But, if reports are true and Evans is actually an OL, I think Berrong/Nickel/Staes is subpar for Notre Dame TE recruiting. Not a disaster, but that is a position we should recruit better than anyone else in the country, and those guys just amount to pretty good, recruiting wise.
I wouldn't trade Mayer, Bauman, Berrong, Evans, Nickel, Staes for any teams TE room in the country. Adding Raridon makes it even better.
Mayer's Mayer. I see Bauman and Berrong being elite at ND. Evans is a wildcard. Might be as good as Bauman, might be Takacs. Nickel will play, maybe he's a glue guy that does all the dirty work like Brock Wright ended up doing? Staes will be a factor in the pass game... he looks like he has "it". Raridon if he comes, is a longer, (more athletic?) version of Mayer who won't be as skilled as Mayer the player but has as much long term ceiling if he has what it takes between the ears.
What could they have done better?
1. Land Fidone or Ferguson in '21 as an Eifert TE. Not sure if that's even a TE issue or belongs in a WR thread.
2. Skip the ceiling move on Evans and go after a guaranteed TE like Aaron Steinfeldt who will kill it at IU. Maybe Jack Pugh out of Ohio who went to Iowa or Wisconsin?
3. If Jameson Geers doesn't tear up his knee his Jr. year, good chance he's at ND with Berrong. He starts his Sr. season tomorrow in IL and has a showdown with Kaleb Brown in 2 weeks.
4. There is of course the 2019 cycle where they ended up not taking anyone but it was sandwiched in between Treble/Takacs and Mayer/Bauman so did it hurt? All I can think of that year is Freiermuth was Irish if offered on time but they waited 6 months after he committed to PSU and couldn't flip him. I also wanted Sam LaPorta who ended up sneaking into Iowa.
