Barring a change, after reading that Chryst article I’d say Nebraska is a better job than Wisconsin currently. Wisconsin isn’t in the 21st century in recruiting. They have the money, any outside HC hire I’d have to get a lot of assurances to take that job. Probably partly why they’ll go Leonhard, he’s the cheap route.

If I'm the AD making the hire, I'd want assurances that my HC and his staff would be getting off their ass to recruit because the program was humming along for decades until this staff now came in and sat around doing nothing. I'm a hard pass on Leonhard if he was the DC of a staff that had a linebacker visiting campus and no one spoke to the kid. Handing him off the job just because he's an alum is a huge mistake. Those assistant coaches had to have been complicit with the lack of recruiting.

Wisconsin went 8 months without a recruiting department last year because Michigan state hired the entire Badgers recruiting department. They spend less than every other Power 5 program in recruiting, and less than UConn. Nebraska might not be the better program in the recent past, but they absolutely have committed more resources to helping their coach than Sconny has.

Even with that being said, Dale, I would not touch the Nebraska job either. Especially if I'm Rhule and I'm owed $40M. He could hang out and wait for something else.

Sounds like maybe time caught up to Wisconsin. I have always been impressed with how they've stuck to this identity going back to Alvarez and have done so without a lot of glitzy recruiting fanfare. Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue have all become a bit more respectable in recent years and that has to hurt Wisconsin. They can't go stealth with recruiting like they have in the past. I do feel that someone like Rhule could get those assurances from the admin and get things going again as he did at Temple and Baylor within the current structure of NIL and the portal.

I’ve always looked at PSU as getting by w/ smoke & mirrors. This weekend should show us more but my recollection is that PSU shrivels in the big moment under Franklin. That said, a lot could happen between now & 2031.

Hmm. Get fired in the NFL and go straight back to work gameplanning schemes for the Syracuse game? Or take a six-week vacation while being courted for all the good head coaching jobs in college football. Wonder which I'd choose?

His college record speaks for itself. Back to back 10 win seasons at Temple and a Sugar Bowl appearance in Year 3 at Baylor after a pretty bad scandal.

My guess is the athletic directors will come to him, if they haven't been already, and the optics of him taking analyst work would not be something he needs to land a job next season if he wants one.

True but recent success is less important than a demonstrated willingness to commit resources and overall prestige of the program. Historically, Nebraska is better and will commit resources. That's far better than a promise to pay at wiscy. I think Rhule should avoid both jobs, especially if he believes TnM will be open soon. They have everything lined up to win and win big if they can make the right hire.

Matt Rhule shouldn't touch Auburn with a ten foot pole.

We'll see how the season plays out of course, but given the buyouts involved at places like A&M and Penn State, the newness of hires at places like Oklahoma and LSU and (of course) Notre Dame, and the stability at Bama/Georgia/OSU/Clemson I'd be curious what jobs open that will be better than the ones that are open already. Feels like it may be a slower cycle at the top of the market than last year.

Have to wonder what his next move is. He crashed out of a high profile job and it was his second SEC gig to boot. He has the luxury of being very selective if he wants with regards to college jobs. You'd think someone would take a shot at him again.

I still wonder what his NFL ambition is, if any. Would he take an NFL OC gig or would he want an HC job in The League. Maybe neither?

I'd be inclined to leave him be, but that's just me.
