Honestly, at this point, we are better off waiting till someone comes up in the portal in a couple of years. Try to flip a couple of the kids we targeted and missed. But let's stop going down the pole farther and farther just to get a warm body.

No that makes no sense. If you need the portal next year or two, you do that regardless. The portal isn’t going to be used to fill QB depth, anyone going that route will be looking for a place to start. Best case scenario Buchner is a stud, and Carr is his heir apparent, we need depth in case of an injury.

Is Steve Angeli not enough depth to cover that period of time?

I actually like Angeli a lot, and if we could get someone of his level this class that would be more than fine. But you want more than just one QB as a backup. Too many variables with injuries, suspension, transfers, COVID protocols, That could easily see you drop to your 3rd or even 4th guy on short notice.

Basically every class you need to get a QB to maintain proper depth.

At this point, we are trying to get a Ron Powlus, which we already have for a 3rd QB to fill in. That's why I said we are better off looking through the Transfer Portal unless we can get a flip from a previous guy we tried with.

Did anyone here actually want Smolik?
I did. I thought he threw a nice ball and could rise up the rankings this year with more exposure.

But I also don't think we're suddenly in the dredges of the position. I went through a lot of the highlights of '23 QB recruits and there are still plenty of guys I would take.

PSU wanted a kid who chose them over unnamed SEC offer, Wisconsin and ND interest instead of a Tulane flip

LMFAO I certainly didn't. It's more commentary on the putrid QB recruiting this cycle.
I doubt Smolik has a commitable offer anyway. Let's see how things look on NSD before calling for Rees' head. Lots of things could happen--including Minchey committing or Carr reclassifying--that everyone would be happy with.

Just remember this: CJ Stroud was like a 3 star who was a 4 star at this point. he then became a 5 star. shit changes quick

Ehhhh I hear you, and I do agree he can only be judged on this cycle once it closes. However, when you factor in Rees's body of work in terms of who he has signed, sealed, and delivered since Clark it's...not very impressive.

Pyne (4 star composite 20), Buchner (top 100 overall 21), Angeli (4 star composite 22), ??? (23), Carr (5 star 24).

Right. And Rees squeezed every molecule of potential out of Book, so he's clearly developing the guys that commit. Whoever ends up as our '23 QB is important, but it's not like his entire legacy hangs on it.

Hopefully going forward the QB recruiting gets a fair bit better than that. Carr is a big get but do we consider him committed in this day and age? Have Bama etc even considered him yet?

He seems pretty all-in, and we have some built-in advantages like proximity (but also far enough from home) and the fact that we seem to do well with kids from families who know the score when it comes to big-time football life.
But it's a fair question. A lot can happen between now and Signing Day. Like maybe Tommy gets tired of everyone ragging on his crappy recruiting skills and decides he'd rather OC the LA Rams.

Who is the "we", because all major recruiting sites, ND fans, 2024 QBs and 2024 prospects consider him committed.

Is Drayk Bowen committed? Jack Larsen? Jagusah?

He has offers from Bama, LSU, UGA etc. Why would he not be considered committed?
