I thought there wasn't a tear, just a strain like a hyper-extension or something? It takes like 4-6 weeks for an MCL to heal, don't get the 8 week timeline here unless it's worse than they said. Obviously don't want him back too soon and not 100%, just confused here.

MCL's like ACL's take some time and depend on the severity. Unless it is very mild with no tear, he won't be back for a while. From a doctors website.

Ligament injuries are referred to as sprains, and they’re classified or graded by severity. Grade 1 sprains are the mildest, and they typically resolve on their own with a little TLC. In a grade 2 sprain, the ligament is stretched and often partially torn. You’ll probably have some swelling, and your knee may feel weak or unstable. Again, many grade 2 sprains heal on their own with physical therapy and other conservative treatments.

Grade 3 sprains are the most severe. These occur when the ligament is badly torn — usually completely torn in two. These sprains need to be surgically repaired to restore stability and function in the knee joint.

As with any knee surgery, your recovery time will be based in part on the extent of your injury, the type of surgery that’s performed, your ability to heal, and your own goals and expectations. Soon after your surgery, physical therapy will begin. Seeing the therapist on a regular basis is an important part of the healing process. Strengthening and gentle stretching exercises can help your knee regain its function, and it’s also important for preventing stiffness that can interfere with your recovery. Overall, you should expect to regain most of your joint function within about two to three months, but returning to sports can take longer.

From what I'm reading/hearing, he's having surgery Thursday. And the timeline is 6-8 weeks for the MCL to heal on its own, and an undetermined amount of time for a meniscus injury. He'll possibly be out for the year.

Just a total kick in the nuts for him, because looking towards his NFL future he is missing tons of development time. Also obviously bad for the team.

Wow...yeah, that pretty much debunks the early reports that it wasn't bad.

I will be curious to find out if they perform surgery on both or let the MCL heal on its own and only operate on the meniscus. If he has surgery on both, I wouldn't be surprised that he is out for the year. No need to rush him back with 1 or 2 games left and risk his career.

Well, that's good news and bad news. Good news that the MCL wasn't involved. Bad news is that he's going to be feeling that meniscus the rest of his life. No mention if it was repaired by sewing or partial removal?

Kelly threw some cold water on the idea that Blake would be back this year in today's presser. "We're not counting on him being back" or something to that effect.
So much for 6-8 weeks. Kelly said Rob Hunt has not said "he's ahead of schedule" which means IMO he's not on schedule.

I don't know if he's not on schedule, but I really didn't see him coming back this year. 8 weeks might be the norm for most, but we're talking about a massive dude. Even if it heals on schedule, he'll need a lot of time to rebuild the leg muscles. Play it safe and get him ready for next year.

It’s usually a one year turnaround from surgery so he’s ahead of schedule but I wouldn’t look for him to play this season.

It really depends on the type of repair and how extensive the tear is. My son tore his and was back wrestling in six weeks, but he was also wrestling at 125lbs at the time, not 325lb. lol

Yeah, usually if there is no surgery on the meniscus you can be back in a month or two. If there is to stitch it back together (and that's my understanding of what happened) I'd be happy if he was available for spring ball. Honestly just insanely bad luck for Blake who is missing out on a ton of development and could have chronic problems with that knee depending on how everything heals.

have there been any updates on fishers injury and if he's about ready to come back and play this season.

without Fisher getting hurt who knows when we would have realized Alt's potential. Of course I'm looking forward to Fisher coming back and dominating the next couple of years.... Personally, I would rather Fisher taking this year off and coming back in 2022.

Kelly has hinted that he won't be back this year.

Yeah, even if he's a quick healer and he's cleared for the final weekend, I would hold him out until spring. No need to risk additional harm.

If he's fully healthy, I'd play him in final game + playoff. This dude has virtually never played and getting the feel is important for rookies. He needs to watch himself on film, get used to setting, etc.

Even if it's 10 snaps a game. He'll be better in Y2 for it.

I think I'd bring him back too if he's 100% at the end of the season (I know Kelly has already said it's probably not happening). He won't burn a year of eligibility at that point, and if he's fully good to go it's worth getting him reps given the state of the OL and the time it's taken to get guys up to speed. We're losing a few more next year and it would be good if we don't miss much of a beat next time.

There's no chance his red shirt year matters, right? I assume he's gone after his third year but there's no chance he's staying for a fifth year. Play the kid.

Indeed. I'm baffled by people thinking we need to preserve eligibility for this guy.

Everything Brian Kelly Said Thursday Before Notre Dame vs. UNC (247sports.com)

"Blake is ahead of schedule, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's gonna put him on the field this year. But he is doing really well, healing extremely well. You don't know really how people will respond to surgery and how their tissue heals and how all those things come together. He's one of those guys that things have come together really quickly for him. Moving around already, but doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna put him on the field any quicker. But he is ahead of our rehabilitation schedule in the training room."

Big Fish looked to be a participant in today’s practice. Wonder if there’s any chance of seeing him Jan 1?

No need for him to play imo. Why risk it...I say it's good he gets these 15 practices and be happy with it
