I know this kid is supposed to be great. but can we get a qb that is actually big. This guy is actually probably 5'11 or 6'0. This is a problem with the qb industry. You cant get a full story on the development when these kids are so young and not fully developed.

the QB industry has problems all the way to the highest level though. While I definitely prefer a bigger stronger athlete back there, the truth is the ability to throw the football far outweighs anything related to height.

If im not mistaken the top 10 ND QBs all time are rife with "not big" guys.

QB evaluation and development will always be a crap shoot unfortuantely.

I'm working on it. My son is a 6'2 9th grade QB currently. Only 155 pounds, though. Trying to bulk him up a little, lol. Figure the scouts would want him at least 185 before I take him on the camp tour.

ND top 15 in yards passing:

Quinn – 6’3

Book – 6’0

Clausen – 6’2

Rees – 6’2

Powlus – 6’1

Beuerlein – 6’3

Mirer – 6’3

Golson – 6’0

Kizer – 6’4

Jackson – 6’0

Theismann – 6’0

Hanratty – 6’1

Montana – 6’2

Kiel – 6’0

Clements – 6’0

6/15 listed at 6'0. I think everyone would agree Montana, Powlus, Rees, and Clausen all appeared smaller than their listed heights.

How many of these heights have been legitimately confirmed though? Ya know, by standing 4 people down from a coach or another player in a group shot?

A couple things on QB height though:

1) Some of those older guys were considered "typical" or perhaps even "big" in some instances, in their time. The 6'4"-6'5" 220-230lb threshold was a phenomenon of the late-80's to early 2010's.

2) I have railed on ND since I've returned to IE about signing bigger QB's. But that's certainly not the end-all, be-all. But it should definitely be taken into consideration when you're evaluating/offering multiple guys every year. If you have a 5'11" prospect and a 6'3" prospect rated as the same, the rule of thumb should be to take the bigger guy- as most of the time the bigger guy will have a bigger arm, be able to see down the field better, etc. If the staff values length at every other position (for all the reasons length are beneficial), then is also applies to QB's. Again, this isn't a fool-proof method, as a bigger, stronger guy may also end up having the mechanics and accuracy of Andrew Hendrix. But as a basis point, there's more to work with on the bigger QB.

Only a few of these guys actually attended a combine to get a true height. Most of these are what was listed either on the universitys page or their NFL page if possible. Obviously the older guys are even less reliable.

And you are certainly correct in the times changing. Just trying to point out that height isnt the end all be all, especially at the college level. There are certanily advantages to height and ones im all in for. But I would rather the evaluation be mostly on arm talent and accuracy.

You telling me if Baker Mayfield or Kyler Murray were on some of our recent teams we wouldnt have been significantly better? (not directly aimed at you personally).

Sayin may be shorter than we hope but if he can really sling it, does it matter is mostly my point.

Theismann was 5’9”
yeah and as noted above im not going to dog a guy any further if hes listed at 6'0.

Definitely not cool to dog the short kings.

Might be 5'9'' on the field, but all ND QBs are 6'0'' in our hearts.

Completely agree about Rees and Clausen - on the field they both seemed a lot smaller than Brady Quinn, not just one inch. Powlus felt bigger but maybe he was just thick? Or maybe it was the shoulder pads back then.

Of course Powlus was basically a contemporary of Drew Brees and Tom Brady and they weren't big either. They turned out OK.

Guys if this kid has elite arm talent and athletic ability who cares if he's 6', 6'1, or 6'10?

We have to care because we've bought into this crap for ages. When word got out that the NFL measures the length of your hand, everyone was like, "Really? Wow, these guys are genius. This must be really important, so I better care about it". Same for height. Convince me that a guy 6' 2-1/2" is a better deal than a guy 6'2". If all other things are equal you take the 6'4" guy over the 6'0", but there have been plenty of QB's that have shown height isn't the end all.

I've actually been on the side that we need to add size to the QB room but I'm not planting that flag here. Julian is being groomed as the new age QB. Kid can rip with multiple arm angles, from different platforms, the works. He's taken extremely well to Danny Hernandez's coaching, total stud for what he's being taught. Will it translate? Who knows but we're going to find out one way or another. I'd like him to find out in a gold helmet.

If I remember correctly I'd say the height for Powlus is about right based on when I have met him and I'm 6'2.

The Rivals LA Camp series story up today (free to a good home) has three of their analysts predicting for five of the camp's attendees including Sayin. All three are picking ND.

One did say Texas is his "dream school" and "childhood favorite" which is hard to figure unless his family is from there. They all mention his relationship with Rees being the key here.

I doubt if Rees is still at ND on signing day 2024.

Right on cue.

INDIANAPOLIS -- It is hands-down the most digested, critiqued and eyebrow-raising number attached to NFL quarterback prospects each year. And on Tuesday at the annual combine for the best players in the country, former Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett became the latest high-profile passer to have his hand size become part of his pre-draft windup.

Pickett's right hand was measured at 8½ inches, which would be the smallest of any quarterback currently in the NFL.

“For all the talk about star quarterbacks Malachi Nelson, Nico Iamaleava, and Jaden Rashada, the most technically sound and consistent quarterback at the camp on Sunday was 2024 prospect Julian Sayin. Standing at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, it might be easy to miss this four-star quarterback in a lineup, but he immediately stood out when the QBs started throwing. The ball jumps off Sayin's hand and he's able to throw with power and touch. He can certainly get the ball downfield and proved to throw one of the more catchable deep balls of the group. Sayin gets the ball out of the hand quickly and knows how to lead receivers and deliver passes on time.”

Not exactly slouches in the comparison group.
