Then we should toss quick little passes over their heads to our running backs while they do it. Let Tyree have a game.
Agree, why was this too hard to figure out vs Navy? Quick hitter or swing and GO. Backyard FB basics.

And you agree or disagree?
I think had they run screen passes every other down in the second half against Navy it could not have yielded worse results than what we saw.

It's mid November and we're still talking about Tommy running more screen passes. I'm frankly more shocked they manhandled Clemson running the ball but could to nothing on the ground against Navy. That's college football and certainly 2022 Notre Dame purely encapsulated.

Sure, I agree. Run screens until Lou Holtz's lisp no longer exists. Whatever it takes.

That’s what I can’t wrap my mind around. Going into the Clemson game, IIRC; the Tigers had a higher rated rush defense (#4 in the nation, maybe?). Going into Navy, we saw they had a highly rated rush defense as well but we assumed their level of competition & the fact they were still rated lower than Clemson, meant ND should be able to do decent running the ball. Instead, they were totally stonewalled for four quarters. Those undersized, never-say-die, zero star Middies did what those 4/5-star, future NFL draft picks for Clemson couldn’t do.

I’d bet ND covers SC before I‘d bet ND cover BC.

I think it's pretty simple IMO. Clemson trusted their highly decorated d-line to stop us without sending extra help. And we did that. But Navy just started stacking 8 or 9 guys in the box and coming full force, which just creates the problem of having too many guys rushing without enough dudes to block them. It could have been easily fixed with quick throws to dudes in one on one coverage and having our athletes beat dudes for big gains. But Pyne kept eating the ball and getting sacked looking for the big play downfield. Part of the failure is with Rees and the other is with Pyne for not realizing he needs to get the ball out quickly.

After the second or third sack it becomes on Rees. Can't keep making the same mistake, have to adjust.

Yes…pretty simple in regards to the 2nd half.

I’m speaking specifically to the first half when Pyne was having one of the most efficient halves of his career & accounted for 5 TDs. Even w/ the pass opening up, ND couldn’t run the ball.

This was incredibly frustrating to watch on Saturday. It seems so simple yet I haven't heard a legitimate explanation from Pyne, Rees or anyone else as to why we couldn't try to use a screen or a swing pass to the RBs to beat the pressure. Instead they just kept rushing 8 and we couldn't stop it.

If there's a reason a screen wouldn't have provided any sort of relief it's beyond me.

Tim O'Malley says he is going to ask Rees this very question tonight.

Sounds like Phil may be ready to go but after defending him as their starter, Jeff Hafley seemed noncommittal after Morehead's big game in Raleigh.

Looks like the fans want Moorehead.

If I'm Hafley then I would be concerned that Phil is going to try to win the game by himself with hero ball and is a risk to completely melt down.

i feel like we had the RB on swings and quick shit to the flats almost every play and Pyne just absolutely ignored.
If that's the case, I agree with @IRISHDODGER that Rees needs to simpilify things for Pyne and make him get out of his own way after the 2nd or third failed drive, and call a designed play with only one or two route options. If it's a RB screen, he won't have anywhere else to go.

I've learned many years ago to always assume the worst for Senior Day; don't ever hope for good weather and you won't be disappointed!

That's fantastic football weather though.

And all of the board should know that OL is as much as about experience as a unit as anything. Show me one positive report out of camp or practice on Spindler. Not to say he & the others won’t do well next year…I expect them to…but I also know fans think it’s as easy as plug & play & will assume all ND needs is a functional QB which is far from the truth.
Was lugg getting positive reports?

IrishIllustrated pod needs to quit taking the question, “How many snaps do you think Angeli will get in the BC game?”

Kiss of death all season.

If there's high winds, that works out favorably for ND.

BC has one of the worst OL's in the country, while also being particularly weak in run defense.

Run some quick passes to the edge, give them a taste of Tyree, and then bash them with Diggs and Estime and ND should win this.

The toughest opponent for ND on saturday is going to be ND.

didn't you watch the Navy game? We don't run quick passes. 5-7 step drops ONLY, especially against cover 0 because fuck it

If someone wants 2 tix (section 121) and parking pass, let me know. Early Christmas present. Take a kid to the game opportunity. You'll need the app for ticket transfer.

Hey Tex if no one else takes you up on these, I’m gonna make a decision Friday night whether to make the trip out Saturday morning, I can let you know then!

OK, better for me to handle this by tomorrow since I'll be travelling up from Big D.
