Coach Pete and UW have picked up talks with him. I believe he visited there recently too. Would be a good pick up for UW

It sounds like it's a first come, first served between Sears and Chase Garber. I've seen them both. Garber is more like Jake Browning who they have now. He's a good athlete and has NFL ceiling as a 6-3, pro-style QB but he is nowhere near the athlete Sears is.
Garber is higher on their board and he has less options than Sears so I think he'll pull the trigger and get that spot. Both of these guys will be 90+ 4 stars in the end.

Speaking about Sears athleticism... Sears had a 122.58 Sparq score yesterday. How does that compare to other QB's?

Brandon Wimbush, who rumor has it is pretty athletic for the position had a 123.03

Phil is on his way..... Phil is on his way..... Phill is on his way..... Phil is on the way

If this sticks, I could see this kid being the type of recruit that could have Duke making a run at the ACC championship a couple years in a row. Lax, put together a pretty good frame work on what qualities winning teams share. One of those was a game changing QB and if that happens to be in a conference that recently hasn't played very good defense, then look out. He'll most definitely get his chances.

they have some work to do in the other areas Lax mentioned tho. But I do agree this kid looks to have the tools/potential to make a big splash in the ACC.

What? He wasn't speaking about Duke in general, he was speaking to certain qualities of all teams. Qualities that I agree with. One is that an "elite" college QB can substantially alter how good your team is. I'm just saying that I think Sears could be that guy. If Cutcliffe can get them this competitive without this type of QB, I think they could take it to another level with a game changing QB, which I think Sears can be.

Sears with Cutcliffe will suck in 2019.

This makes me sick. Would rather have seen him at UCLA to battle SC and Stanford after Rosen departs.

Duke is quickly getting under my skin. First Ben Humphreys in '16, Scott Bracey last year and this year it's Sears, Drew Jordan and Deon Jackson.

There's even 2 OT's that seem perfect for HH to take as his class project in Leitten and Rimmer.

All I can say is... Phil, make us forget this.

right i agree with all Lax's listed qualities. I am saying Duke doesn't have all those qualities, but Sears gives them one of his mentioned qualities.

So while they will improve, I personally still dont see them winning the ACC or competing for playoff spots.

They've won 10, 9, and 8 games the last 3 years and that's without a guy like Sears at QB. A game changing QB could definitely help this team compete year after year for the ACC. Also, the point is a game changing QB makes up for the rest of your football team not having those qualities. If you have X, you don't need Y. Game changing QB's, in college football, can make up for a lot of underperformance at other positions.

put some vbucks on it? No ACC championships during Sears time at Duke?

You can think that Sears will be Duke's savior, and I will believe he still wont get them over that hump. I am in no means saying the kid sucks, just not gonna happen, imo.

but willing to put my vbucks where my fingers type....

I'm not going to bet on Duke winning an ACC championship because I never said that. My exact words were, "this is the type of recruit that I can see Duke making a run at an ACC Championship." Never called a winner, never said it was a lock, I said verbatim what is above. FWIW, in 2013 Duke "made a run at an ACC championship" by making it the game and losing to the unbeatable, at that time, FSU. Making a run is like being in the conversation. ND made a run at the CFB playoff last year. Didn't win it, didn't even make it, but they made a run at it by being in the conversation the entire year.

So, i guess your argument against me then is what exactly?

we both agree on lax's team qualities needed.

we both agree Sears is a potential championship level Qb individually

U wanted to make sure i knew he COULD make a RUN for an ACC championship on a team that has "won 10, 9, and 8 games the last 3 years and that's without a guy like Sears at QB." (ur words)

So essentially they can keep doing what they've been doing, with a better QB.

Precisely, if they can win 9 games/year with no QB or not an "elite" QB, then I don't think its out of the realm of possibility, that it can take them to another level. In fact, if I was a Duke fan, that would be my expectation.

The report I saw said that Duke "dropped" him for looking around.

I know Duke isn't dropping a blue-chip QB for anything, so I'm thinking this was a "You can't quit, because you're fired!"

EDIT: Rivals has him officially verballed to USC, so I guess Duke was trying to save some pride by "dropping" him.

Did Loy break the story? He should be Sears' agent.

"I did commit to USC earlier today," Sears said. "I was not dropped, I talked to Duke earlier today to let them know I was de-committing and was going to wait until tomorrow to release my commitment so Duke could talk to other recruits. It definitely wasn't an easy decision for me and something I've been thinking about for awhile now.
"I started to have second thoughts on my Duke commitment on my official visit for the Army game (Oct. 8). I tried to suppress the change of heart but I really started to assess things the last 10 days and then finally decided yesterday that USC is where I want to be."
Sears said he made the call to commit to Coach Clay Helton earlier this morning.
"I spoke with Coach Helton this morning around 10:30 and he welcomed me in to the Trojan family," Sears said. "It was really close between those two when I first committed and I just really like the direction USC is going right now.
"USC was first class when I didn't originally choose them and I have a lot of respect for Coach Helton. I'm really looking forward to being teammates with Sam (Darnold) and being a part of the USC program with that great tradition going forward."

I saw it on ISD yesterday. Loy just likes to be the guy who breaks it first on twitter.

Actually, ISD even tweeted it first.

In a way, I'm glad he's at SC. He's one of those kids that would've hung in my head if he had lit it up at Duke, knowing that ND woulda coulda shoulda. With him choosing SC, I can now tell myself had ND landed him after making him the top target instead of Davis/Hooker (after whiffing on Johnson) he would have just decommitted in favor of a surging Trojan program anyways.

One thing that hasn't been touched on this season as he fell off our radar, he didn't have as good of a Sr season as he did his Jr year. San Clemente did lose a lot of offensive talent from last year to be fair but I still thought he'd be closer to his Jr year #'s than he finished.

Well, the next man in at QB for San Clemente is 6-3 Jay Baggs ('19) better be nice to him unless JT Daniels is all wrapped up. (yeah right)

Honestly Loy has a mancrush on the kid. I am not sure if he helped Sears get recognition but he has brought him up in 40+ tweets this year raving about the kid. Loy does pump up kids he has a close relationship with look at Shea Patterson on Saturday. Nothing wrong with it

Loy gets on a kid at the US army combine and stays on him. I was two exits up the 5 from Sears and heard more about him through Loy than I did everywhere else combined. Loy following him so closely always gave me that glimmer of hope he was doing it because ND was still thinking about it in a plan b sorta way.

Oh well.
