I was in this boat, too, after listening to Serial. There's another podcast, Undisclosed, that swung me to the "innocent" camp. It's far more biased than Serial (the host is Rabia Chaudry, who is a family friend of the Syeds; all 3 co-hosts are lawyers), but it really dives deep into the evidence and makes some very persuasive points about the case. Take it with a grain of salt, but it's worth a listen if you have space in your queue.

If I get a minute tomorrow I will type out a longer and research response. But, expect this to be appealed. And know that it is an incredibly high burden the defense had to meet to show ineffective assistance of counsel, but that the State will have a high burden on appeal to reverse the trial court here.

I will say, now, that I'm surprised the court ruled the way it did. Without getting into all of the issues I know people have with the case, the ruling here is basically that had his attorney done her job to what was reasonably expected of her in regards to cross-examining the cellphone expert, the jury would have reached a different conclusion. That's something

When I first heard about this, my first instinct was that they're grasping at straws. Who knows though. Because after listening to the podcast and researching myself, I can honestly say that I have no idea which side I'm on. I will say that I think his friend Jay got off relatively easy though, as I feel he had a lot more to do with it.

The whole thing is bizarre.

Very late to this discussion but I just finished season 1 and am 3 episodes into the 2nd season.

I think both Adnan and Jay both buried the body as Jay had said but I don't think they killed her. I believe there was a third party that did the killing. The last episode makes me believe this because of the guy at the shop that Jay worked with says that Jay was nervous about someone watching him at work. This someone was probably someone that Adnan had known. Some gang members that were part of the Muslim community possibly? I don't know. They killed her and gave Adnan the responsibility to bury her because they had did it because of him. Adnan forces Jay to help him bury the body because he didn't want to do it alone. Adnan didn't tell Jay that he was not the one that killed her so Jay just automatically believes it was Adnan who did. Or maybe he tells him he did kill her because he doesn't want to get this third party in trouble. Adnan believes he is innocent because he didn't necessarily order the killing and he wasn't the one that killed her.

A long shot but that is what I came up with. The first half of the episodes I thought for sure it was Jay but I don't think it was. He had no reason to do it. Overall, there isn't enough evidence to convict Adnan of the crime, IMO.

Season 2 is very interesting so far. The war in the Middle East has always interested me so I think this will be better than season 1, IMO.

Sorry just saw this. Yes I did listen to the whole thing actually. Very well done, and extra creepy hearing locations I'm vaguely familiar with unlike Serial.

I'd love to hear any scoop you've heard. I might have to jog my memory of the case though, it's been a few months since I binged that pod.

Oh boy I thought season two was awful. Especially compared to season one. I just couldn't engage with a story that I already knew the basics of and a story that basically no one disputes. For me the joy of serial season one was the open ended questions it left. Everyone was invested in figuring out whodunit. With the Bergdahl thing it's just like everyone agrees he's kinda kf just an asshole that was way in over his head. End of story.

S-Town the pseudo season 3 was a slight uptick in intrigue for me but still not on season one's level. Season 2 and S-Town are both below several other crime pods IMO. In The Dark, Up and Vanished, Someone Knows Something, Accused, and others were all better.

I can agree with that. I guess what I meant to say is that it interests me more because even know I did hear about this happening, I never truly knew what all happened (I was in college and not paying much attention to the news). All I had heard is that he ran away from his post and was captured by the Taliban. It's just interesting, to me, to hear about POWs, and to not know much about something that I know very little about, interests me.

Listened to Season 1 on my way out to South Bend. Dude is totally guilty and the podcaster's PC cowardice to not look deeper into the Pakistani mafia is why we never got any answers by the end.

It's fun re-reading my takes in this thread. I also think he killed her, but I still don't like the conviction because the timeline and story the state went with in the trial makes no sense given the evidence.

The motion filed today supports a new trial for Syed based on a nearly year-long investigation that revealed undisclosed and newly-developed information regarding two alternative suspects, as well as unreliable cell phone tower data," State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby's office said in a news release.

Prosecutors say both suspects were known to authorities 23 years ago but were neither ruled out nor disclosed to Syed's defence. Neither prosecutors nor defence attorneys will reveal the suspects' identities because the investigation is ongoing, according to the motion.

One of them had threatened Lee, saying "he would make her [Ms. Lee] disappear. He would kill her," according to the filing

Prosecutors also said new information revealed that one of the suspects was convicted of attacking a woman in her vehicle, and that one of them was convicted of engaging in serial rape and sexual assault.

Sleuths on Reddit have already figured out that the two are almost certainly Mr S and Bilal. Bilal was the guy that bought Adnan his cell phone and Mr S was the one who found the body.

The thing that’s weird to me is how strong of a statement this is from the state. Why take this hard of a stance?
