Clemson’s defense is better. Clemson will score more than 10 points.

I bet 90% of the Big Ten will score more than 10 points on Ohio State this year.
Clemson game could easily be like 14-13.

I was superbly impressed by how prepared and discipline this team was under a first year coach. We had no turnovers, and very few penalties in the most hostile environment we will see all season in the first game of the year. Freeman absolutely belonged on the field with Day. Play like that all year, even with a poor offense, and we go 10-2 or 9-3.

This guy says it a lot better than me

If we’d opened up last night then our young stud would have thrown a few pick sixes. Killed his confidence

Let’s take the lump, on the road, vs #2 in the land. Regroup, then come back better.

It’s not Tommy’s fault (I don’t think) that Tyler has no one to throw to.
I disagree - he is the Offensive Co-ordinator. Why have Salerno on the field where is Merriweather, Styles and Linzey to get more targets?

Also, all the running and QB Option when we are 3rd and 20?? That is awful, awful play calling.

No screens? Basic tactics would have been nice to see.

You see its not BK - its Tommy. Tommy is the issue.

Lots of Homers thought we would be much better by BK leaving.... reality is that we are no better at the outset with Freeman. He will need 3 years to make us a legit Top 3 team capable of winning big games. One step will be to get an experienced Offensive Coordinator. I pray Tommy leaves.

I just told you why. They’re not open. Create space for fuck sake.

It might be a combo, but I’m gonna hold my opinion until the dude gets something to work with.

Irish2155 -

1. No screens (1 to Mayer)
2. One Jet Sweep
3. OSU loads the box and Rees does nothing to adjust.
4. Boy wonder has no cloths on for those of us who can see the obvious. Atrocious play calling. Even Herbstreit was commenting on it.

What a surprise - the shitty offense is not really a BK issue after all.

And this wins the game last night? I doubt it.

Your solution is to mask holes, I think we’re done with that approach. It’s time to fix them.

Idiotic take. "No trust in his [first-time starter at] quarterback" on the road against #2 OSU at night? Had he done what you suggested and Buchner threw a couple picks, you'd be roasting him for expecting too much of the kid and not committing to the run.

We game planned around our OL being able to control the LOS. That's one of the few areas we recruit better than OSU, and their front-seven was inconsistent last year. It wasn't just a good plan, it was the only game plan that gave us a decent chance at winning. With Patterson out, our IOL sucked, and OSU got pressure up the middle all night. That we couldn't reliably move the ball in 12 and 13 personnel is an indictment of our OL.

Guys like Lugg simply shouldn't be playing with the way we recruit the position. But that's not on Tommy.
Yes, it's an indictment. And it happens every single time we play a stout d line.

Either we don't developed stout, cohesive o-lines, our s&c is lacking or our players are soft. There has to be a reason why they get whipped every time.

Wow you really are protecting Tommy Rees! This or offensive coordinator is awful where was any place to Meriwether? Why is Salerno the focus of the receiving core? No screens? Running up the middle three times in the middle of the field at the end of the game? The playcalling was awful
Go home, you're drunk.

When they had the offensive pass interference penalty and it went to 1st and 25 we weren't going to convert that. Our WRs were nonexistent all game and they bottled Mayer up pretty good 2nd half. Rather than put Buchner in a poor position and cause a turnover they played for the next possession and were safe with the football. It was the only move to play.

It really is. BK was lax in recruiting. He let Del fumble it away with the WRs, and there was a year or two there that the OL was lacking and that led to the problems we saw last year. Freeman and Rees are bringing in the recruits, but they're young. Last year's freshmen class has talent, but they're all still young. By '23 and '24 this offense will be rolling, and I would expect we'll get much better as this season goes on too.

You don't need to convert it to get into FG range when you're already inside the 50. Instead Rees basically forfeited the possession with 3 of the most uninspired runs I've ever seen. Pure chicken shit play calling.

Right, and if Buchner throws a pick 6 there the game is over. A FG might have helped, but we were on our own 44 after the penalty. That means we would have nearly needed to convert that 1st and 25 anyway JUST to get to the 35 yard line to setup a 45 yard FG. It was a conservative move, but again, we were only down by 4 there. Running the ball was the smart move given the 1st and 25 with a young QB against a stifling defense. We had to hope the defense held again and we made the most of the next possession.

