I'm actually fine with how he left because I always thought he was an asshole, he was just my asshole because he was at ND, so when he finally did leave in the manner that he did I wasn't terribly surprised by it.

The worst thing he probably did for me from a football standpoint was hire Brian Van Gorder. The best thing he ever did was hire Marcus Freeman.

I still consider the Elko hire to be a major turning point for Kelly. Without that the program could have really tanked.

First, I think Kelly resurrected ND football from the Weis disaster, when ol Schematic Advantage had the signal honor of leading Notre Dame teams to HOME losses in FOOTBALL within one calendar year

Second the big lie against Kelly is that he didn't involve alumni. really?
Did he keep David Grimes?
Did he hire Autry Denson?
Did he hire Todd Lyght?
Did he hire ron Powlus?
did he hire Hunter Bivin?
Did he hire Chris Watt?
Did he hire Jeff Burris?

Third, he elevated the S&C coach to a coordinator position of pay and status to be equal to that of the DC and OC
@(a) Did he hire Tommy Rees as Qb coach and elevate him. sure, the guy parafinned, but that happens

Fourth, he had the handicap of a lousy boss
Swarbrick. Swarbrick has taken advantage of a weak president and a feckless board but Keely smoldered against having to tell the public lie that Swarbrick was wonderful.

So when kelly left he dicked Swarbrick. Between the two give me Kelly.

Kelly left things, far far better than when he found them.

I think Pete Sampson said, “Brian Kelly never loved ND as much as fans do” and that pretty much sums it up for me. I’m grateful Swarbrick signed him away from Cincinnati & BK brought the program to where it is today. After the failure & embarrassment of Davie/O’Leary/Willingham/Weis, that was a tough row to hoe & he did it.

Yep. The Kelly hate gets a little thick.

He shouldn’t have left when we were still playoff-eligible. He shouldn’t have said he liked LSU because the players there “want to be great,” implying what that does about the players at Notre Dame (who by and large choose a much tougher road in college football).

But beyond that I have no quarrel with the man. He led this program out of 15 years in the wilderness. He never whined (publicly) about Notre Dame being Notre Dame. He may have been a prick at times but a lot of successful people are that. He did what he could and left Notre Dame better than he found it. Thanks, and let’s move on.

I was done with him until last week. He should keep his mouth closed and bury his dead.

Orgeron telling the ND squad they're going to win it all soon felt like a retort to Kelly. Maybe it wasn't meant as such but as a fan it sure felt nice to hear coming from him.

I didn't read into his comments as if he was taking aim at BK, more so the fact that he really wanted Marcus Freeman at LSU last season and saw the talent in him as a coach and recruiter and sees the potential for this program to take the next step under his leadership. Just my opinion

I agree. It felt like a retort for me but I know that wasn't Orgeron's intent.

As an ND fan, seeing the guy that Kelly replaced who has won National Championships as an HC and as an assistant say that to those boys just felt really good to me coming off of the articles Kelly had out last week with the AP and CBS.

I have a hard time with the argument that BK didn't love Notre Dame the way fans do. He's an Irish Catholic from New England. I think it's pretty obvious through what he talked about when he first came that he and his family were Subway Domers.

With that said, sometimes as a coach you have to remove being a fan to succeed. That isn't me giving BK a pass, the way he left was bad, and how he handled landing in Baton Rogue was bad. I think he felt hurt by Notre Dame and the administration, and that can leave a sour taste.

Again, this isn't a defense of actions, but I don't think it's fair to say he was never as much of a fan. And sometimes to be successful as a coach, you have to remove yourself from the fandom and the attachment to get things done correctly.

Well considering a real fan wouldn't ditch ND, I'm fairly confident he "didn't love ND the way fans do" lol

All you have to do is look at how BK has talked about ND since leaving and how Lou talked about ND after leaving to see BK didn’t love ND the way fans do. Lou did and still does.

That's a little egregious I'd say. A fan can make a business decision to leave, especially if he felt he wasn't being appreciated and the admin wasn't doing what he felt necessary. Again, this isn't agreeing with his moves, but to say he never was a fan or anything like that I think is just wrong.

Yeah, he's talking like a scorned lover who was sick of never getting what he felt he deserved. Now, that doesn't excuse the behavior, but it is totally something that does happen. I mean, he said in his press conference, his first words as HC for Notre Dame about growing up a massive fan and listening to the calls on Sunday's after church. So if you're going to take what he is saying now, as someone who feels (not necessarily true) he wasn't given the avenues to properly succeed, you have to take what he said then into consideration too.

And ND treated Lou A LOT worse than ND treated BK yet Lou never trashed talked ND

Yes, she wore that jersey to the Fiesta Bowl when Hawk’s Buckeyes faced off against Brady Quinn-led ND. I believe they were engaged at the time & I believe she was easy on the eyes as she got a fair amount of camera time.

AJ Hawk seems like a pretty cool cat. I’ve listed to him talk CFB on ESPNU radio and on MacAfee’s show.
