From their Class of 17 that are eligible for a fifth year, five are left out of their fourteen signees. Their top five from that class (Sarrell, Little, Mills, Parkinson and Adebo) have moved on. Others eligible for a fifth are three walkons thqt got scholarships, two that returned from Missions that were in the Class of '15 and three true Juniors (all starters) from the Class of '16.

You would expect the three walkons to scholarship to graduate and move on. Connor Wedington, WR, Class of '17 has been passed over at WR and is their Kick Returner only. Doubt he stays.

Stanford's scholarship count at this time is 88. That assumes six walkons who had scholarships last year have those renewed, which is usually the case. Also, six players will get 6th year scholarships, taking advantage of NCAA rules.

Offense
QB - 4
RB - 7
FB - 4
TE - 4
OT - 6
OG/C - 5
Total - 40

Defense
DE - 8
DT - 2
ILB - 7
OLB - 8
CB - 10
S - 8
Total - 43

ST - 5

Some context:

https://stanford.rivals.com/news/second-year-dl-josh-pakola-is-in-the-transfer-portal

The loss hurts the Tree significantly as DL is one of their weakest positions.

2021 DE Depth Chart: 6 scholarship players (2 were lowly recruited) and 2 WOs
5th: 4 star Ryan Johnson
Sr: 4 star Thomas Booker, walk on Trey LaBounty (played in 3 games in 3 yrs)
Jr: none
Soph: 3 star Lance Keneley, walk on Matt Merritt
Fr: 4 star Aaron Armitage, unranked overall 3 stars - Zach Buckey (68 DE in 2021 class) and Anthony Franklin (86 DE in 2021 class)

Only their DT position looks worse:
5th: 4 star Dalyn Wade-Perry
Sr: none
Jr: none
Soph: 3 star Tobin Phillips, walk on Zephron Lester
Fr: none

Depth is a huge issue but the frontline isn’t really that bad. They run a traditional 3-4 with a stand up ROLB. So, they could start Booker, Perry, Johnson, and Andres Fox. All 4 star guys along the ‘DL’.

On Pakola specifically he’s up to 310 lbs and useless apparently. I believe Shaw left him at home for their trip to Washington. Unsure what he’s been doing to gain that much weight but he was listed as a WDE out of HS. Probably not appropriately as he was already 267 but damn that’s a lot of weight.

C’mon LL.

Ryan Johnson as a 4 star prospect had offers from everyone as a recruit, but he has been a bust to this point as a college player. After redshirting, he contributed 10 tackles and zero sacks in 20 games over 3 years. He has never been a starter.

Pakola, as a higher rated 4 star, had a smaller offer sheet (maybe due to west coast location vs Virginia?) but still had 11/12 PAC offers plus ND, Florida, and Georgia. He was disciplined after playing in the first 3 games of 2020 according to articles, so it’s bullish to say he might have been “useless.” Was he underperforming according to his ranking? You bet. Has Ryan Johnson? Yes and for a longer period. They may have shared the starting role in 2021. His loss hurts front end talent (as the highest regarded prospect besides Stephen Herron - who will be one of their starting OLB - in their entire front 7) and obviously depth.

And you mentioned Andres Fox? Another underachieving recruit. He had 3 tackles in their 6 games last year and only played in 4 as a soph without recording any tackles.

I’m not trying to hype the doom and gloom, but not only is their depth horrendous, but besides Perry and Booker, they don’t have talent up front. Their front 7 has been poorly recruited for 3 years. Whatever gains McKee and the young offense develop in 2021, will be offset in 2022 when their D most likely continues their slide.

I don’t think it’s remotely controversial to say that their frontline, front 4-5, won’t be that bad. Because they won’t be. Though I’ll admit my recall was a bit lazy as so was your post. That isn’t even their starting lineup as you completely left out Stephon Herron and Thomas Shaffer. Who down the stretch last year was arguably their two best DL. Again, ROLB’s are DL for all intents and purposes in a 3-4.

That unit will not be bad this year unless they get hit with injuries. Depth in the entire team is horrendous but frontline defenders are not that bad.

