Someone posted this SI article in another thread. It confirmed what we already kinda knew. Freeman was pissed about the way Franklin treated him at the bowl game, and he used it to motivate the team:

Penn State’s James Franklin supplied the final diss. The head coaches’ joint press conference the day before the Nittany Lions and Fighting Irish met in the Orange Bowl turned into something of a Franklin filibuster and a condescending comedy act.

Franklin referred to Freeman throughout the press conference by his first name. Freeman, pillar of courtesy that he is, called his counterpart “Coach Franklin.” The 52-year-old Franklin asked Freeman how old he was (“Thirty-eight,” was Freeman’s terse response), then made a joke about Freeman’s head of hair, compared to his bald dome. For good measure, Franklin opined that Notre Dame, staunchly independent, should join a conference.

The look on Freeman’s face during the press conference made clear that he felt insulted. Notre Dame sources confirmed as much later. “I mean, he was furious,” one said. “And he used it with the team. He said, ‘These guys don’t respect you. Let me give you an example of how I know they don’t respect me.’ ”

Kiser says most of the players were aware of what transpired at the press conference via social media before Freeman returned to the team hotel. “The team was already feeling a certain type of way,” Kiser says. “And when Coach Freeman got back, you could tell there was an added chip on his shoulder. Essentially, [Franklin] was trying to big brother our coach. That was just spitting in our face. Respect your opponent.”

One night later, Freeman was 1–0 against Franklin. His team battled through a barrage of playoff injuries to become one of the last two standing in the longest postseason in college history. The only thing Notre Dame didn’t accomplish in an overachieving season was to end a national championship drought that has stretched to 37 years.

Yeah they can chant "overrated" at their own program and coach ahead of their annual lose to OSU in a few weeks. Or maybe they can chant the final score from the Orange Bowl or something.

Their fans were easily the very worst in the playoffs last year. IU fans were mostly okay if not a little delusional, UGA fans are UGA fans and I'm so used to them it was expected, and even OSU fans were fine.

PSU fans were far and away the most obnoxious with this random toxic hatred for ND. They are also totally delusional about the state of their program. Under the BK years it felt like ND fans were pretty realistic about who we were. They were talking shit like like they had Saban on the sidelines and 2019 Burrow under center.

My only explanation is that their fanbase is largely centered in Philly. Truly the very worst collection of human beings in sports are Philadelphia based sports fans.

Really need to add a clown emoji reaction to this site.

Lol state college is no where near Philly. It’s just as close to DC as Philly, and Philly isn’t even a college sports town in the first place. Probably has as many Irish fans as PSU.

Wow, you're so right. How dare I malign the notoriously great fans of the greater Philadelphia area.

Relax, Philly, don't climb a lamp post, I was just poking fun at Philly. But I will be henceforth exceedingly serious.

Calling someone a clown for implying PSU has fans from Philly really kinda made his point lmao

I'm not from Philly but it does not seem unreasonable to think that a lot of people who attended and/or root for Pennsylvania State University would live in or around Pennsylvania's largest city.

This is like when I make a mistake cand refer to like Long Island as NYC and some guy who grew up there overhears and I end up with a 20 minute long lecture on the intricacies of the geography of New York and their historical designations of each part of the area.

Relax, it was just a snarky response to the overused trope that Philly fans are degenerates. Currently watching the Eagles implode right now so that’s not helping.

The point wasn’t that there aren’t PSU fans in Philly. Of course there are. It’s just that it’s not a college football city at all. There have been games where PSU played at Temple in Philly and the Linc didn’t even sell out.

Honestly, most of the fans are just spread out all across the state, especially our rural areas and smaller cities.

Yeah Philly has PSU fans, but it is way more of a professional fandom, while the small towns have the bigger PSU contingents.

This is right on.

I live in central PA, but I work (and went to college) in Philly. I see just as much, if not more, ND gear in center city. Once you get outside the burbs, the middle part of the state is blanketed in blue & white.

I love the thought of PSU staff and Allar being completely bamboozled by Oregon coming out in Knowles speciality on defense. 3 safeties with a rover middle safety is one of Knowles calling card
