Marist is a starter he was on limited reps because they didn't want to rush him back in. Would imagine he splits reps early on in the season.

If that’s the case, it makes no sense to have betrand there, he should be getting mike reps and kollie should be there at will

Liafau, sure, when he’s back to 100%… he showed signs of being a game wrecker pre-injury.

Not sure what leads you to call for Kollie over Bauer and Bertrand right now, though.

Over them at will… betrand struggled big time last 6 games of season

Our LB room is kickass. AND we have a HC who is a linebacker guru. Hard to see trouble there.
Just because we haven't got another Butkus winner there (four in a "decade+" would be asking a lot)
doesn't mean we're not formidable. People should complain about things which are actual worries.

More wanting the group to be a dominant force than holding its own.

Golden wants ALL linebackers learning multiple spots. Don’t read too much into it.

Keep in mind Bertrand played with broken wrist most of season and still produce over 100 tackles

Linebackers are generally only as good as their dline. Defense works front to back

Offense too for that matter

Nobody would be assuming it, more hoping it. Kollie got talk on here like he was a 5 star when recruited so it would be disappointing if he wasn’t better than last years will play by this year.

I mean I guess that's fair, but IMO crootin rankings stop mattering once the players get on campus. Feels like a not great way to measure stuff. And if he takes 2 years to get to where he needs to get, what does it matter really?

Bauer, Bertrand, and Kiser are all very high IQ linebackers and have produced a ton during their time at Notre Dame.

Unfortunately for Bertrand, he was playing a million snaps a game and was not playing his normal position because of Marist’s injury. Over the course of the season, his performance faltered because of that.

They have a very strong 2 deep at linebacker. Besides the DL, it’s probably the team’s deepest position.

We said same thing before last season how strong lb group and depth was and they had an average season at best

I really don't like the OL changes but I also know nothing about OL play soooo.... we'll see.

Correll is going to be the most improved OL in the country if this works out. He was brutal in his last meaningful PT.

The problem is, if your talent and athleticism can’t play assignment football and can’t handle their reads/keys, it doesn’t do any good to put their athleticism on the field. It’s the Bilal/Nyles principle. Bertrand could put himself in the right spot and make the right read a majority of the time—but against elite teams he doesn’t have the speed to get an angle to make a play before a chunk gain. Same with Bauer in coverage against slots and athletic TEs.

Correll is going to be the most improved OL in the country if this works out. He was brutal in his last meaningful PT.

I’m more concerned about Lugg than zeke… zeke did solid as a young center in 2020 but bad at guard in 2021, I haven’t seen Lugg play that well at guard or tackle

Except he played in spring and spring game a good number of reps… that’s confusing..

Hopefully limit reps because he’s that good and doesn’t need them like they do with Mayer

They’ve already told you Al Golden wants the backers to cross train positions. Marcus Freeman said in his presser yesterday that they’re limiting reps of those coming back because he wants them to play at 100%. Not 80%. In order to ease Marist in, he’s giving him fewer reps but expects him to be 100% during those reps.

I, too, want to see the best athletes on the field. But linebackers are the least of the worries (except DL that’s even least-er). We are stacked there and I’m confident over time Freeman and Golden will have the best players play.

Biggest question mark is whether Clarence Lewis can hold onto his job and who gets the second safety spot. We (allegedly) have 5 underclass corners who all have better upside than Lewis but lack the experience. So do you go with Lewis week 1 and be prepared to move on after that? I think yes. I don't think you want a true frosh out there against Ohio State.

The second corner for Ohio state is a tough decision… you summed up the the thoughts

I think you split reps first quarter and see what the right move for remainder of game is after that…. Unless someone pulls a bracy vs UNC in 2020, then you make a move quickly … or if someone is that much better than Lewis you role with it

After watching the offense video of the RB/WR- Tyree looks like he's ready to take the step as a starter (until Diggs comes back) and Estime looks like he is ready to run someone over.
