Welcome back for another edition of the "weekly talk shit about other teams and compare every.single.thing we see to ND, for better or worse" thread.
After a week one marathon that saw games played over 5 straight days, we're back to a normal-ish schedule for week two. There aren't a bunch of great games, but there ARE some entertaining matchups for various reasons.
There are no Thursday games thanks to the return of the NFL, so we start with Friday:
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9th
- Louisville can NIL their way to all the recruits they want, but they are not good right now (unless Syracuse is just that good this year, after whooping the Cards last week)... but this should still be an entertaining Friday game, with potential to get weird.
- Boise State in a night cap game is always good, though we are sad it isn't on the Smurf Turf
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th - EARLY
- Bama with a rare non-conference road game!!!!1one!! They will demolish Texas, and maybe ruin Quinn Ewers before he's even had a chance to get going.
- Arkansas with a sneaky-tough matchup after having been in a car crash with Cincinnati last week. Battle of the QB's with KJ Jefferson taking on Spencer's Rattler's Gamecocks, who looked competent against Georgia State last week.
- Mike Elko's boys looked great last week in a 30-0 shutout of Temple, while Northwestern got the week off to shake off the international jet lag. Clash of hard-nosed teams that like to play solid defense... good test for Elko, and an appropriate measuring stick after the Temple game.
- You could watch Ohio @ Penn State, or even Missouri @ Kansas State... but why do that when you can watch Clark Lea's guys, who ACTUALLY HAVE A GOOD QB, take on Wake Forest, who are missing their QB.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th - AFTERNOON
- Go Irish, beat Marshall. Establish the run, get Buchner confident, keep rotating the young DB's on defense. Get back on track after a tough week one.
- App State looking for revenge on any Power 5 opponent they can get their hands on after absolutely blowing it last week against UNC (after UNC absolutely tried to blow it). Jimbo and the Aggies as the sacrificial lamb would be wonderful.
- I don't think Pitt is that good, so totally appropriate that a pretty good Tennessee squad will have a chance to blow them out and get a bunch of credit for a top-20 win that isn't really that impressive, yet another feather in the SEC's cap for the world wide leader to talk about all year.
- Washington State travels east to Camp Randall, where they will try to make the afternoon window nice and strange in a matchup against Wisconsin. Go Cougs?
- Go Bearcats.
- Interesting in-state matchup, as Houston is the trendy pick for this year's Group-of-5 NY6 team. Texas Tech is recruiting well, but can their new staff back it up on the field?
- El Assico. You are legally obligated to watch at least 15 minutes of this game, which will be absolutely terrible and insultingly boring.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th - LATE
- The crown jewel of the day: The Gators, after jumping from unranked to 12th following an upset of Utah, host the Wildcats, who have a pretty good QB. But so does Florida. This game will either be entertaining, or will validate Florida as 'Already Legit' under Billy Napier if they can outpace the Wildcats from the start.
- Scout two future opponents. Perfect spot for David Shaw's troops to have their Annual "Outstanding Game Against a Ranked Opponent"
- Really not excited about Ok State/ASU, but it's something that's on TV.
- scUM gives JJ McCarthy the nod in this one... if he looks even halfway decent, McNamara will have lost his job.
- Philly J. gets a shot against VT, who lost to ODU last week. But his OL is really bad. He's going to get pummeled by any front 7 with a pulse, until proven otherwise.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th - NIGHT CAP
- Too many decent late games (though no truly GREAT ones), so we get a separate 10pm-and-later category this week.
- Baylor hits the road and visits BYU at the foot of the mountains... good test for both squads, and a chance to scout BYU against a legit opponent.
- Oregon State's Chance Nolan vs Fresno State's Jake Haener might be the best QB matchup of the year. Hammer the over, whatever it is.
- Strictly an endurance test here (short of Hawaii's 11:59PM kickoffs, but there isn't one this week). The Cow Bells travel west to visit the Wildcats. If you like to sleep to the light of the TV, this is it for the weekend.
