When I heard of Greg's killing I was reminded of Louis Nix and how when he was at ND he rarely if ever went home to Jacksonville when class was not in session. He simply felt there was too much trouble going on there and it wasn't worth the hassle.

Going home is a different proposition for Nix, who hails from a part of Jacksonville that has seen more than its fair share of crime and heartbreak. The thousand miles between the pristine quarters of Notre Dame to Nix’s neighborhood in northern Florida can often feel like different worlds. And while the temptation of going home — Nix admits it’s crossed his mind more than once — is there, he might receive a mixed reception.

“Once I go home, they always tell me to stay in school. I’m the one that made it out,” Nix said. “Coming up where I came from, you’re either in or out, and I wanted to be out.

“I could have been anybody. I could have been the guy on the corner. I could have been dead, shot, anything. Not in school, working somewhere like at McDonald’s, no high school diploma. So I’m happy about it. I took advantage of what I had in front of me. I’m just going with it.”

There’s always more to the story with Louis Nix – Inside the Irish

It's hard to think of what if he stayed at ND. Would anything be different? Such thoughts are not the kind we should trouble ourselves with, but many will lose sleep over anyways.

Thoughts and prayers to Greg's friends and family. May they, along with Greg, find peace in this turbulent time.

Agree

Greg saw ND as a way to get away from the undesirable elements and improve his life. It's a shame he couldn't have stayed on the road less traveled. God bless Greg and his family.

UAB running back Greg Bryant declared brain dead | WPEC

Apparently one of his family members heard that he and his friend were followed from a club and they came up next to them on the interstate when it happened.

Did a quick Google search of the club and it looks like there's been a few shooting incidents in the past couple of years there.

I looked into the club too, and it looks like a lot of trouble is started there with multiple shootings. It sucks that even at 21 most kids don't fully understand that all actions (good or bad) have consequences (good or bad). From the sounds of where he was shot, I hope he felt no pain. RIP young man, another life lost to such nonsense.

Pretty shitty sentiment at this time.

Oh? Asking people not to speculate about what may have killed him before any real news is known is "a shitty sentiment"?

I'm sorry if your delicate female sensibilities got offended. Grow a pair.

Ok...... let me explain something:

When I said that I understand the sympathy and all, but we don't know what caused his death; that was not an implication that the sympathy was unwarranted. I said that I understood the sympathy, because I understand why people were jumping to conclusions. They want to make sense of something that is senseless. But the truth is......... speculation like this can sometimes become "the truth", when repeated often enough. All I was trying to do was remind people to refrain from rampant, unfounded speculation until we know some facts. If some of you think that is neg-rep worthy, then that's on you, not me. But get someone to help you straighten out your panties, for Christ's sake.

Your first post could be read in two different ways. I initially read it in the way that you did not intend. Thank you for clarifying what your intention was.

You either made a completely moronic post or you worded it really poorly and now are hijacking this thread because you are offended 3 or 4 people neg repped you. Just take your lumps and move on. A kid died and you are worried about neg reps and questioning genders. There are more important things in life man.

I worded the original post poorly, for sure. I see now how people could have read it differently. But all I have done since then is respond to people who have said things about me. If anyone is hijacking the thread, it is all of those people who constantly feel the need to let me know what a bad person they think I am.

Lets all just move on, from both sides.. No harm done!

I know he wasn't on the team, but would be cool for team to do a #1 or something on their helmet this year. If they don't, I'll have no problem with it since he left. But would show how much once you're part of the ND family, you never leave it.

It would be cool for the team to dedicate the season to Greg. Whether he played 1 snap or 4 years once ND always ND. I'm sure their will be something done at the first home game. Moment of silence for Greg and some highlights played, will the jumotron be ready by then?

I think the world of Notre Dame as an institution but I would think even more of it if they offered to pay for the funeral arrangements and loaded up ND1 with his closest friends from school so that they could attend the service. If I were Jenkins/Swarbrick it would already be done.

Greg Bryant - Always a Notre Dame Man

Greg Bryant - Always a Notre Dame Man

I don't often write comments

But today is different

My family and I had the chance to meet Greg on a couple occasions, he was always a gentleman, courteous and went out of his way for pictures and talk to my son, photo below at the 2015 Blue and Gold Game.

I offer my deepest heart felt condolences and prayers to his mother and father. being a parent myself, I do not know what I would do if I lost my son.

I do not want to talk about "what ifs", we all choose our paths in life. We all make mistakes and have success's.

Its a time to celebrate Greg and mourn his loss and know that he is in a better place.

Easy for you to say, you aren't getting PMs like this:

Of course you use your racial bias to assume Greg was involved in something. You've always been like this and you need to stop its pathetic.

Can someone please point out to me where I assumed that Greg was involved in something?

If I may interject. You had a very reasonable question as to the why. I think most people's thinking is if falls in line with the "too soon" category. Maybe hold back, share condolences, and then wait and see the reason.

Nothing wrong with asking why but any life lost regardless of circumstance is sad and requires a proper grieving period.

I didn't question the why. There were a few people who started down the path of "What he was trying to get out of eventually killed him". I understand their frustration with the lack of sense that his death makes, but it is too soon to be assuming anything about what led to his death. That's all I was saying. But a lot of people don't like my views on a lot of different subjects, so they accused me of being racist. And now I'm apparently acting like a tough guy for telling them to quit getting their panties in a bunch.

Winning is, of course, not bad thing — quite the opposite. But the desire to win can become a problem, especially when the topic is meaningless or trivial.

I got what you originally wrote. People were making the assumption that he was going back to ghetto ways, they just wouldn't say it and were trying to be cryptic by say "he was trying to get away from that lifestyle" and the like. I took your originally post to say maybe the shooting weren't gang related.

THIS is what this thread should be about.
Go start an investigation thread if you want to discuss the 'why'.

I'm not sure this is not the best place for this post. And I'm not sure where it would belong.

First, prayers to the Bryant family. They need all the support they can get.

Notre Dame makes a difference to the young men who are part of the football program. It's a different experience that 99% of other major college programs (particularly in football). I think we need to embrace the differences as fans even when the young men don't fulfill their football potential.

When we "get on" the players about focus other than football - Max learning Chinese, C Robinson being the President of the Student body, Steve Elmer forgoing his last year for a career opportunity - we lose sight of what's truly important. These kids are growing up and becoming men.

Sometimes that will involve non football interests which reduce their ability to perform on the field. Nick Sabin would not tolerate this. Notre Dame and its fans should relish it. It's part of what make the University and its education different. Does it reduce roster flexibility and effectiveness? Probably. Does it make the men who leave this program better members of our society? Absolutely.

Let's all try embrace the full Notre Dame experience. Greg Bryant relished it by all accounts. His family demanded it for him.

And again, pray for the Bryant family.

(Moderators - please place in another thread if you believe it belongs elsewhere. I mean no disrespect to Greg or his family)
