Bye week's over. The Catholic folk travel to Sin City to take on the BYU Cougars.
There is other decent football in store, as well. Thursday and Friday are meh, but Saturday sees some decent and/or intriguing matchups in each time slot.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 5
- Both of these teams might be decent... SMU has lost two one-score games to P5 opponents, while UCF is 3-1, but has a perplexing loss to Louisville. This should at least be an entertaining game, and our first Wednesday night game of the year.
FRIDAY, OCT. 7
- I really thought Rutgers was improving... but they're a home dog to Nebraska, who doesn't have a head coach. Seems like a strange line, so we'll see what happens!
- AAC Football is very meh this year, but this has potential to be a fun matchup anyway.
- FS1 double-header! If you fall asleep during Nebraska/Rutgers, this will be the weird game you wake up to around 12am when it's time to move from the couch to the bedroom.
- Scout UNLV, who is 4-1! Supposed to be a cupcake down the line on ND's schedule, they've got four wins with impressive offensive output, and a close loss to Cal. This will be a decent test at the start of a tough stretch that goes SJSU/Air Force/ND.
SATURDAY, OCT. 8 - EARLY
- scUM has the cushiest goshdarn schedule. Just a slow buildup to competent opponents. Maryland was at home, now they go on the road... but to underwhelming IU.
- Is BK's LSU squad ahead of schedule??? They start slow (sounds familiar), but they have a mobile, veteran QB to bail them out and sneak out wins (also familiar). Tennessee is a huge test, though.
- Look at the Big XII getting wild with some fresh blood in the top 25! TCU and Kansas are both surprises early in the season, and this game could be a shootout.
- Cowbells in the top 25 after a win over Texas A&M... this could be one of those "The SEC Feeds on Itself" games where Arkansas turns it back on and gets a win.
- The Red River Rivalry is suddenly underwhelming with Texas not quite being back, and Oklahoma's defense deciding to take a few weeks off.
SATURDAY, OCT. 8 - AFTERNOON
- Go Bearcats
- Auburn shit the bed last week... but so did UGA. This could be Dawgs by 100. HOWEVER... UGA/Auburn has a tendency to get weird, so stay alert!
- A Pac-12 heavyweight clash in an afternoon time slot! Utah came into the season with high hopes, and UCLA has come from out of nowhere to start 5-0. This could be a really good game, and it's cool to see UCLA getting back to national relevance simply as a changeup from the usual suspects.
- Sparty. Buckeyes. East Lansing. If there's rain in the forecast, place your bets on Sparty right now. (If not, Buckeyes by a bunch.)
- Joey Freshwater takes a trip to Tennessee to visit our old friend Clark Lea. Can Vandy push for an upset while Ole Miss fights a big-game hangover? Probably not! But we'll see.
- Root for the Tar Heels, both because Miami is evil, and because it helps ND's transitive relevance in the polls.
SATURDAY, OCT. 8 - LATE
- Go Irish. Beat Mormons. Similar defensive gameplan to stopping UNC. Similar offensive gameplan, too. Execute. Win.
- #Pray4PhillyJ. He might literally die at the hands of Clemson's defensive front.
- Trojans get another week of being on Upset Alert. Go Cougs.
- Wildcats need to rebound after a heartbreaker against Ole Miss, where they turned the ball over THREE TIMES with chances to tie/win.
- Kansas State and Adrian Martinez are heating up on offense. Iowa State is good for one WTF win every season... is this the one?
- #Pray4Jimbo. Nick Saban might try to score 100 points, whether Bryce Young is in the lineup or not.
- FSU is on a rollercoaster this season, and could get another high point here. I've got the Wolfpack on upset alert after a lackluster showing against Clemson inspired no confidence in their offense against a defense with a pulse.
SATURDAY, OCT. 8 - NIGHT CAP
- We are once again blessed with a Smurf Turf night cap game. It should also be entertaining, as Boise State rallied last week against SDSU and looked surprisingly competent after firing some people and letting Bachmeier hit the transfer portal.
- Meh. It's on TV at night.
- Endurance Test. Scout the Cardinal.
