Definitive contributor. return guy and rotational WR at minimum. 6th year. North Chicago burbs.

Smart kid getting away from whatever the hell Iowa calls itself when it has the football because it’s definitely not offense. Yes, I’m still upset I wasted 3 hours watching Iowa run the worst offense known to man and letting the Michigan walk to a big ten title.

I am skeptical.

Apparently the kid stated awhile back that he wanted his final year to get "tape" at WR. So he knew this going into Spring football and Iowa doesn't exactly have a daunting depth chart. Now post Spring, he decides to transfer? Petras is a known quantity at QB and Iowa has traditionally had a risk averse offense. So you can't reasonable believe he was expecting some radical passing change in style or effectiveness. So with that in mind, why transfer now?

You can expect both an increase in passing effectiveness and in competition played at Notre Dame that’s for sure

Iowa’s passing game is 20 years behind the top programs. This guy’s lack of production is probably due to that

Possible, but unlikely. This will be his Covid year / 6th year.
It's a low risk option, IMO.

Who knows if Avery will be ready to go in fall camp, we could use the depth at the position.

I think your questions are valid but I don't see the harm in taking a veteran guy who will, at the very least, immediately improve our special teams. Feel like we haven't had a return game since Vontez Duff. Okay, I'm exaggerating...Tom Zbikowski.

Apparently Mason is more of a punt block than a punt return ST coach but we will see

He likes to set up kick returns, though, and ND could use a body there so as to not risk Tyree or Styles for want of a home-run hitter.

BK and Polian were even risk-averse on standard kick return for fear of illegal blocking that would hurt field position. Mason will set up some (legal) walls and funnels to try and create a lane.

This is Ferentz talking about the punt return:
"I just feel really good with him back there fielding, good judgment, good ball skills, and what he showed today I think was really what some of our guys, offensive guys especially thought, and we don't practice punt returns a lot, we just don't do that, or kick returns," Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said this past season. "I still go back to the '80s seeing Quinn Early get his shoulder knocked out. I'll never forget that, on a kickoff coverage in a scrimmage, so we just don't do that, and to watch the way he's performed three weeks now, it's really great."

Iowa had a whopping 12 touchdown passes last year. ND had 30, OSU 46 for reference.

Charlie Jones had 3 of them + a KR TD.

They have 3 “established” options + like Arland Bruce which could have spelled Jones thinking hey with my return skills I can find a new home and just choose who I’m gonna get the ball at WR at too. I don’t need to wonder if I’ll be the third or fourth option for a non existent pass game
