Premise#1 Austin needs development, technique,routes, hands. Premise#2 Peterson can see his value and arrange the two years on taxi. Peterson is safe and Khan will give him a long leash, unlike anuses like Snyder. Premise 3 at the end of two years Trevor is spinning the ball to Kevin. lot of ifs? Hell ya but the best clear chance.

I know it was his first year, but the jury is still out if Lawrence will be a great NFL prospect. He tied Stafford for most picks thrown this year, although Stafford threw almost 4x as many TDs. Only a few starters had a worse QBR than Lawrence, namely Mayfield, Fields, Darnold, and Zach Wilson. The Jags aren't exactly known for lots of continuity, it's not a place where talent goes to flourish. It's like Cleveland from three years ago...well...pretty much Cleveland anytime in the last 20 years.

You are correct on the facts but I have shoved All In on Lawrence. If he doesn't excel just pass me the hemlock!! Check you doctor on the Brownies. Have you contracted Spugeon Wynn syndrome?

I thought maybe Coan held him back some also, but looking at Coan's stats, they are much better on paper than it seemed watching this past season. 65.5% completions, 3150 yards passing, 25tds, 7 ints. At this point, all I remember seems to be him being sacked. Anyway, I think KA has some serious upside, and I wish he would've came back one more year. Being undrafted, maybe he thinks the same now, who knows.

I disagree. You may be slightly more likely to play on a bad team as an UDFA, but if it's a bad team you'll be unlikely to get the ball often because your QB will be running for his life, or he can't read defenses, or there won't be any holes for you to run through. If you're on a good team you may be just an injury away from seeing the field in some cases and you could be setup to standout. That's basically what happened to Jonas Gray when he wound up with the Patriots and broke their franchise record by scoring 4 TDs in one game...only to break team rules the following week and then fall off the face of the Earth. Not a great example, a better one would probably be Ryan Grant who parlayed his UDFA status to become a starter after Wynn was injured. He was a staple for Green Bay for a few years and got a Super Bowl ring with them. Picked up a nice contract out of it too.

Our difference may be more on whether or not Kevin Austin is game ready.

I think not.
Ryan Grant and Jonas Gray were both game ready.

It seems that Austin's choices are
get cut early
get developed for one or two years.

He's always had serious upside, but it wasn't until that latter half of last season that we saw glimpses of what could be. To me, you look at the kids entire body of work while in school. Do you see consistent growth and improvement or not. KA never showed that. It won't take long to know if the light came on.

Not sure I can remember a worse decision by a Notre Dame player to come out early. Austin obviously would've benefitted from another year in school. So talented, so much opportunity for him to shine next season, and yet...
That said, reading between the lines of various stories about his decision it appeared coming back was never in the cards. Not sure if that was the coaching, or he was just done "playing school," or what. But he seemed to have his mind made up. I believe he graduated, at least. So there's that.

I've seen it speculated that it was 'NFL Draft vs Grad Transfer' rather than 'Draft vs Return to ND'

KA returning to ND was never going to happen, whether he made the [correct] decision to hold off on the league for a year or not.

folks on both II and ISD podcasts reckon KA would have been better served playing a final year of CFB away from ND and i kind of agree with that

Even if it wasn't at ND, him leaving early for the draft was still a mistake.

He simply was not ready for the league and needed to fix a lot of things, namely him getting separation and unjamming himself at the LOS. He may have been a senior, but his game hadn't been able to develop, due to being unavailable and not really able to play until his senior year.

I agree he isn't good enough for the NFL. Not sure that he ever will be, but now he doesn't need to go to class.

By stating that he doesn’t need to go to class, you are implying that that was an issue for him. I responded that it was not an issue and I stated why. Or maybe my inference was off?

I dunno. Personally I was glad he decided to try the Draft, even with the depth issues at WR. I didn't see him getting better, although a new coach may or may not have helped. Some guys just don't get that you need more than speed and raw talent, you gotta work on the little things like route running, getting separation, blocking, timing, consistency with your catches, etc. As far as the WR group, I didn't see them taking the next step with Austin eating up a bunch of starting reps. Sucks that we're short a few bodies, but I didn't see Austin changing his routine and so I feel better about younger guys getting more experience.