If we're that petrified of Buchner throwing a pick 6 he shouldn't have been in the game. There's no reason you can't throw 10 yard passes in that situation.

Yeah, I absolutely cannot get behind the sequence of runs on 1st and 25. You can’t tell me the probability of a pick six was high enough to the point where we should effectively just run ourselves into a punt on 1st and 25 with the game still very much on the line, and where a first down puts us in FG range.

“When it went to 1st and 25 we were never going to convert that” - yeah, not with that attitude. At least make an attempt.

2nd Half Buchner was 2 for 9 with one reception to Mayer and the miraculous catch by Lenzy. We had no real passing game to speak of, and Buchner was getting hit as he released the ball many times. The protection was lacking, and our receivers weren't getting open quickly enough even if they could have bought him an extra second or two. We weren't throwing our way out of that (Well, maybe a screen would have been nice, maybe Tyler has issues on those touch passes), and if you try to force the ball it could have been disastrous.

ND definitely did the smart thing on that possession. Our punter had been putting the ball inside the ten yard line all night and our defense was still playing really well up to that point. Pin them deep in their own territory, get a three and out, and receive the ball in good territory to go for the winning drive. If that happens the post game discussion is way different. Unfortunately tOSU put together their best drive of the night after that series and now Tommy is an idiot...

What OC is going to perform well with this OL and a struggling & thin WR group? Buchner may have accuracy issues too. We're young on offense and lacking talent in spots. That's a recipe for disaster when you're facing a very good defensive coordinator who has five 5 stars and twenty-six 4 stars on defense to work with.
Making excuses for BK's OC. His scheming against OSU was weak and awful.

No Screens, No Jet Sweeps, No passing to Slot Receivers. Those schemes don't involve putting much faith in the QB. But how about the first play of the game to Styles?? Instead lets do the running game with OSU having 8 or 9 in the box. Makes sense. Its almost like BK told Rees to do that.....

Yes that is why you do screens. And Rees didn't call for them. Ugh.

Having Golden with head coaching experience and Freeman with DC experience, do either get to provide commentary to Rees about how to loosen a defense up? I know Tommy "knows" but something doesn't feel right. Two second halves in a row have been dreadful.

I like Freeman and want him to succeed but his press conference seems corny. He tries to be to slick. He also doesn’t seem very organized. He was looking for a stat and couldn’t find it in his notes. The team sounds like they were not prepared for the temps since they had cramping issues so hydration was clearly an issue.

He is a likable guy with out trying to be cute. It was just his second press conference so he gets a little bit of a pass but this is where the inexperience kicks in.

We had fewer injuries than them and we looked very well conditioned and disciplined. He might not be a statistics guru like Kelly because he is a players coach focused on winning. We all have our strengths

We were very well prepared. All night long. That is something you cannot deny or criticize. The fact we had a game plan to stop OSU and basically execute it to a T says we were very prepared.

We are clearly limited

I only question the preparation as in keeping the guys hydrated.

Do you wver have ANYTHING positive? Seriously you’re fucking criticizing the guys press conference for being corny and unorganized because he didnt have a stat handy to be able to appease the freaking media room after losing what was probably a really tough loss.

Trying to be slick? The fact that you have to try so hard to find something to be critical of him says a lot of a guy coaching his 2nd career game as a HC, when one is the fiesta bowl and the next is on the road at #2 Ohio state.

Seriously who gives a flying fuck if he can pull off a “press conference” up to your standards if he can coach and recruit, two things not really in question at the moment.

Some of you are unbearable.

Apparently you read what you want. Because I have said it multiple times in numerous topics that if Kelly was coaching this game was a blow out. That is because Freeman had these guys prepared for the environment and the game.

We have had good defenses the past few years and we are probably gonna see the best one yet. The secondary is the best we have seen in years and it’s probably only gonna get better.

Some results but most of the staff seems to be recruiting it’s tail off and hopefully we will continue to see huge additional players to the team.

Estime is probably going to be the next very good running back in the history of ND.

Although TB didn’t have a great game he didn’t look like a deer in head lights either. He made a bad ass throw to Lenzy which he didn’t catch. But to have the balls to throw that says TB ain’t scared.