Interesting tidbit for their front 3 in their 3-4

RS SR Dalyn Wade-Perry
RS SR Ryan Johnson
SR Thomas Booker
RS FR Tobin Phillips
RS FR Lance Keneley
RS FR Zephron Lester
FR Aaron Armitage (5 Tech)
FR Zach Buckey (3-7 Tech)
FR Anthony Franklin

Looks like Stanford will have 9 scholarship DLinemen going into next season. Their top 3 are actually very solid and I think could be in line to be a pretty good 3-4 front. However, the lack of depth is a killer. 6 guys that are all backups now have never set foot on the field which is crazy. So there’s gonna be a ton of unknowns beyond the top 3 which is probably a grave concern. If somehow the top 3 could stay healthy all season then they could be fine but I think Stanford won’t be great along the DLine. As for LBers I’m not too sure but I think they’ve got a decent amount of bodies

RS SR Jordan Fox
RS SR Gabe Reid
RS JR Andres Fox
RS JR Jacob Mangum-Farrar
RS JR Tobe Umerah
RS JR Caleb Kelly
RS JR Tangaloa Kaufusi
RS SO Stephen Herron
RS SO Tristan Sinclair
RS SO Levani Damuni
RS SO Aeneas DiCosmo
RS FR Kiersten Lee
FR Ese Dubre

I would agree that depth is a concern, the starting DL is solid, and "6 guys that are all backups now have never set foot on the field which is crazy".

Shaw typically does not play freshmen and with only Pakula recruited in the 2019 class and no DE, they are going to need RS Fr to step up behind the starters. Ryan Johnson is the only DL player outside the starters who has seen much PT.

I did not think Robinson was back and thought Thunder Keck, LB earned a scholarship and played significant time last year. The second string LBs have seen little PT.

Didn’t intend on a quick opponent position post, including their walk ons and some player rankings for context, as lazy. What was it lacking? Schaffer? He announced NFL intentions. I listed 2021 DL roster players, hence the incoming freshman DEs and no OLBs (who may or may not rush but play along with DEs on the field).

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Dreaming wide awake! <a href="https://t.co/TLJkOQvT1W">pic.twitter.com/TLJkOQvT1W</a></p>— Thomas Schaffer (@THschaffer) <a href="https://twitter.com/THschaffer/status/1349058509703245824?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 12, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

With Schaffer, as you noted one of their best, and also listed as their 2 deep DT on game week depth charts, their 2020 defensive stats:
6.58 yards allowed per play 10/12 in PAC
8.3 yards allowed per attempt tied with Arizona for last in conference
5.46 yards allowed per carry 10/12 in PAC
9th scoring defense in PAC
points per drive was 3.00, 105th out of 127 teams

I’m not impressed with their defensive personnel including some of their frontline players in addition to their lack of depth. Both our opinions are fine, neither controversial. You mentioned Fox and Johnson are solid starters. I disagree and provided stats as to why. Booker, Perry, and Herron - who I acknowledged but he didn’t start until their last game - are good players, but not sure why the jab about a lazy post when it was strictly roster personal and a link on their transfer portal player who was listed in their 2 deep with Johnson and played in their first 3 games before being sent home without returning to the team due to discipline. You labeled him as “useless.” My point is he is comparable to Johnson. Both as solid front line players? Or also useless?

Therefore my c’mon. But it’s all good man. I get it. Thanks for all the insights and work on the board. I still like IE over the paywall stuff I submit to because of guys like you.

Anyway, Shaw will likely cross train some of their gluten of OLB to be smaller DEs.

I stand corrected on Schaffer. I looked at a depth chart yesterday that still had him on it. Still, a DL of Booker, Perry, Johnson, and Herron isn’t going to be bad. There is a difference between bad and good. They’ll be somewhere in between.

The useless comment regarding Pakola comes from reading comments at Stanford’s 247 board. He was sent home from the Washington game and never returned to the team. Apparently there are some maturity issues here. His transfer hurts depth but it doesn’t appear to hurt there starting lineup at all.

"Stanford coach David Shaw said Friday he is “pissed off at Fox” for giving the Cardinal a noon ET/9 a.m. PT kickoff time for their season opener on Sept. 4 against Kansas State in Arlington, Texas."

Hey David, maybe take your team to Texas a few days earlier to acclimate? Maybe complain to your AD?

He's got a beef. A survey conducted by the AD's office showed half of Cardinal fans would not watch the game at 9am.

While the other 4 said they would.

Congrats on the return to mediocrity, Stanford! We knew you'd get back there eventually. Now quit whining about your kickoff time.

I don't know this for certain as I don't follow Stanford recruiting close enough. But, I believe (Singer mentioned it a few weeks back) they were not going to accept June OV's until they realized there was a good chance they'd miss out on a number of prospects to programs like ND, without ever getting them to campus. Stanford playing catch-up to ND. I think we can all get on board with that.

Wasn't Bobby Mac just talking about him yesterday?

Yep. Threw the same thing up in the '22 Class thread.

I gotta feeling he's the Zak Zinter of this class. Woulda been Irish, then balls out for a rival.

Michigan wanted him too.

Another instance whereby you have to question PJ Fleck, he can't land the top player in Minnesota yet again
