“The campus was beautiful,” said the class of 2017 target. “All the players are down to earth. The whole offensive line is really cool. They aren’t stuck up. They treated me like one of their own. I really appreciated it. It was a great trip.”
“Coach Kelly really stressed the educational value of the school,” said Smith.”He said it’s not just about football, but about becoming a man and a productive member of society. Coach Hiestand was talking to me about me as a player on his line and how I fit in with the guys. He said I fit what he is looking for in a player and how his criteria is about a lot more than just my ability on the field. He said I fit in with what he likes in his players and believes I could be really successful playing for him and at the university.”
“Mr. Sargent was great and his presentation was intense,” said Smith. “He said he won’t hold anyone’s hand, but he will help me along the way. He said he will check in on me and make sure I’m always on the right track. They really stressed academics and I could see why he is so passionate about his job and the success of his players in the classroom.”
“I thought the tempo was really high,” said Smith. “I loved how everyone got after it. The offensive line was focused and intense. It was fun to watch. I also liked how the players kind of coach themselves. I saw Mike McGlinchey working with Jimmy Byrne. He was telling him to fix his hands, technique and to straighten out his shoulders. It was kind of cool to see the brotherhood and the bond. They have respect for one another and it really caught my eye.”
“My dad and sister really enjoyed themselves,” said Smith. “They were really impressed with the staff and especially coach Hiestand. They felt he was really honest the whole time and didn’t sugarcoat anything. They really liked him and what he had to say.”
“It was cool seeing those guys again,” said Smith of Kraemer and Boudreaux. “I saw them about a year ago, so it was good to catch up. We were talking about Notre Dame football, reminiscing about our time at The Opening, stuff like that. We talked about how successful they will be at Notre Dame. Obviously, they were recruiting me, but it was more as a friend than just some random recruit they just met.”
“It’s definitely tempting,” said Smith. “I mean, why not? You want to compete for the job and you want to see the field, but you also want to play with the best. Notre Dame has a great offensive line and that will continue. I mean, why not play alongside players that will help you get better?”
“The next step is to maintain a relationship with coach Hiestand and then come back in the fall for an official visit for a game,” said Smith. “I’ll definitely be back. This visit helped their chances with me.”
