You have to look at the motivation. The very reason they orchestrated the cover-up was to protect their football brand. They feared the backlash and fines and in the end they got a slap on the wrist and almost all of their punishments were undone.

I truly don't understand how some people still don't get this.

The cover up, which led to countless more kids getting raped, was done solely to protect the football program.

Paterno was on his way out in the early 2000's.
The 2005 team that went 11-1 saved his job.
2003 and 2004 he missed being bowl eligible and the local media was making a lot of noise that the game had passed him by. At a school that historically is happy with 8 or 9 win seasons with the odd 10+ win season thrown in.

Noah Spence dropped Penn State from consideration as soon as the news of the cover up broke and he was considered a Penn State lean at the time.

I'm going to assume that if they had reported this in 2001 about the actions of a coach emritus like Sandusky was that 2005 team isn't exactly the same.

I really didn't get a true understanding of how correct this is until I saw the Happy Valley documentary on Netflix. Some of the stories and op eds I'd read over the years didn't really do it justice until I saw Happy Valley. It gives you a real visual of just how sick those people really are.

What happened was criminal, but they (school, coaches and athletes) are members of the NCAA and the NCAA has bylaws that include conduct. PSU, Paterno, Sandusky failed in that area. NCAA didn't reach far enough IMO.

As a guy in NEPA, I have a soft spot for PSU. I just can't bring myself to hate the university given the amount of friends and family I know that went there.

That said, this round of recruiting is delicious after the CFP win. Pitt is Penn State's little brother who is ND's little brother.

PSU football is broke because they spent a lot of NIL money to keep Singleton, Allen, and Allar (I heard from a PSU friend acquaintance the three were in the $8 million dollar range for this upcoming season) Could have easily not paid one of the RBs and they wouldn’t have skipped a beat for this upcoming year IMO, and they’d actually have recruiting funds.
