So listening to the press conference the game plan was to slow play the offense. After watching the game that what they came up with. And that’s what Freeman wanted. So they self admitted to themselves that the offense wasn’t good enough.
I firmly believe that this has been part of the issue most of the times we compete against these top teams over the past 5-10 years.

With how electric some of these offenses can be (OSU, Clemson of years past, etc), it makes sense to game manage, try to control time of possession, and limit their potential. But we consistently overcommit to this and become too predictable.

No shit? Anybody that thought we it would be a solid gameplan to lineup and try to go toe to toe offensively with OSU is either on crack or needs their head examined. I view it positively that they have a self awareness of where the teams strengths and weaknesses are and game planned to it. Its called good coaching. Our offensive talent is limited and inexperienced, anybody expecting otherwise at this point in time is kidding themselves. Our gameplan gave us the best chance to win…fact.

One of the key plays of the game. Notre Dame up 10-7 with 12 minutes to go in the 3rd. Notre Dame has 3rd and 11 at the OSU 36. They had Mayer and Styles stacked to the left and Thomas and Lenzy wide right and Buchner tried to force the ball in to Lenzy. If he looks left, the play was designed perfectly and Styles had trailed Mayer up the seam then slanted in and broke open. If Buch looks that way and hits him in stride it is minimally a first down if not a 20+ yard gain that almost guarantees more points and potentially changes the trajectory of the 2nd half.

Rewatching the game, the playcalling wasn’t wide open, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as it appeared on first watch. There were plays to be had but players didnt execute. Estime missed the hole a couple times and turned what could be have 5-7 yard gains on early downs into stuffs too. Buchner when flushed had a few one on ones down the sideline where he just needs to just put the ball up and trust his guys to make a play on 3rd down from the midfield area.
Maybe your guy makes a play, maybe draws a PI or worst case it gets picked and OSU is backed up around their own 20 anyhow.

This team will get better as the game slows down for them some and they see these missed opportunities better.

The fact that Bauman, Mayer or Estime could slow this DE down is insane. They literally almost had TB decapitated.

We've gotta find Styles like this more often to keep the defense honest. The other receivers will have to step up too, and in a hurry. Otherwise we'll continue to see aggressive front 7s.

Looks like that is on Bauman. That's a tough block to begin with and the DE didn't bite on the fake at all.

I've read a lot of articles complementing Buchner on his composure and I've come around to seeing the glass half-full on his game.

But but but I was told the coaching staff was so scared of TB throwing a pick six that it made sense to forfeit a 1st and 25.
The first down play got seven yards. The second down play got 0 yards. I think they forfeited the 3rd and 18.

That was the very first play of the game  2nd half was a different story, we had no passing game and poor protection. 2 for 9 and Buchner was getting hit often after throws. One reception to Mayer, and the crazy catch by Lenzy, the only one he had all game. This play was so busted it's actually amazing it succeeded.

The game after the 1st 1/3 of the game was pretty boring to be fair. Pitt / WVU and Utah / UF were much better games to watch.

Anybody listen to the ISD post game show for Ohio State? My goodness Mike Frank can't stop talking about benching almost the entire O and D lines.

Yes, listened yesterday. Because he’s more like us fans than true reporters/analysts like Prister, OMalley, Sampson, Jamie, Brice, etc.

I get that Hiestand has a history of favoring experience over all else but Frank couldn’t possibly have seen enough to unequivocally say that Spindler should be starting (for example). I get frustrated watching Lugg & Correll too but let’s see what adding Patterson back does to their cohesion. I’m cautiously optimistic e.

I listened to II as well and they addressed same issue but w/ opposite opinion. They are on record as having Spindler being rated as one of the best, if not the best; player in his class. They also recognize that he’s just not ready based on what they’ve seen and heard from staff.

Later in the pod, Frank got caught having it both ways. He complains about the negativity on the message boards post game and then later complains about how too many fans are content w/ “keeping it close” or “not getting blown out” by the elite tier 1 teams. Which is it Mike?!?!?

I coach HS baseball and I promise you that college football coaches know infinitely more about their roster than we do. We only see small three hour windows into a team. To me it's a lazy take to immediately go with "bench x for y."

Exactly. That’s why I compared Frank to most fans...that’s what fans typically say.

Yeah, and I agree with him and Jamie on that wholeheartedly.

Lugg and Correll were THAT bad. It wasn't just them getting physically worked, but they were the two players missing the most assignments up front. Just flat out whiffing on blocking assignments left and right and not even chipping defenders, but letting them come through unimpeded to destroy Buchner or the backs. Those are the two most experienced linemen, and they're responsible for a majority of the miscues up front.

Mike and Jamie were pretty complimentary to most of the DL, minus Jayson and Foskey. And yeah, they deserved EVERY BIT of criticism they got after that game. Those two are the guys ND has to rely on to be disruptive and make plays in these critical games and they were virtually non-existent.

I don't recall seeing Foskey or Jayson make a single play in that game. Not one. It's especially bad when you have Jayson going on record saying he thinks they're the "baddest motherf*ckers on the block" and then goes out and has probably the worst game of his career.

It comes down to accountability. Those 4 guys are supposed to be leaders of their respective positions and their respective sides of the ball. Foskey is a projected first rounder, Jayson is a 5th year and the voice of the DL, and they both let their team down. Lugg and Correll are both veterans with the most experience on the line and they were the ones making most of the mental errors.

That's just inexcusable and unacceptable for guys that are suppose to be setting the standard and helping hold the younger players accountable.

Yeah, that take threw me for a serious loop.

Somebody mentioned how Mike began PH by stating that he needed to stick around until like 1 in the morning to police the boards, yet he then goes on and says the fans are complacent? If the fans are complacent, why the hell do you need to stick around and keep your site's board from going into a complete meltdown?

People Came to watch us get embarrassed and saw what’s going to be one of the top defenses in college football for the Irish.

And that is exactly why The B1G and SEC would love for ND to join their conference. Nobody draws better, especially in marquee games.

And it is why the SEC will be hesitant to insist ND be a part of a conference to be considered for the CFP b/c they know if ND is backed into a corner & forced to join a conference, it will be the B1G. That hurts the SEC (by helping the B1G) more than ND remaining Independent.

Actually, ND is the 4th most watched program - behind OSU and Alabama. I realize that many - on here - like for ND to take credit for Saturday's ND-OSU monster, regular season ratings, but OSU also had something to do with it.

I mean it's both lol. 2 schools with giant fanbases playing each other = big viewership.

In related news, @Irish#1, studies show that you are not in fact the "World's Best Dad," so please dispose of that coffee mug you received for Father's Dad and publish a formal retraction immediately.
