if Buch is healthy enough, he needs the game reps too.

The transfer portal really has changed a lot about the timing of players leaving. The players have more power but they are also pressed into a tough decision, especially in Drew's case. He was not guaranteed a starting spot for next season, and would have had to compete with Buchner and a transfer come spring practice. The portal gives him more options now, as opposed to waiting post spring where his options would have dwindled. He could transfer in June, but then again, he'll already be behind.

I can see how he quit on his team, but his teammates have all shown support. It would be more meaningful if the players felt the same as you.

Try to understand the entire situation instead of showing this old-school, vindictive attitude.

Pyne will go to another school where he feels like he can win a job.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he signs with an Ivy, has a few good years, and walks away with a valuable advanced degree. Seems smart enough to know that the path to his success is not the NFL. Best of luck whatever he decides

Lol if he was smart enough to know his limitations as a player he’d still be at ND

I didn't mention anyone by name. The guilty know who they are. It goes well beyond this board though, I've seen a lot of fans on social media that are in the same boat.

Yeah. Didn’t take it as a call out to anyone in particular. Just explaining my position is all.

"I asked Marcus Freeman what his conversation with Drew Pyne was like before Pyne entered the transfer portal.

Freeman said he was honest with Pyne and told him Notre Dame is looking to bring in a QB transfer. Pyne made the decision to leave."

MF: "I didn't want him to leave."

You need to be honest and make the tough calls if you want to get better.
More complete quote from Horka...

“We had a conversation this week, myself and Drew as well as many other players we have on our team, in terms of our intentions, my intentions, into certain positions looking for transfers,” Freeman said. “I’m always looking for ways to enhance our roster. I always want to be up front and honest, and I was with Drew. I told him that we would possibly look at taking a transfer quarterback.”

So it wasn’t anything so specifically about being qb1 or having to compete for the job in spring? Pyne not looking great if this is the case

I said it before and I’ll say it again-
1. Like everyone with a pair of eyes, Drew knew he was qb3 at best next year.

2. He had to go if he wants to play.

3. With all the qb transfers happening so quickly he had to go now. He’s not exactly going to be in high demand and he probably wants to find a landing spot.

My guess is he didn't want to go against 2/3 guys.

If he has graduated, why not go somewhere where he can get a great graduate degree and be QB1 for 3 years?

This is good leadership.
As I said previously in this thread, this was my greatest hope in this entire scenario, the MF/Rees were LEADING well. And it certainly appears so. Very excited about this.

Previous comments
What I am most hopeful in all of this is quality LEADERSHIP by our coaches. Hopefully there were honest conversations from Freeman/Rees with Pyne about expectations moving forward and then he choose to react how he has.

I know that in leadership roles at times it doesn't matter how well you handle a person/situation, some people will always react poorly. And then you know what their character was all along. Others will respond beautifully and you grow in your respect of them and look for ways to honor them for it.

Time will tell, but this looks like solid leadership from the coaches and a poor response from Drew that showed his character.

Does Ball State have good MBA ratings?
