See I'm not sure about that. Couldn't you just say Auburn's one recent national title is just a result of lucking into $Cam and not a result of anything institutional? Ole Miss even has more titles all time. And at Auburn, you'll always be second-fiddle in state.

Has Ole Miss not been second-fiddle to Mississippi State the last decade?

Auburn is perfect for an egomaniac like Kiffin. He gets to catch Saban on the way down and is arrogant enough to handle the unrealistic expectations.

I mean they played in the 2014 championship game. And Lane is the type of guy who can "luck into" a generational QB in the right situation.

All things being equal, I'm picking Auburn over Ole Miss. Facilities + huge NIL program (that's allegedly in the works) trumps anything Ole Miss can offer to Kiffin.

You “can” if you land a generational QB. Maybe. But you’re forever second fiddle to Bama in your own state, with annual games against a bunch of programs with more firepower, and you walk into one of the worst booster situations in college football.

I’d agree straight-up Auburn is a better job than Ole Miss, but only marginally. And if Kiffin bides his time another year or two he could actually do significantly better. Auburn is probably a well-paid dead end.
College football is cyclical. How much longer will Auburn be "second fiddle" to Bama with Saban's current team showing signs of slowing down and when he'll be 72 next season?

In terms of what might be there in a year or two, are we talking the Crimson Tide? From everything I've heard, Kiffin wants no part of that circus and the relationship with Saban turned pretty sour after LK left.

Fair enough. I guess it just seems like a marginal upgrade to me that might hamstring Lane's ability to eventually move to one of the tippy top jobs in CFB - which I guess I'd call USC, BAMA, LSU...and maybe ND, Oklahoma, and Texas.

When was the last time Auburn wasn’t second fiddle to Bama for more than a random/one-off year or two?

Tommy Tuberville, Gene Chizik and Gus Malzahn won at Auburn. Some of y’all are way too down on Auburn. They’ve been a general mainstay for most of the last 40 years. They are a hair behind LSU as a job. A definitive step up from Ole Miss. Life with Saban has been tough on them. Saban is leaving soon, don’t think that’s not part of the pitch for a second.

That’s true of everyone in the SEC West, including Ole Miss. Difference is Ole Miss doesn’t have the “random years”.

Auburn is a very good job. Much more history, lore and support than Ole Miss.

I dunno. No one else has to share the damn state. LSU can go toe-to-toe. A&M has that oil money. Texas and Oklahoma are coming. Auburn is, yes, a step ahead of Ole Miss, but only a step. They aren't Georgia or Florida or even quite Tennessee either.

Tennessee’s slogan is Feels like ‘98 for a reason.

Alabama HS football > Mississippi HS football and Auburn is less than 2 hours from Atlanta. Better to share a hotbed then not have one at all.

Their last claimed title was 1962 and they haven't won conference since 1963. Auburn got their most recent NC in 2010 when color television existed. 2004 and 1993 they were unbeaten but were not number one (circumstances were very different in each scenario).

Auburn has six SEC West Championships. Ole Miss has zero.

Auburn is a better job for a variety of reasons.

Stoops is 6-5 after starting off 4-0. He's on a two game losing streak which includes a loss to Vanderbilt.

Not one of his better coaching jobs at UK. It results in a raise.

You can go back before Tuberville to Terry Bowden too. 47-17-1.

Pat Dye before him was 99-39-4 and resigned because of the rule violations. Bowden took a team on probation and went 11-0 his first season.

Ultimately Harsin was a bad fit and they didn't give him a chance. I think he can still coach if he lands out west somewhere. Who in the current SEC can say they're a better job than Auburn? Alabama, UGA, LSU, Florida and Tennessee.

Not Ole Miss.

Multiple Ole Miss sites heavily reporting Lane told the team he is staying tonight

Ole Miss Rivals site also are reporting Freeze will be the next Auburn Coach - interesting they would have that info

I learned from BK to LSU not to believe anything this time of year until the ink is dried. Even if it makes sense or no sense at all. I’d rather see Lane go to College Station and maintain that purse he gripes about.
