Based on the rumors in Lexington I don’t believe Stoops would ever be a candidate for ND. If he expressed interest I would expect ND to turn him away.

4. Miles Davis
5. Bill O’Riley

Finalist
6. Lou Holtz

Should fuckin' bring in Lou as an assistant coach just for the bowl game at least. He can come up with a pre-game speech. Maybe we haven't won a NY6 bowl game since he was a HC cause Kevin White and Boob Davie conspired to screw over Lou and push him out of town, and they angered the Lady on the Dome. /NoItalics

I think that no matter what they need somebody who can run the style of defense he wants to recruit to or there will be some serious friction. I expect us to go with an internal promotion, but I think a lot might depend on how the Fiesta Bowl goes.

This. MFMF will put a guy in place that shares the same defensive philosophies so you can eliminate Lea right away. Given this is his first year, there may not be anyone on staff that is ready to run his D. I wouldn't be surprised if he looked at someone at Cincy that has been part of his D for 2-3 years and won't need a learning period.

First post here, long time lurker...

It's exciting that Freeman gets to hire two coordinators. I'm curious if he goes more for experience or other young and hungry guys. I think someone with HC experience on staff is must, or like a HC whisper like Polian was for Kelly.

Now that he's officially fired, Manny Diaz could be good at DC

Welcome 1219Boopa.

He might just be keeping his options open. Its still early in the coaching carousel. You never know who might be interested.

Elston is currently Recruiting Coordinator and Run Game Coordinator along with DL coach. Polian is currently the AHC. If anyone currently on the staff really fits the description of an AHC, its Elston given that he will have the most experience of the expected returning coaches.

Besides just logistical reasons for waiting, I could see it maybe Freeman doesn’t know if he can or wants to call the D? Can he be HC and call the D? Can Elston? Can Mickens? Can _____ play call the D? That could be a reason to use the bowl season before making a decision.

Assistant I assume means he’s back in the big leagues not in an analyst role.

I like how Brody said former ND Co-DC and not former ND analyst lol

Kerry Combs a possibility? He has the Ohio roots. He's plenty experienced and provides longevity. His defensive playcalling wasn't great this year but that probably had more to do with the linebackers this year. He's known (I believe) as a relentless recruiter. tOSU already has a new DC. Maybe CMF will bring him in.

Ummmmmmmmmm we have to agree to disagree on the dentist's son from East St. Louis who convinced daddy to send him to Julliard, but whose real agenda was to stalk Charley "Bird" Parker.

so he had substance abuse problem, or six..................

His D was a mess at OSU this year. IIRC, they demoted him after the third or fourth game.

I’m not expecting move movement for ND till after early NSD and at the latest after the bowl game.

Yeah, MF is jet setting all around trying to finalize this recruiting class. After signing day at the earliest. Wouldn't be surprised to see him wait until after the bowl game when everyone is done.

I doubt many stud coaches wanted the job of competing the way Notre Dame wanted to compete with one hand tied behind his back ( and the salary). Mind you I agree with Notre Dame's policy of the student life experience but what you see is what you get-Freeman just lets them get off the hook and saves them big $$$$. I'm afraid we're looking at 10 years of Davie/Faust/Willingham/Charlie type teams until they get lucky and hire a guy like Kelly who is experienced and has a heart for Notre Dame. It hurts to say this and I understand but Notre Dame just doesnt care to win one in the style and cost of the other guys in college football. You'll just have to understand that and live with it-guys like Kelly are'nt walking thru the door very often and you cant let the players choose a coach.

I've heard some names thrown around on pods. Biaggi from Purdue is an obvious choice for special teams. Mike Tressel the DC at Cincy would make sense at DC. WR coach Hartline from OSU is a looooongshot but would be an awesome hire.

All these guys have MFMF ties I believe.

This exodus is all defensive guys, right? If Heacock leaving does this to the program then maybe Matt Campbell wasn't their secret to success.

Seriously, this has me hoping that if Heacock is leaving then he's coming to ND. Though I fear it means losing Elston.

Yes and all, at minimum, projected starters for next year. Kim and Young I don’t think are like prized gem type transfers but would certainly be welcomed in our S room

I don't think Heacock would fit in all that well at ND
