i thought it was maxed out at 5 Mill

From One Foot Down:

Using last year's rookie contracts for linebackers as our guide let's take a look at some of the financials involved, with the caveat that "guaranteed" money isn't usually ALL guaranteed in the NFL.

If Smith's stock doesn't fall much from it's pre-bowl game level he'd receive around $23.5 million if picked at No. 3 overall like Dante Fowler.

If he falls to a late 1st round pick he'd receive around $7.2 million if selected at No. 25 overall like Shaq Thompson.

The cap for his insurance policy ($5 million) means that Smith cannot gain any additional money from his policy after Tampa Bay's 11th pick of the 3rd round, 74th overall.

If Jaylon is an early 2nd round pick like Preston Smith last year he'd get about $3.2 million in guaranteed money plus an additional $1.3 million from his insurance policy. That's a total of $4.5 million overall.

A late 2nd round pick like Randy Gregory in 2015 would net Jaylon $1.5 million from his contract and an additional $3.5 million from insurance. That's a total of $5.0 million overall.

If Jaylon is picked somewhere early in the 3rd round, let's say the 5th pick of that round, he'd receive around $800,000 in guaranteed money and $4.4 million from insurance for a total of $5.2 million overall.

The 74th pick by the Buccaneers would net Smith all $5 million plus an additional $750,000 from his contract.

Once he gets past Tampa Bay at 74th overall he's collecting all $5 million and it's just a matter of picking up a decreasing amount of guaranteed money from a rookie contract.

Ballpark Guaranteed Money

Late 3rd Round- $600,000
Early 4th Round- $525,000
Late 4th Round- $450,000
Early 5th Round- $230,000
Late 5th Round- $200,000
Early 6th Round- $130,000
Late 6th Round- $115,000
Early 7th Round- $72,000
Late 7th Round- $55,000
From a financial standpoint the best outcome for Jaylon Smith is to be picked in the 1st round or hope he goes somewhere around that 11th pick in the 3rd round so he can collect as close to the $5 million of the insurance with guaranteed money adding somewhere around three-quarters of a million.

I so want the Browns to take him... SO BAD... he'd be the perfect player in their 'building for 2018' current strategy...

Been saying it since the injury...he is going round 3 AT THE LATEST. I definitely won't be surprised to hear his name end of the 1st, early second.

Are you sure it doesn't stand for "One of the 3 QB's that will start for the Browns this year" I'm hoping the Steelers take him at 89 if by any chance (I doubt it) he is still there.

I was thinking Jaylon would be setup for 8-10 years on the Raider** defense, playing alongside Khalil Mack on a team that is on the rise. Khalil Mack and Jaylon Smith? and both being young dudes with their entire careers ahead of them?? ....deadly.

** and yes, I'm bringing the Raider smack, its only been 14 years since I have had any ammo to be able to do so.

Watching ESPN, Shefter has him off the board by the end of the 3rd round.

McShay said... Wait for it.... That he thinks he will be gone by the early second or possibly the end of the first round.

Interesting

Grigson doesn't have a long enough leash to take a chance on Jaylon in the first round

Sure he does. One area of need on D is the OLB/pass rusher. You can get the Oline in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Nice to see Jaylon is in Chicago and going to the draft. Would be so awesome to see him on stage getting picked in the first round. Don't expect it...but it sure would be nice.

Why wouldn't he be? He's gonna need to find a place in the town anyways.

The tune seems to have changed the last week or so. He's gone from late draft pick to possibly a day two. Maybe doctors have changed their opinions. Mcshay was acting like he wouldn't touch him with a hundred foot pole in the early rounds a week ago now he's saying he wouldn't be surprised if he were a late day one?

The Notre Dame linebacker was looking like a top-10 pick before suffering a career-threatening knee injury in his final college game. An insurance policy will pay $700,000 to Smith if he is not a first-round pick, plus $100,000 for every additional pick that passes without a team selecting him. The policy maxes out at $5 million. New England does not pick in the first round, which means Smith would collect the full $5 million if he remains undrafted past the 74th choice, held by Tampa Bay.

Oakland picks 75th, but California's income tax will take an additional bite from Smith's rookie contract if the Raiders select him in that slot. The Titans hold the 76th choice, acquired from Los Angeles, and there is no state income tax in Tennessee. The Titans also own six picks in the first three rounds, which could make it easier for them to justify selecting a player with serious medical question marks.

Cleveland, which holds the 77th choice, is also flush with extra selections (12 in all, including eight in the third through fifth rounds). Ohio does have a state income tax.

Does anyone know if any teams have stopped in to check on him in person or have their doctors check him out?
