The only strange thing to me is the color of the helmet in the video only. It looks good in the photos, but the orange tone in the video is weird. Judging by how different it looks in different lights, I have to guess it's some kind of pearlescent paint like you'd see in Need for Speed: Underground.

I really hope the images of the jerseys they have for sale on the bookstore website are bad Photoshop and not actually photos because the shoulder graphic looks sloppy as hell.

I suspect this might be another alumni vs. football fan split. Usually alumni tend toward "alternate uniforms are stupid," but every alum I talk to absolutely loves these. "God, Country, Notre Dame" should be plastered onto every single piece of merchandise Under Armour and the University can come up with.

I wouldn't be upset if they announced these were the new every week uniforms. No italics.

so they like the uniforms because it has 4 words on them or because they look good. Very different things IMO.

Both. The problem I had with last year's uniforms is that they didn't look or feel particularly Notre Dame-y, if that makes sense. I think Alabama's uniforms look amazing, but I wouldn't want Notre Dame wearing them.

last year's were a stock UA template which they subsequently rolled out for Cincy, Auburn and other programs. There was nothing specifically Notre Dame about them

Are they tweaking the standard uni's as well or staying the same? Seems like they always make a few subtle changes each year to keep sales moving.

How much does incorporating a shout out to history really matter, when this is done to be 'cool for the kids', and recruits don't care at all about the history - they just like things that look sweet.

You remember those Maryland unis from 4 years ago that looked like salsa? They could have had our declaration of independence on them and the kids still would have thought they were as ugly as sin.

"The kids" are a consideration but they're not the only consideration. SALES are also a consideration and "the kids" aren't the ones who buy $100 jerseys. The people who buy $100 jerseys are "the finance professionals from suburban Connecticut" and "the douchebags with the F-150s from the Upper Peninsula."

I think the helmets are actually alright. The shade of green combo'd with that yellow is all wrong though. If they simply went to forest green with gold it would've been salvageable.

As is, it's a horrible color combination that... as GK said... looks like Baylor.

Do you think the bigger 'win' here is brand reconition/creating a buzz for recruiting, or ND scoring on some jersey sales? Not to mention, does the jersey alone even 'tell the story'? Or do you need the helmet as well to actually get whatever history they're refering to.

I think y'all vastly overestimate the impact this kind of thing has on recruiting. If your name isn't Phil Knight, you're not going to have any impact on recruiting with your fashion selection.

Uni Watch breaks down Under Armour's latest college designs

Then again, the Wisconsin uniform looks like a masterpiece compared to Notre Dame's latest Shamrock Series design, which the Fighting Irish will unfortunately wear on Nov. 12 while facing Army at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

By now everyone understands the basic idea behind the Shamrock Series uniforms: The Irish normally wear one of college football's most conservative, traditional designs, so for one game each year they get to cut loose and wear some sort of wacky superhero costume. It's like the premise behind the "Purge" movie series -- an annual day of mayhem, just to take the edge off.

If you like that approach, then you'll love this year's Shamrock Series uniform. Since the opposing team is Army, the Irish are wearing olive instead of their usual shade of green. Unfortunately, this color really puts the "drab" in olive drab -- sort of a down-on-your-luck of the Irish.

As is typical for this type of uniform, there are lots of details that seem geared more for a press conference than for a football game. The helmets and sleeves, for example, feature an archway with a "God, Country, Notre Dame" inscription, which can be found at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus. Take a good look at them now, because they'll probably be reduced to a blur when you're watching the game.

This type of uniform almost resists critique because it's not really intended to be a uniform -- it's intended to create the feel of a comic book, or even a movie. If that's your thing, then by all means, reach for the popcorn. If not, well, the Irish will be wearing their regular uniforms for their other 12 games.

But, ya know, wearing that unit for 1 game of my entire football career, is really why I want to go to ND.

I think you underestimate it. It shows people that ND isn't the dying breed it was 10 years ago with the poop colored helmets. It shows that we can still be ND, and are with the times. Not your grandfather's ND, but still your grandfather's ND, if you will.

But yeah, ND is trying to score on some one-hit jersey sales because the trouble of designing/producing them is worth the small profit.

This isn't ESPN, ND doesn't have a money problem.

It's not about ND trying to score on jersey sales it's about Under Armour trying to score on jersey sales. That's their business, after all.

never met any ND fans in the UP, it's full of frickin Lutherans

Tons of ND fans up there because there's tons of Catholics in places like Iron Mountain. My 70 something y/o neighbor's related to both Mariucci and Izzo and she's a crazy ND football fan. She said Saturday was ND day (and a Yankees game if they could get it) Just another story of the support ND had from immigrant Catholics all over the country.

Am I the only one who thinks the helmet is sweet?

I like the idea overall that they put God, Country, Notre Dame on the helmet. And looking at it up close, it is kind of cool. But my first reaction was that the helmet detail is going to be a blur when they are in real time action. I could be wrong, and it may actually be able to be made out when they are playing. But I have a hard time seeing how. Either way, I just struggle to see how the entire uniform could not have been done so much better even if they went with the same basic color scheme and design. The below quote sums up my thoughts about the helmet and "God, Country, Notre Dame" icon.

the alamodome is such a dump too, these uni's are gonna look so washed out in that stadium because the lighting is so bad
